Can anyone help me out here. I have a touchpad a few other things which i will be getting back to India, whenever i come. Now i know that the customs can be a really PITA and i guess the limit of 25,000 Rs per person is the custom assessed value of the total stuff one brings. Although i have a 32 GB touchpad which cost me 7.5 K INR but the custom assessed value may be high (i may be wrong).

So if anyone can provide me with an Indian bill (of least value) so i can keep it as a backup to show the customs when i return, sort of like proving that the touchpad is bought in India.

Not sure if custom people will buy my statement.

Does this sound right ?? Correct me if i am wrong.

1) touchpads were never officially sold in india. So, showing Indian bill will not be credible. S

2) remove the packing. Carry it as if you are using it. Customs don't usually bother with on personnel belongings that passenger is using. They are more after brand new stuff

3) carry your original invoice in usd.if they insist on charging duty.

Though, i don't think you will have to pay duty on such small item alone.

^^Yes i have no intention of bring the box or anything. Will be getting it as something i am using.

But apart from the touchpad i have the following things...(we are 2 people who will be coming back)

Two Laptops, one is company provided, one my personal

Two 12" digital photo frames, their box is so big that if it appears like a laptop box

Two 7" digital photo frames, they are small but in Box.

Don't really have any other big electronics that can raise eyebrows.

Hence i am trying to figure out what to do. I am trying to find if i find someone who is going to Mumbai and can carry one of the 12" frames.

I don't see an issue with the Touchpad if you're bringing it in as personal item w/o the box and everything. With the laptops, one laptop is allowed to be carried in w/o any issues however I am guessing bringing in 2 laptops could be an issue. As far as the digital photo frames are concerned, I would try and avoid bringing in the boxes as they attract attention and one can argue that they might be headed for the market as they have their retail packing intact more so because you are carrying multiple pieces. In any case, carry your original USD invoices with you although the customs have their own price assessments which they follow regardless. But on the other hand, you might just breeze through the green channel w/o a hitch. There's no way of predicting what customs will be like on the day you land :)

@sukhdeep, can you let me know how did you bring them in ? Courier or hand ? can you give me break up? cos i have 2 nos lying in US, waiting for some one to bring them.

^^I thought Anna would have a problem only if we paid a bribe to the Customs guys :p

Actually we are two people travelling and the stuff between us (obvious looking) will be two laptops which were taken from India only and not bought in US at all. Moreover one is a company laptop and another personal. So they should not be counted i guess.

Apart from these, the obvious electronics are...two 12" digital photo frames which cost me around 110$ and two 7" photo frames which cost me 40$. One HP Touchpad which will be bought as if using, in my carry on bag which cost me like 160$. Now the total price of all these things is like 310$ (10-20$ here or there). So between two of us we are carrying stuff less than 20,000 INR (not counting the laptops).

About bringing the frames without their box pack, I have considered that option also but that thing has a glass frame on it (detachable from main photo frame) and i fear that the glass may break while the luggage is in transit. These airport guys handle the luggage terribly.

Now with all this, i was planning to get a small laptop (something between netbook and notebook, like 12-13" ones) but one more laptop will cause issues i guess.
