Chunky Pandey has a restaurant-ish that he changes every 8-12 months next to our commercial area. Everyone including his mom calls him chinky. Does this count?

You know 'mallu' means monkey in Hindi, right? :D
Are you sure you know Hindi? Are you from North? I have never known in my 30 years of existence that mallu means monkey in hindi. Maybe in sanskrit, :P

I am from Kerala(m) only. I actually got this as a forward. Google search also threw some results. So thought most probably it's true. :D It could be a Urdu word or may be a very old and now non-existing word.

See here and here.

मल्लू [mallu] {m} (also: बन्दर, वानर, कपि)

ape {noun}

call me a paki, islami, jihadi, terrorist, afghani, talibani, maru, marwari or even a alien & see if I care

It's just a word lol
For you it might be, but thats far from it for others. On the streets those words are literally an invitation to a fight, every time.

Point being there is never ever a good connotation when those words are used. Given you do not live in as varied a society as elsewhere you would be blissfully ignorant, if you did then it would be dangerously ignorant.

It's just needed to describe hot oriental chicks while chatting with friends

for example "I saw a hot Chinki Chick today"
Why couldn't you say you saw a hot chick instead, thats the point isn't it. Her ethnicity is incidental. That you would need to specify it implies you nor your audience have seen many hot chicks that weren't your own kind. It sounds very crass. Abroad only the old ppl feel a need to talk like that. The ones that did not grow up with ppl of all sorts of colour around them.

P.S. Just avoid calling me a Kid unless you are 30+ (ie Uncle)
lol, where'd i use the word 'kid' ?

Even I am curious to know what do the south Indians call people from delhi?

Here in delhi, we are a step ahead. We have names even for people living in our city. It breaks down to Punjabi, jaat, gujjar, baniya, pandit, sardar, mulla etc. So does that mean we are racist? The answer is no, Racism is a very loose term in India. If a citizen of another country were to look at it, it sure would seem to him like we are racists when infact quite the opposite is true in our case. Most of the people who use these terms, do so in good humor and not to offend anyone. As someone said, for us, its just a means of stereotyping and nothing else.

This might surprise you but i think that its a good thing as it indicates a higher degree of tolerance. This is purely an indian interpretation mind you, and one that goes back thousands of years. The implication is even if its meant with malice that it still does not matter. It does not elicit the same kind of emotional response as elsewhere.

Yeah, because over there multi-culturalism means everybody being nice and falling in love with each other or at least creating the impression that everything is hunky-dory. This way you can push any rascism that might exist under the carpet and pretend it does not exist.

So which approach to multi-culturalism is better ? ours or theirs. History would give us an edge over them i feel.

Very strange but is it just me who thinks that usage of words like chinki, mallu, gulti (Andhra) etc have arisen because of people being stupid enough to judge others by the way they look or who parrot Liberalism to everyone but are hypocrite enough to give their own friends nicknames on what they look like... Even among friends how can someone jest on the way a someone looks like? I have been at the receiving end because I am a Gurkha, even a DM had the audacity to ask me once if I was actually from Gurgaon, though I am born & brought up here and had all the relevant documents...

People don't learn everything on their own they emulate what they see around them. You will call a Gurkha/Manipuri/Assamese chinki or a someone from Tamil Nadu/Kerala mallu or tambi because you just emulate what you think is cool or it is ok... Chalta hai attitude....

Now to those people who are giving lecture about morals and Indian culture, heck do you even know what is India... Heard about "Unity in Diversity"... Culture, Traditional values well you have a culture and they have their own culture... Just because someone else's allows them to dress liberally doesn't mean they don't have values or morals...

"Sumtimes, a lot depends on oneself..... If the girls from NE INDIA wear Sarees, do u think they would be labeled as easy & lose characters??"

Buddy, when did Saree becaome the defacto standard of decency??? And AFAIK with the kind of backless/ deep neck/ noodle straps that "normal indian" woman wear with sarees... What do you call that "Indian Fashion"???

I never use it. Addressing someone as per their physical attributes is quiet cheap.

I had a lot of people from the North East states / Korea / China / Japan at my school. Was shocked when I came to New Delhi and heard this term.

well almost all chinki's are hot & have better b**bs than normal hotties thus saying I saw a hot Chinki Chick today = a better reaction

I was just saying I only hate being called a kid

With that sort of a comment and exuberance, i am surprised you dont have other monikers already.

Try to control your outburst.

Ditto... they are hot and calling their dress up provocative is immaturity.. They wear what they wear because they can carry it off... But being descriptive is taking it a bit far... I know for you it might just be cool, but their might be underage members here !!! :P:P

we have certain basic morals that have been with us for centuries.....

:)

which means you dont know the history of India. Google kama sutra and khajurao.
I had some nepali friends never called them chinki, never had any NE friends :(

Someone from NE above said that ppl dont even know where assam and other NE states are, I dont blame those people. The only time NE states are in the news is because of some violence or something related to china.

Maybe someone from NE can post some cool things about their states here.

chill dude I don't use it to insult anyone

it's just a word

chinki's got the stuff I want then what can I do?

I'm a straight man & it's not my fault so I don't have to shy away from talking about chix

Why are you trying to act as if you are the personification of coolness... ;);)

It is ok to talk about chix but being descriptive is not really advisable when talking in a forum where there are people you are familiar with others that you are not... It might be cool for you, for someone else it might be derogatory...

"chinki's got the stuff I want then what can I do?"

This buddy is a really crass statement...

@udit: think of something based on physical appearence that people could describe you with and then think of someone referring to you all the time with it... not very nice is it? Empathy is what is really important imo.

Isn't that the point at which it should begin to matter?
