How Ignorant Indian Parents are when it comes to Video Games

To the people, who says its no big deal letting kids play GTA :-

Would you let your small kid play GTA4 where Niko goes to Michelle and asks for a something more

Or a game like Witcher where Geralt romances with different girls (and what happens after that)

or would u like your kid to use mo*fo* in every other sentence he speaks ( GTA uses that word atleast 1000 times)

Whatever OP did was perfectly correct and should be appreciated

Even in the most outward community of US, that we think it is, there are very strict ESRB rules for a reason

No shopkeeper can sell Mature games to kids or any AO games won't be available in any shops(like gamestop/walmart) @ all

here, if we don't care about it doesnt mean its right

lol...its better the mom allowed it .IMO.

lets be practical. what if he dont get to buy this game ???

you know the outcome.GAMES ARE ADDICTIVE .

-- steal money to play at local gaming parlour.
-- bunking school.
-- Wasting more money.

well i have seen this in many Video/cyber cafe parlour outside mumbai ,at small town and cities. Most of them play GTA:VC,PS2 or Virtual cop2.

Well regarding games rating ...lol :P who cares about it.I played Doom 1,2 when i was 14.

The Mom was definitely well educated [Impeccable NRI US Accent] so my guess why she let her son buy those games are

Just because she is well educated does not mean that she will know that games have ratings. Ask any of your well educated female friends if they know anything about game ratings.

I know you did the right thing but if I was that kid I would be :@

I bought out her level of education to highlight the fact that even after me explaining what the ratings are and what you can do in the games, she choose to ignore it.

The kid was bloody furious alright, damn even I would be at his age. But the lsmirk on his face when his face mom said its ok, priceless :)

Good effort on your part. The simple fact is that some kids understand the difference between real life and the virtual life and some don't. And this is due to many external factors too. I played Quake and Half Life too, but I knew the difference, as most of us here.

There is absolutely no problem in playing games but parents/elders should be there to help the kid understand.

There is a difference between knowing things and doing something harmful outta them.

Ive played most of the vulgar games and might have seen some movies, but that doesnt mean im gonna do that IRL

The ratings on the games are meant to be taken in an open minded manner. Its not meant to be taken literally and enfoced based on the biological age of the person. The whole funda behind the ratings is ensure that the person is mentally mature enough to understand the difference between a game and reality. Its to protect impressionable minds. The mental maturity of a person is not dependent on the biological age.

Its not like a person is not mature enough to play an 18+ rated game a day before his 18th birthday and suddenly becomes mature enough on his birthday. Often, a 10 year old can turn out to be more mentally mature than a 24 year old.

On that note, tell me, have you never watched a violent (with fighting, murder etc) Indian/International movie before you were 18+ ?

From what I can see, I would say you just have been a busybody in someone else's life. :P

I don't think that kid wanting to play such games is surprising, but attitude of parents certainly is.

We used to play games but we (Atleast me) were censured every now and then by our parents for that reason.

forget games, people are not even bothered about ratings for movies. i seen many times where parents bring along their 10 year olds for adult A rated movies.

i also agree that when if we were in our early teens, we would also have hated this. but the question isnt whether you like it or not. the ratings are there for a reason. i know almost all of us (ok everyone :P) have seen/played adult movies/games when we were not the proper age. most of us know its just a game and isnt what is supposed to be done in real life. but there are some who start to follow the things shown which leads to all sorts of teenage violence we hear these days.

what the OP wants to point out here isnt if it is ok to play games meant for adults, but rather the attitude of his mom. instead of saying 'its ok for him to play these games', it would have been better if she said 'i keep an eye on him and make sure he understands its just a game and know the difference'.

@neoronin - it was nice on your part to ask his mom.

Heh, this reminds me of being taken to watch horror movies by my elder cousins, must have been 8 or 9, they didn't have ratings in those days. I think i had nightmares for a good few months afterwards. Put me off horror movies for life.

Interesting to know times have not changed since.

I think that mother wanted to let her son have that game so he would let her have time to do what she wanted :)

As a teenager i guess he would prolly end up ok.

One more thing that nobody pointed out.

She is a responsible person as she was buying genuine games not pirated ones.

In a way she was supporting the industry. So chillax guys and I agree she

could have replied in a better way that she will keep an eye on her kid. Full

marks to the OP for doing what was morally correct.

Most parents imho wont let the kids buy any games. Which middle class parent would OK a 1000 rs for a game especially for a 13-14 year old? lol, Its different if the kid saves up and buys on his own or downloads it from the interwibble.

My cousin kept calling me all the time while he was in India and now he called this afternoon from Australia. Guess what he wants?

Gears of War. I said no way. First get approval from your dad(he didn't allow GTA4 btw). Now he wants me to convince his dad, moreover wants me to buy and ship the game. He's 13 :)

Most of the middle class parents won't be able to afford the xbox 360 for the kids. So my guess, if they can afford to buy their kid a console, they can also buy the games. But console games have become damn expensive these days.:@

'buying n selling tobacco products is illegal' warning/law is ridiculed n game ratings gonna be taken seriously?

seller is as ignorant as the buyer...or maybe both are equally intelligent to decide n approve whats good for them n society...

matter of personal business in my opinion...

@OP

u surely did a good thing...but again...ppl dont like to take free advice...

The simple thing is that.. people really dont give a crap anymore.. and thus the result, Parents might act ignorant for a hell load of reasons or maybe they just dont get it.

The shopkeeper on the other hand will not do anything cause its a sale for him/her... and thus his job gets done..

One way or the other.. kids are exposed to the reality of a lot of situations and overprotecting them only causes more curiosity and in some cases gets out of hand...

The solution however cannot be condensed to a single line.. you just have to do what it takes to keep things away from the kid if you are concerned about his/her well being ...otherwise... let it be.

I am really sad to see views of all you guys over here :(

What is the problem if a kid around 13-14 is playing violent game? It is not that the parents have to make their kids stay away from game but they should just make there kids know what is the difference between real and virtual thing. What is good and what is band and let them decide by themselves.

I think everyone here has played violent game and yes you might have played them even when you were kids. Quake, Wolf etc all can be classified as violent games.

And if someone thinks playing violent games would spoil their kids or will turn them into a monster/killer then I have a question "How many here have killed someone in real life after playing CS or Quake Or UT or L4D etc?"

I am really sad :(

Agree 100% with you.

Down with the moral policing. Playing violent games doesn't necessarily turn kids into psychopaths and serial killers....unless you are jack thompson :bleh:
