How long should a smartphone battery last?

I would want a phone with minimum of 5 Hrs of talktime with other features used occasionally. I never measure standby time so cannot comment on that.

I would gladly accept a more bulkier phone than a phone whose battery life doesnt even last a day.

I love my HTC Diamond but the freaking battery just doesnt go thru the whole day :(

if given a choice, i would never recharge. so selected 4~7 days.

On my current usage in a day,
Am on 3.5G network
always on messaging communities
10 mins wifi
10 mins GPS
browsing for about 15-20 mins

After all these, i get a battery life of 1 day

I definitely do not want a phone which is heavier to accommodate a huge battery. Ideally I would expect it to last a day so that I can put it on charge while going to sleep. But for the days when you cannot access the charger for those few extra hours it should be slightly more than a day.

As for features, no, can't sacrifice a few features to prolong the battery life. BUT that is what we all do on our andriod anyway, dont we? We bring down the brightness, we don't allow applications to sync automatically or too frequently, we definitely switch off every other damn thing like BT/GPS/WIFI.

This is the reason I don't see myself getting a smart phone anytime soon. :( Have been using Sony Ericsson phones for ages now. Usually charge every 4-5 days.

(Also the reason I have a separate mp3 player.)

My n95 8gb lasts just about a day which is pretty acceptable to me but the down side of it is that if once I for get it to charge it at night, its dead even before I wake up.

So in my opinion a phone that would last about 36 hours is pretty much good enough.

1 Day is enough. But it should last from morning till bedtime ( i usually keep it to charging overnight ).

I wont compromise on features, display and raw processing power for better battery life.

How hard is it to charge the battery once a day :P

2 days? I do that with my iPhone 3G I have ATM. And I'm pleasantly satisfied with it. Charge the phone whilst I crash to bed. :P

Of course, the brightness level has been set to about 20% of the bar, WiFi barely switched on, listening to music for about an hour daily during commutes to my office. And about a talk time daily for about an hour if not any lower. :)

Definitely not hard to charge once a day, but what if some day you get home late and are a little incapacitated to understand what a charger is for, and don't charge it, bam it dies the next morning, you bunk class, get proxy (totally different if you miss work) :D and this is very much a hypothetical situation I'm talking about :D

Ideally I would want my smartphone's battery to last 2 days , but yea a single day is acceptable .

My HTC Diamond used to last 8 hours with EDGE and 15 min sync enabled , That's why got rid of it .. iPhone's generally seem to have a good battery life .

I get good backup on my 5800 XM, but that might have a lot to do with my extremely minimal usage. I listen to like an hour of songs on the earphones, talk for about 30 minutes, text message, browse on EDGE, as well as using my comp's connection for about an hour or so, and take around 10 snaps with flash, all in a single charge. However, since this is my weekend phone, it lasts me 7 - 8 days on a single charge, including almost 4 - 5 days of standby, and 2.5 days of active usage

I once watched an entire movie of 1 hr 55 mins on the phone without any draining :P

2days is good enough for me although 1500mAh on spica is lasting me 3 to max 4days with moderate usage..i do text alot though.

the brightness level is at lowest at all time, except when im under direct sunlight.

I charge my Nokia 5800 about once every 5~7 days on avg with my typical usage. It was about the same with my previous smart phone. However I am fine with 3 day battery life. I don't like to sacrifice features for battery life. In my opinion the ideal way to increase the battery life is to either use a higher capacity battery at the cost of slightly increased weight (The phone should still weigh under 160gms) or tune the hardware and software so that the battery is used more optimally.

Once every 2 days should be pretty good.

But i don't think today's smartphones would last that long with the mammoth screens and tons of features. :(

This is why I love 1000mAh chargers. So even if this happens, I can charge my phone to say about 90-95% within 30-40 mins.
These phones do charge fast. Take an example of HTC Desire, it charges from 20% to full charge within an hour.

On a side note, won't a USB3 port should charge an iphone faster than the adapter? I think thexfactor can share his views on this since he owns a motherboard which has a couple of USB 3.0 ports. :)

I have a GIGABYTE board which supports USB 3.0 and its mentioned that it gives 10x power.. It does charge faster than normal 2.0 ports but somehow i feel my wall charger is better.

The problem with lasting one day is how long can you expect the battery's eventual lifetime to be ?

It's going to drop after a few months and you will be below one day. Also charging every day leads to twice as many charge-discharge cycles compared to doing it every other day. Battery's only good for so many cycles, and in this case it leads to halving or doubling within the same time frame. You have anywhere from 300-800 cycles depending on the quality of the battery, storage temp & speed of charging.

So charging every day means dead in 10 months instead of upto 20 months (are these figures realistic ?)

So I think two days would give a larger cushion unless you do not mind replacing the battery more often.

You get that in exchange for shorter overall battery life. Faster the charge cycle the shorter the eventual lifetime of the battery as the battery gets heated to higher temperatures to charge faster.

So tho the OP asks for operating lifetime, could this be extended to overall battery life time ?

How long does your typical battery last before it needs to be replaced as its incapable of holding a useful charge long enough. I think if its affordable to do so then the question is moot, shorter charge cycles are defnitley a plus but otherwise not.
