In one para : what's wrong with our modern diet.

There are enough research links supportive and you bring some random guy's blog with nefarious tone. "These things are a pain in the ass, of course." - a sentance from your so much trusted article, such a class research.
Don't think turmeric as a spice or supplement need this much discussion neither anybody's support these days.
As said, whatever floats your boat. Bye.
I have already specified how google can get 'class research' on why curcumin studies are not reliable. It is easily available. I just avoided a cluttered post which will not make anyone wiser.

And i have never in any post discussed turmeric as a spice or a supplement. Nor is this the first post where i have to remind that the discussion was on the claim of it having mercury poison reversal property.

Regarding turmeric,
(1) Turmeric can be used safely as a spices unless it is adulterated with lead chromate. Lead Chromate gives turmeric its bright yellow color and is a widely used contaminant. Adulterated turmeric can cause Lead poisoning
(2) Yes, turmeric is a strong anti oxidant, strong blood thinner, strong this and strong that but there is no authentic clinical data to prove that any of these properties can be put to some medicinal use. In fact, the blood thinning abilities of Turmeric has caused serious internal bleeding issues in some people.
(3) Turmeric is also toxic to liver and the only reason it is not killing people is because of its poor oral absorption rate and low quantity used in kitchen. But turmeric supplements contain black pepper, which increases the absorption rate of turmeric thus causing liver damage.

In short, Turmeric has a poor oral absorption rate so can be safely consumed in curries and there is no need to stop using it, just make sure it is not adulterated. Adulterated turmeric can be very risky because it can cause lead positioning so avoid turmeric milk to drastically minimize risks.
Turmeric has no medicinal property and it can cause serious liver damage if ingested in capsules form containing black pepper or with any other substance which can increase its absorption.

Regarding liver doc, Cyriac Abby Philips aka Theliverdoc is an Indian Hepatologist and he treats Indian patients with critical liver damage. He is the one among very few people who discovered that ayurvedic and homeopathic medicines are killing people and causing severe liver damage which is equivalent to an alcoholic liver. This is not some blind western fantasy of Indian hate but data from real patients gathered over a long period of time. His team arrived on the conclusion after doing biopsy of liver and when the liver injury pattern was entirely different from Alcohol, paracetamol and other well known liver injury patterns. Only difference is, alcohol induced liver damage occurs mostly in men while Ayurveda, homeopathy and other herbs are causing liver damage in children and women.

Most of the links given in this thread are done on cell cultures, animals or assumptions such as turmeric has anti-inflammatory property so it should help cancer patients. Where is the actual clinical data to prove it ? I have found a few papers in the references of the citations but those are not randomised controlled trial.

Check this double blinded, randomized-controlled trial on 200 individuals. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00296-023-05417-z
The study found that using turmeric is as good as a placebo.

Also, check the following data on actual patients.

Regarding paracetimol poisning. It is extremely difficult to get poisoned by paracetamol unless one is exceeding the dose. Paracetamol damage on liver is well documented and there is an antitode to that. Herbs on the other hand seems to be 10 times more dangerous than alcohol and a ticket to liver transplant.

Most turmeric supplements are safe (safe not useful) because of its poor absorption rate. But if turmeric is mixed with black pepper than you are doomed. Just because turmeric is safe that doesn't mean it has any benefit. There is no benefit of eating turmeric in capsule form or supplementing it. Just because it has anti inflammation property that doesn't mean it can decrease inflammation in cancer patients as many low quality studies are pointing out. Kitchen is not a pharmacy and spices should be used as spices not as medicines or supplements.

It is upto us if we want to believe actual scientific evidence and data from real patients who has suffered liver injuries or random poor studies available on google. The answer is obvious. I will trust experts who are treating critical liver patients. I don't want to be their patient.

And tons of bad effects ! And you know turmeric is always contaminated !!!

Still, not at all absorbable, so no proof about anything good, only proof is about bad effects eventhough unabsorbable !!! Nothing good !!! lol.

Indian cough syrups which killed hundreds of children were also very well proven medicines, unfortunately just they were "unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol as contaminants" which could be fatal... see ?

Yet to see hundreds of women and children dying because of turmeric (not laced with cobalt, nickel, lead, cadmium, mercury and entire toxic things from periodic table).

Unfortunate to see that OP's post about "what's wrong with our modern diet" now reached a level supporting "processed foods without impurities", artificial sweetner use which have suspicious credentials, researched uncountable times and found safe, etc. etc. :)

Well written! I don't quite understand a few parts, though -

1. What do you mean by turmeric milk? I'm concerned because, I occasionally consume this beverage - warm milk with turmeric & black pepper powder. For all I know, most people do and have done for ages. If this is what you mean by turmeric milk, why should I avoid this?
2. I'm well aware that Homeopathy is pseudoscience; but how are those "medicines", which are basically just sugar, causing deaths? You mean, by not treating the prevailing condition?
Have to say that this -
Kitchen is not a pharmacy and spices should be used as spices not as medicines or supplements.
sounds out of place here. As most if not all of the perpetrators in your list of linked studies seems to have come from supplements/ adulterated products, so not from the kitchen.

It is upto us if we want to believe actual scientific evidence and data from real patients who has suffered liver injuries or random poor studies available on google. The answer is obvious. I will trust experts who are treating critical liver patients. I don't want to be their patient.
I'd suggest to consult an actual professional - Doctors or Nutritionists. You took all these 'scientific evidence' from the google as well; you seem to be using your judgement to decide what is poor and what is not. As I've mentioned already,
It seems to me that there is a study/research for anything you could think of.
I'm certain that you'd find studies/researches opposing all this, if you'd again, google. This is a complicated subject and that's the reason why there are so many people working on it. So, the best course of action for the common person is to rely on professionals, from whom you can get anything from rule of thumb advice to a tailored diet plan.

2. I'm well aware that Homeopathy is pseudoscience; but how are those "medicines", which are basically just sugar, causing deaths? You mean, by not treating the prevailing condition?
Many homeopathic "medicines" are often alcohol-based or contaminated with heavy metals. This issue extends beyond small companies; even larger ones are guilty of selling such products. Numerous homeopathic "medicines" with lab reports can be found on the Twitter handle @theliverdoc. For instance, see here:

@BullettuPaandi

> 1. What do you mean by turmeric milk? I'm concerned because, I occasionally consume this beverage - warm milk with turmeric & black pepper powder. For all I know, most people do and have done for ages. If this is what you mean by turmeric milk, why should I avoid this?

Turmeric milk can thin your blood. Those with internal bleeding, blood pressure, etc. should be careful taking this.

(Anecdote: Personally know one person who had to undergo Nasal cautery. He had history of blood pressure and nasal bleeding. Consumed turmeric milk for few days, had serious case of nasal bleeding).
Heard Drs. also advice patients to avoid turmeric and turmeric milk before surgeries to avoid bleeding.
So, when they say human body does not absorb turmeric, it have no affect, etc., think twice.

@TEUser2K1 bro, First of all, I would have been sailing with you in the same boat had I wasn't aware of a lot of things which I mentioned. I am just trying to make everyone understand the dangers of using herbs and specis as medicines/supplements. This is a serious health burden in our country which is totally avoidable. :)
@jiith77 that post was not addressed to you.

> (2) Yes, turmeric is a strong anti oxidant, strong blood thinner, strong this and strong that but there is no authentic clinical data to prove that any of these

The absorption of turmeric can be enhanced by adding black pepper. Turmeric supplements enhanced with black pepper are causing liver injury not turmeric used as spices because the quantity used in kitchen is very small.
But:

> In fact, the blood thinning abilities of Turmeric has caused serious internal bleeding issues in some people.
And tons of bad effects ! And you know turmeric is always contaminated !!!
Blood thinning has nothing to do with contamination of turmeric. Blood thinning is a turmeric property, and it can cause internal bleeding in some patients. Turmeric is toxic to liver without any contaminant. Lead poisoning and liver injury because of turmeric are both different issues.
Still, not at all absorbable, so no proof about anything good, only proof is about bad effects eventhough unabsorbable !!! Nothing good !!! lol.
Bro, there is no lol in it. Just because people travel lakhs of km on a motorcycle without a helmet and not dying doesn't mean it is safe. I have given links to the cases of patients whose liver was damaged because of turmeric. Turmeric supplements are causing liver injury not turmeric as a spices because supplements are enhanced with peperine to increased turmeric absorption.
Yet to see hundreds of women and children dying because of turmeric (not laced with cobalt, nickel, lead, cadmium, mercury and entire toxic things from periodic table).
:D. Bhai, turmeric is contaminated with lead chromate which gives turmeric its bright yellow color. There is no point in adding cadmium, mercury and other periodic table stuff.

I posted my response because pseudoscience is a serious issue in India.
I am not saying you or anyone else is promoting pseudoscience. I am just Letting everyone know a few things about dangers of using herbs and spices as supplements and medicines.

In short,

-Turmeric is toxic to liver in its pure unadulterated form and it can cause liver injury.
-To injure the liver, one has to consume turmeric beyond a safe limit and add something such as black pepper to increase its absorption.
-Lead poisoning due to turmeric is a separate issue and it happens because lead chromate is added to turmeric to give turmeric a bright yellow color.
Turmeric has no health benefit other than its ability to give yellow color in the food.

Yes, this is exactly what I mean by turmeric milk. People are also drinking alcohol that doesn't mean it is safe. Everyone has a different tolerance. You don't want to test the tolerance of your liver. We all know people who are are above 70 and still weekly consume alcohol without any issue but that doesn't mean we can turn a blind eye towards alcohol induced liver damage.
2. I'm well aware that Homeopathy is pseudoscience; but how are those "medicines", which are basically just sugar, causing deaths? You mean, by not treating the prevailing condition?
Have to say that this -
There are many homeopathic medicines with high level of alcohol so these so called medicines are directly responsible for liver injuries but Ayurveda is a bigger culprit. Homeopathy if followed in its true form is totally harmless and a low quality pseudoscience. Even comics and novels are written better than the principles of homeopathy.
sounds out of place here. As most if not all of the perpetrators in your list of linked studies seems to have come from supplements/ adulterated products, so not from the kitchen.
Bro, I specifically mentioned that turmeric cannot cause liver injury when used as a spices. Turmeric supplements are causing all the harm.
I'd suggest to consult an actual professional - Doctors or Nutritionists. You took all these 'scientific evidence' from the google as well; you seem to be using your judgement to decide what is poor and what is not. As I've mentioned already,

I am not using my own judgement. There is something called quality of evidence. When studies are done considering these parameters then they are considered to be authentic.
The studies I posted were picked by an expert hepatologist theliverdoc and these were of two kinds.
(1) Double blinded Randomized-controlled trial.
(2) Data taken from patients who have liver injury. Their biopsies are a exponentially greater evidence than any other study based on animals or cell culture in lab.

Yes, this is exactly what I mean by turmeric milk.
Well, it's a common beverage where I'm from in the name of milagu paal. In fact, doctors have prescribed me this for common cold & cough.

Turmeric has no health benefit other than its ability to give yellow color in the food.
The three points above this makes sense; but this doesn't seem to, considering what I've just mentioned.

Which is why I'm confused how you jumped to saying "Kitchen is not a pharmacy".

I understand that. These things can have religious and cultural significance to many. A liver doctor is the one whose advise is to be taken seriously when we are trying to understand liver injuries, not a general medicine doctor.

The points make sense based on evidence. There is no high quality evidence of any health benefit of turmeric but there is evidence of patients suffering from liver injuries because of turmeric supplements.
Which is why I'm confused how you jumped to saying "Kitchen is not a pharmacy".
Because turmeric is supposed to be used in kitchen and not in supplements or in blood thinning medicines. That is why I said that kitchen is not a pharmacy.
What if we always feel hungry? There should be something that kills hunger.
Hunger kills hunger. Once you are hungry beyond a certain time your hunger will be suppressed. This is why intermittent fasting is extremely effective. Other method is to eat protein and fats and very less sugar/carbs. Carbohydrates create an endless hunger cycle.

It sounds like you're making a presumption; I didn't question what it is, but highly doubt that doctors bother about about religious/cultural significance. I've only read some of all the links you've shared, but most seem to be victims of chemically altered or adulterated supplements. In India, these products are more likely to be prescribed, or rather sold, by someone working for a corporation that uses such products as a part of pyramid scheme.

You still seem to be talking about two different things and jumping to a third different conclusion with all this.
For some of us, it's all the same. We are craving with hunger, hungry for cravings.
Well it's a bit extreme, but there's something called 'gastric bypass' should you be interested :tearsofjoy:

Well it's a bit extreme, but there's something called 'gastric bypass' should you be interested :tearsofjoy:
That's too much. Even if I want, I recently lost almost 15kg of weight and no doctor would allow for such procedure by looking at me.

Only one thing that partially worked for me for cravings is, eating items with lesser calories, like cucumbers, butter milk, honey etc. Still haven't figured out what to do kill cravings/hunger.
By the way, not brushing the teeth works great. I don't feel to eat anything if I delay brushing teeth for few hours.

If you had clinical levels of T2D, it will not go back to normal. Will need constant monitoring, afaik.
Follow your Dr.'s advise, since there is still propensity for the condition to come back.
Craving is kind of addictive mind thing, may need that of treatment or therapy?

Hb1ac and blood glucose levels have vastly changed from few months. I had some other condition and doc was also surprised how this much is possible. Tested several times and the change is apparent.
Even before this change, I was never suggested to take any medication though.
Still lifestyle has changed drastically, including diet, exercise (a little), sugar cravings, being conscious about how many calories I'm eating etc.

Craving is kind of addictive mind thing, may need that of treatment or therapy?
We all probably need so many therapies at this point. Recently started searching for what to do about this.

I am the one who is concerned about culture and religious significance not docs. I posted here to make people understand that pseudoscience and consuming random herbs and spices in the form of supplements is dangerous. There are many people who are taking turmeric milk as some healing agent, even I drank it a few times in the past when I wasn't aware of all this.
I've only read some of all the links you've shared, but most seem to be victims of chemically altered or adulterated supplements.
That was my point. They were the victims of toxins labelled as supplements. Liver failure due to herbs is a serious issue and we should be very careful with supplements and herbs.
In India, these products are more likely to be prescribed, or rather sold, by someone working for a corporation that uses such products as a part of pyramid scheme.

I see at least 15 different sites on google, selling turmeric supplements.

To everyone else reading this,
People seems to be giving positive reviews, everyone seems fine and not dying right ? Turmeric as a supplement is toxic but not a lethal substance, there is a difference. Toxins are supposed to be avoided, they can cause serious harm. Don't test your body for toxin tolerance. Most of these supplements have piperine extract so these are dangerous and should be avoided.
Also, many deaths due to liver failure are considered as death due to jaundice. I knew a few people personally who died because of liver failure which happened due to alcohol but the official cause of death was jaundice or some other condition which occurred because of liver damage. Unless the biopsy of every liver is performed there is no way to tell if these supplements were the real reason of death that's why these brands are able to avoid an outright ban.

Also, when Liver 52 was tested, Lead and Cadmium was found in it. o_O
You still seem to be talking about two different things and jumping to a third different conclusion with all this.
Personal experience is not evidence of anything. Just because you drink something assuming it is beneficial, or your general medicine doc who has no idea about herbs induced liver injury has recommended something, that doesn't mean his recommendations are automatically an evidence and I am jumping to wrong conclusion.

@powervgx You continue to just assume things.

All I mean is, you share valid concerns about these supplements but merge them with a few assumptions. That's what I pointed out here -
The three points above this makes sense; but this doesn't seem to, considering what I've just mentioned.
All I meant there was, supplements having adverse effects doesn't necessarily mean that
Turmeric has no health benefit other than its ability to give yellow color in the food.
Now, I don't claim that it does; nor do I claim that I know about all this; just that the latter can't be reasoned by the former. But, you continued to make further assumptions about religious or cultural influence. I tried explaining again -
You still seem to be talking about two different things and jumping to a third different conclusion with all this.

I never said any of this. You are straight-up changing my words here.

Granted, I didn't know about all these supplements available for anyone without a prescription. I didn't know people just buy these supplements out of their own whim. My experience with these has only been from those door-to-door salesmen selling such products from Amway and other similar corporations.
