Infosys vs my own startup

Find friends who don't have a job yet....or not as lucky. Build a team you can trust.

Money is very important, if you are planning to live on immediate returns.....there may well be a case where it doesn't work out as soon as you expect it to be. So be prepared.

its worth working at a place like Infosys, people do succeed in large companies too, despite the armies of retards working as peers, subordinates and even superiors :D

:D I totally agree!

@OP

I will be honest with you:

1. You are a fresher, have a good idea in mind which u believe can be sold. However please understand this, no matter how good idea u have, if you don't have proper execution, it wont be sold. And execution comes through understanding about how its done in real world. In current world, products are not sold based on what they are, but the associated support with it.

2. It seems by your statement that you would be the only one who will support it. Do you think any customer is going to agree to that? There always has to be a fall back. A peer followed by supervisor followed by manager and so on. So in your case anyway you need to find someone who will be able to give the support. In that case there is no option for you. You have to find someone additional.

3. Can your idea sustain for minimal 3 years? Can u guarantee a protection that some big fish would not come down the line and steal the idea and business from you? Do u have the patent? If no then its not even your own, no matter how hard you shout.

4. In big companies (read services like infy and others) and small companies (read product based) you are exposed to standard/practices which no matter what will not be exposed to you in any indian office, school being the last of last bastion for that matter of fact. So if you start your startup, you are going to need someone who is going to give you guidance, if you would like to nurture your career you need that. I am honestly not trying to discourage you here, but the matter of fact is, I know couple of them who couldn't do much for more than 2 years and then settled down as computer dealers. They never made the courage to admit the lost gamble and get back to doing a job... not acceptable for them, as that would be looked down by the society in which they live. So bottom line, you are going to miss that experience.

5. I am sure you have the capabilities and talent to go identify genuine ideas. Best would be hon your skills further, nurture them in the organization. A kid like you I am sure would do better past training. Then you will be more aware and better capable of handling business.

Bottomline: What you are thinking of is business (Ask any business man out there, no one would advice you of the business without thinking of all negatives, cause negative taken care is the profit gained) and think of it terms in business. Once that thought is done add your pleasure in it. Cause pleasure alone doesn't get you any dough.

Last not not very least, all organization aid in building you a network that goes long way in terms of your future career. School's or similar organization, am not aware or you can say fail to understand is going to aid in that.

^^ Yes no guarantee of where you will go.

Myself have done Bharat Darshan (Hyderabad -> Bangalore -> Pune)

Dude, if you get in Infy now then there are 99.99% chances that you will be on BENCH. Here experienced people are currently on BENCH.

The 0.01% is left on your luck that you will get a project as soon as you complete the training. Moreover the training period has been increased.

But But...the training period is AWESOME to say the least, just an extension of your college.

If your friends are not going to be with you, and you are talking about selling the product to 3-4 schools, how in the name of God are you alone going to support it? You cannot hire anyone as you want to take care of the support in the initial phases yourself.

Let me ask you this and excuse me if I sound rude or a pessimist - is your software product good enough? Considering that you and your friends have made this, I am sure that there would not be any documentation or a product plan that you may have worked on before you started it, right? Even the help documentation would have been self made instead of some professional technical writer. If the software design is not scalable, after 10 change request, you'd find that making further changes to the product is just not possible without a complete redesign of the data structures and architecture.

From what I know, there are a lot of readymade products for schools available and quite a few of the schools in Mumbai at least are using it. They do have logins for the parents to track their wards daily progress and interact with the faculties. These are big schools that I am talking about - so the product would not be a throw away. So you do not have something that is NOT available in the market. How can you be sure that the unique features that you have in your product do not exist in other products? Have you evaluated ALL such products?

Keep the product with you - software does not have expiry dates. Get into Infy, get experience and when you start having spare time, start work on your product. Make it really top notch and then think of parallelly starting something. You'd get enough experience by then to understand market needs and the difference between software projects and software products.

And most importantly - do not think that choosing Infy over this is a let down and you are being a coward. No way. You are choosing to be better prepared for the future - both yours and your products. There are tons of people who are extremely successful in the software industry and work for big companies - how do you think these companies make so much money!!

A lot depends on what technology you get when you join infy.. if you get tech like mainframe then it won't be of any use for your personal business. if you get java/.NET it might help. so its all luck once you join a S/w firm, most of them don't care what tech you want. But again a corporate experience can bring other qualities which you won't learn anywhere else if you have never worked. once you are working, you can find some good friends who can do partnership with you.. Many of my friends are going the same way.. Even I'm ready to jump into the wagon whenever a good opportunity/idea comes..

Btw if I were you i wud start my own business despite of knowing the benefits of joining a S/w company as i described above.. :)

Go join an organization like TIE (talent ideas entrepreneurship/ the indus entrepreneurs). You will meet many like minded people (hint hint!) who can guide you/ fund you/ join you in starting a new venture.

Thnx. a bunch !

+1 for the own route......you are preety much sure u want to do it....and ur post is more of a right / wrong thing to TE people as approval / denial to see peoples reactions....and they sure have been positive. Since u have put everything in the correct perspective and also have gone ahead and defined your objectives...please dont let this hamper you.

Go for the own route with a positive way ahead......today 3 schools, then there will be more schools, maybe other education institutions would approach you for something similar that you could develop for them and ofcourse there is the word - mouth advertisement that can push up things in the +ve perspective for you.

All the very best in advance!!!

Thanks a lot guys! I've decided to work hard, complete the product within 15 days or so, and then start asking schools. If I do get 2-3 orders, then I'll proceed with this. Else, well there is still time for Infy :)

You can also take help of fellow TE members who have contacts in schools or whose parent / relatives are teaching and they can help you with your product

few pennies from my side...

Since you have 2 months to join Infy, Keep working on ur product , do more n more researchon how to bring down cost of your product and see to it that less maintainence is required.

From My personal experience what I can say is ,good platform is must for anyone who wants to have their own startup, either in Money or experience. Its better you join Infosys and see how a company works , come across lot of functionalities in the company. With this knowedge and little brand-push you can go ahead with your startup

I'd recommend you go ahead with your start-up.

Though i agree with Kneo's points, you'd be postponing work on your software which you are passionate about... after 8 months you may get stuck in a "comfort-zone"..

All the best Checksum :)
