Ok...

I am really pissed with India Post... :@

I went to the PO today to SpeedPost a Pendrive to Assam to itsmydamnlyf

The person on the counter made me open the sealed envelope and then refused to accept the package as it was a *valuable*.

I stated that I had sent and received Pendrives numerous times from my friends via speedpost and he said: "Woh city ya state mein hoga... Inter state nahi karte..." (It must have been within the state or city. We don't do it for other states). :@

Upon being a bit adamant and a stickler for rules, I asked him to give me some proof that the law doesn't permit them to do the same.

Then, he said: "Ais nahi hai ki karte hi nahi he... Karte hai par aapke paas invoice hai kya? Invoice denge toh hum phir receiver se Octroi lenge... Lambi procedure hai... Upar se, iss (pendrive) ke andar kya hai hume nahi maloom..." (It's not that we don't do it... We do it but do u have an invoice? If u provide an invoice, we'll charge the receiver octroi... It's a long procedure... On top of it, we don't know what this (pendrive) contains...).

After this complete BullS*hi, I asked him for the details of their Public Information Officer. I am sending an RTI application to them...

If this nonsense continues, we won't have any development for India. India Post should be something we all should feel proud of due to the vast expanse of our country and the reach of India Post... But, they are creating such an bad name for India... I feel ashamed... :(

Must be your bad luck dealing with a numbskull sitting at the counter :P I have used speed post for expensive stuff and even watches. The lady at the counter is always helpful and never asked me to open the package.
My last dealing with speed post was when I send a watch to the US. Cost only 550 bux. Reached the person in 15 days.
Try going to the GPO.

Yeah... Let me file the RTI application...

Once I get the reply, I'll take this matter right up to the GPO...

Nasty buggers... Useless nincompoops they are hiring... :@

Actually, we people staying in the NE are at the receiving end of things most of the times. I have had several issues with India Post over the past few months. I was always using their services to courier things I have sold to other members in the past but over the last few months, they have started refusing parcels all together. Earlier, I could just pack up an article in a box and cover it up in white paper. It was required that the box have 6 flat sides and no questions were asked. Then all of a sudden, they started asking for a parcel packed in white cloth and sealed using sealing wax. They accepted such parcels for the next few months. Then all of a sudden, over the past few months, they have stopped accepting all parcels. Only documents are accepted! I don't understand the logic behind this though. They are not forthcoming with any logical replies or reason behind this policy also.

Moreover, the private courier companies charge arbitrarily and have no fixed rates. For example, DTDC which advertises Rs. 80/- per kilo for a parcel on their website, charged me Rs. 250/- per kilo recently! On questioning them, they gave the reply that they incur losses for operating in NE and thus they charge this amount. Moreover, they claim that I should not complain as they are giving me a receipt for the amount charged and thus, this cannot be considered as over charging. Blue Dart is asking for Rs. 500/- per kilo to accept a parcel from Shillong! Go figure. :(

No point applying for RTI, You cant change these nincompoops. Just take your package to the GPO. You will have no trouble there.

lol I know how it feels! I feel the same way about those useless bsnl CSD people. first time I went there at 4.30 to get a 3G sim. The useless aunty sitting there doesnt want to move her lazy fat ass and asks me to come back the next day :@
Yesterday I went there at 4.15 to get the 2500 recharge. Again this stupid beech tells me to come the next day. I felt like ripping her head out. :@

@ SumitB: Some of the State laws in the NE states are very stringent from what I have heard. That's why many sellers on ebay also refuse to ship to these states. But this is complete nonsense. It needs to be sorted out soon... The people there would feel disconnected from the Rest of India and then it would hardly matter to them if they are part of India or not... :(

The buggers sitting in Delhi don't understand that the tea they sip while arguing over stupid issues in the parliament comes from the NE states... :@

@ Sandy: No mate... It's not about the shipping alone... It's about what happens next with numerous other INDIANS... :(

I will try at my level to set this right. I am well aware that 1 person cannot change the system... But the one person can try his best. And that's exactly what I am going to do.

I don't have "Vande-Mataram" in my signature just for Show Off... I mean it...

Sumit, a similar incident happened to me when I tried shipping my old CM690 chassis to Sidhu's place - Moga, Punjab. They refused to accept it stating the box appears to be fragile and wanted me to cover it in a cloth and seal it using wax. I refused and sent it by DTDC instead. It was expensive though.

OTOH, I sent a pair of G.Skill sticks to their H.O at Taiwan for Rs. 183. DHL was charging me a little less than 3.5k for the same consignment. Though I could not track it, it reached the destination within 6 days flat. :P

I have given up hope on my state atleast. I get looted and to make up, I loot the residents in what ever way I can. I may be a crook for some, but I am an advocate of the saying, "When in Rome, do what the Romans do" or as someone intelligent once said, "When in Rome, do the Romans". :P

^^ U have given up hopes... That is understandable.

But when u say that u loot residents in whatever way u can.... in that case, u have given up your rights as well. Rights to cry foul over the acts of others no matter how wrong they might be. :|

+1 to this.

I think PSU's have a tendency to put their worst/unmanageable employees in the customer service counters as they will bottleneck the work if they are placed anywhere else in the company. And of course, those are also the guys who have no clue about the procedures/regulations etc.

However if the OP goes ahead with the letters then it will help out at least a dozen or so other customers :hap2:

I know that but then these rights were taken away from me by the wrong doers in the first place. I pay through my nose for availing the services of these basics so I am forced to make others who avail of the services that I have to offer pay through their noses as well. Is this wrong? A basic blood test to determine your blood group costs Rs. 20/- else where in the country. I got this test done in Delhi personally. The same test was conducted on my wife here and I was charged Rs. 200/- The same is the case with these courier companies. The govt. has decided to give us the boot (as is demonstrated by the act of the Post Office) with many things.

Also, I don't blame the govt. here. The govt. of India is not getting a single penny from the region. For example, my state consists of 75-80% tribals. These tribals are exempted from paying Income Tax for life! The other 20% population pays their taxes which again is 10% of what they should be actually paying. They get away with bribing the officer occupying the chair. My state takes an annual loan of Rs. 100 crore from the RBI every year to pay off the salaries. Still, the state govt. employees don't get paid for months at ends. The money from the RBI goes to fill the pockets of the politicians and the cycle continues! No wonder, we have had 15 govts. in the last 30 years of state hood. Once, the governor of Meghalaya, Mr. Jacob famously said, "In Meghalaya, every person wants to be a MLA, Every MLA wants to be a Minister and every Minister wants to be the Chief Minister". If you happen to come to Shillong, you will notice that nearly 2 out of 10 vehicles, carries a red beacon! There is nothing but corruption here. Moreover, we, the non-tribals, do not have any say in the system. There is 80% reservation for the locals and they keep agitating for 90% reservation! The state is going to the dogs but we are helpless.

Anyways, we have gone off topic here. Please let us know what is the outcome of your RTI Application! :)

well, even I once went to PO for speed post a parcel and the man refused to take it in the way it was packed (general packing method)

He told that it must be covered with cloth and wax sealed at end..

On asking why so, he told that many issues came that while stuff was in transit (generally by rail) parcel was opened, stuff looted and refilled with twigs and other crap and repacked

If it is wax sealed, at the receiver end if seal is found to open, he can refuse to accept the stuff and a claim could be made..

PS : no idea how true the story was :P

I prefer the post offices over courier companies. Plus there are at least two post offices in every city in mumbai - one in east and one in the west. And every city is like 5-10 min from each other from a train. Some post offices refuse while others accept. How can you possibly argue with these govt employees? Its like a union with them. Just try a different post office.

WTF! I live in Assam too. I received a pendrive from hong kong via speed post. No issue at all. But it did take a god-damn month. But not accepting a consignment is just unacceptable.
These issues occur because they give posts to under-qualified people via bribing. :@

Don't use speed post BTW. DTDC is the best courier company AFAI-have-experienced. :)

hope nehaladsul's effort can do some good to the system. Indian post always has issues, lost parcel, tampering with the parcel, refusal and so on. With Dtdc i had no issues so far.

Good question...

He is the Public Information Officer and he gave me the detailed postal address so that I can address my queries to him....

Isn't that cool enough...??? :@

You are sadly mistaken, IMHO they may take some extra time but the probability of loosing the parcel/theft is the least via them.

Although I cant speak for NE states India Post, but the Post office in my area takes anything I give them without asking me to open the package or even asking me whats inside the parcel and also at quite good rates and follow the tariff(s) given at their website.

@Mephistopheles

The status of the package that you sent me through speedpost is not updated for last two days - and they don't pick up phone!!
