hi
I have recently purchased a i7 2600k. I have appplied the TIM that came with my HSF. The HSF I am using is the Spire Thermax Eclipse II 5 DT heat pipes cooler with two 2200 rpm, 90 CFM Cooler Master fans in push-pull configuration.

My problem is the processor shows really high temps at stock clocks. At the stock 3.4GHz and 1.184 volts I am getting >74 C at load. Sometimes even 80C. Mind you this is with the tower HSF I am using. In my previous build (PII X3 720) my temps never exceeded 47-50 C @ 3.4 GHz with the same cooler.

Am I missing something? I have given back the processor to the retailer but he is giving me a lot of problems. He has himself checked the processor to be running at 73-74 C after installing in his system. To me this is a very high temp and I am insisting him to replace the processor but he is not listening.

I am now without a rig :( . Is there any way to confirm that my processor is faulty and directly ask intel for a replacement?

PS: the processor was purchased on 7 Apr and has been lying with the retailer since 9 Apr.

Any help/ advice will be much appreciated

Specify which motherboard you are using. This is incase you are using an ASUS motherboard. Even my p8p67 pro shows really weird temps in the startup BIOS. Its a problem reported by many users. See the temperatures shown on AI SUITE II or Real temp. i get idle temps of 32-38 degrees and load temps of 54-60 degrees. I have a i5 2500k @ 4.2Ghz with a hyper 212 plus cooler.

yash the temps i am referring to are given by real temp & core temp. I know the bios will report temps that are 10-12 C higher at idle as the power saving features are not active then. BTW I am using a MSI p67A-GD 55 board (B3 revision). See thats the issue you are getting 60 C at load @ 4.2 Ghz with a 212 +. The cooler I am using is more powerful than the 212+ and also I have not OCed but still I am getting >74C load temps under real temp/ core temp

^^

Try putting it in RMA bruv,

for trouble-shoot use stock Intel Heat-Sink fan, if the chip gets burnt, then you arer even elligible for the warranty + I really dislike MSI boards now , my AMD HD 5770 got fried after running at 105 degrees for four months.

Is this your motherboard MSI Global ? Mainboard - P67A-GD55 -- hope I helped.

yup thats the board i have got. Personally i have used asus, msi & gigaybyte boards and TBH gigabyte boards are the best IMO. but only the msi board was in stock thats why i bought it. I have tried with the stock intel fan & temps have hit 81 C under load :O . I am not sure how to go about RMAing the proccy especially since my retailer is not being helpful.

Maybe you havn't applied the TIM correctly.... I've got an i7 930 at 4.2ghz with HT on, and a corsair H70... And my proccy idles at 32 C and on full load (Prime 95 for an hour or so) it reaches around mid 70s.

He can't do more help as it's up to you to send it for RMA, most of known dealers in my city at most took faulty product from you & send for RMA. In your case your dealer even don't want to take that much hassle, better you send to intel after contacting them online & describing your issue & do send EXACTLY as they said.

HTH

I see a lot of people reporting higher temps!! The second gen i's are supposed to be running cooler and faster right? But temps are reported high even @ stock speeds and with stock fans. These will be the initial batches I guess. Did India get a bad batch?

Maybe this will help. Intel Offices in India

That could be a sad driver update issue,I have a friend who's having the same problem, A simple Formatting the HDD and a catalyst update would have done the trick.

@OP : I suggest you remount your HSF , things might improve then. Also, do another clean OS install on a newly formatted HDD, might do the trick and yeah reset CMOS.

^ Didn't he mention that the processor shows high temps even at his dealers place?

@OP I Don't think the you should go for an RMA instead force the dealer you brought it from to give you a new one.. Most dealers have 48 hours return policy. I don't think its fair to you to have it RMA'd when you purchased a New one!

good news guys and thanks for pouring in with the timely suggestions. I managed to get my dealer to give my a brand new boxed proccy last night :D . Although he made me wait for 4.5 hrs at his store :@. Came home finished assembling everything by midnight, switched on the PC and noticed higher idle temps in the early 40s but 5-6 degrees lower load temps under prime 95 blend test using 7 GB RAM. Oced to 4.0 Ghz and saw load temps shoot upto 84 C. It couldnt be that I have got two hot chips (although this one is a few degrees cooler than the previous one), also remounted heat-sink, so now thinking that my TIM has crapped out. Ordered new TIM today (Tunic TX-3), but will put the stock intel TIM and see if it helps a bit. I am pretty much sure changing TIM will solve my problem as every other component is working just fine.

Will post later with the results

may be your motherboard is giving it high volts.

i would suggest youundervolt your processor.

honestly guys,i feel its b3 version of motherboards which are having issues of heating .

AFAIK intel doesn't provide TP syringe along with it's CPUs... Intel stock heatsink just comes with preapplied TP... So I think you meant that you would use the stock hsf for the time being...

no i meant what i said. I pursued my dealer to give a sealed syringe with the intel TIM that any GID gets from intel :P .

@pratik my mobo is not giving the proccy high voltage as i was able to hit 4.2 Ghz with just 1.27 v, which is pretty good.

@ asingh. dude i usually put a very small drop of TIM at the center of the HS of the proccy and use the pressure generated by the HSF to spread it out. But i have also tried the other way round by putting the TIM at the center of the HSF. Also before application I clean the HSF base and CPU HS with rubbing alcohol. Both the times there was no difference. I have repeated this 3-4 times every time the temps were more or less the same. I am pretty sure I am installing the HSF properly so it must the TIM. BTW i am using the TIM supplied with the HSF (a small syringe of a TIM called bluefrost), which AFAIK is not very good at thermal conductivity
