We may or may not go with IG but we will eventually be changing the name to whatever seems right. You are free to suggest as that is what will help us.

My view is neutral on this topic of changing or not changing the name. TE or whatever new name its called will always be the same to me. Only handful of people know TE and only they visit the forums. I have to agree with Renegade, that most people cant recollect the TE name if told once or twice or thrice. Saying such people should stay out of TE is mean. Not everyone has excellent pronunciation skills in english or any language. If a person wants to join the forum, we should encourage them rather than drive them away saying they're not able to pronounce a name correctly. No one is perfect in this world.

If the name changes and helps bring less or more knowledgeable people to the forums and helps newcomers to the world of computers to get some help, whats the harm in it? People are so stubborn on looking at the bad side of things that they forgot there's a good side too.

I doubt you will get any suggestions as most people do not want name change at all and that's why no suggestions.
Are you sure? The way I look at it, most people do not feel any difference if the name is changed, hence there are no suggestions. The participation in this thread of naysayers is quite less compared to the people who have visited the thread. As of writing this post 190 members have visited this thread. Only a handful have said no to the name change. So that means you guys opposed to name change are in the minority. Saying most are opposed is far fetched now.

There are sentiments attached to the name. You'l only piss people off by changing it. Not to mention 6 years worth of SEO juice, rankings, brand value and love, all for a few lamers who cant remember the name on the first try. IMHO its a very simple and non-cliched name (techenclave), if they cant remember it, they most likely aren't the correct audience.

You can shift the blog there, it sounds like a good name for it and would make more sense.

So nobody has a suggestion but everyone has an opinion.

We already have a well established easily recognizable name "TECHENCLAVE" it is simple and not pretentious, its how we have known the forums for past 6 years.
Instantgeeks sounds very "wannabe". and i dont have anyting better than "Techenclave "

Renegade, to reiterate, the suggestion is to move the blog there, and let the forum be here, because the domain name seems very apt for a blog. Also let the links cross domains on both homepages so that there's more cross traffic too. Its a win-win.

That's your way of looking at things !

To me it seems like everyone's suggesting sticking with the wonderful/thoughtful current name !

I fit that description. The reason for that is i know Mods/Admins have already made up their minds to change the name (as confirmed in no uncertain terms by post #82 above) and no amount of naysaying is gonna make an iota of difference. So no point in flogging a dead horse. Just don't equate non-participation with agreement !

Couldn't agree more.

Easy people, these same mods have been here for 6 years, lets be constructive. Im sure they care just as much as we do. Relax and let reason take its course.
Sri Sri Party baba out. :P

First of all, we are not naysayers. You are taking us (at least me) wrong. And it's not about English speaking skills. When I joined this forum, I could hardly speak English (being a Marathi medium student and a person who used to live in a very small town). I didn't find any problem pronouncing TechEnclave, though. I don't know who said that "stay away" thing. A visitor will return if he loves the community, people, quality of material. He will remember the name, no matter how hard it is. I visit xda-developers, ipmart-forum, webdevrefinery daily and I remember the name, no matter how hard they are to remember.

And I don't know how can someone come with a conclusion, "the name change will help MORE people". Don't we do it since past 7-8 years?

Well, my experience says vBulletin thread count is total number of times people (members or guest) visit the particular thread, it doesn't count unique visitors. :-)

Again, nobody is naysayer here. We just love TE the way it is.. If you really want to change the name, go ahead. But this is totally unprofessional. And, I am expecting and ready for the aggressive reactions on $(this).post..

:-) I know, nothing is in our hand.. It's just that, changing the brand name will not benefit the forum.

Well that would be much more than 190, what 6pack was talking about was the number of "members who have read this thread" count, which right now is at 201. That's 201 unique members.

Do you really believe that Techenclave is a brand? Do people join TE because of its name or because of a google search?

It's just that, I love this place as it is. (It was awesome back in 2008-09) though. I still miss the activity we had in 2008-09.
I wasn't a member here at that time, but there was good amount of activity+fun before forum migrated to IP Boards. Even though it came back to vB, but it wasn't at all like earlier.

Yes, I do. The name TechEnclave is beyond just a name. As I said previously, when we (my friends on TE) meet, we always talk about TE stuff. People join this forum because somehow they found it valuable. No matter from where they have came from. The popular website is always considered as brand, it can never be JUST ANOTHER WEBSITE.. :-)

Something tells me all Mods, global mods and super mods and whatever other mods are there have already made up their decision to change name and this is just FYI sort of thing :|

 sorry couldn't help it.
aggressive reactions from whom? if you read the thread from beginning, the discussion is quite peaceful from both sides. no one is or has been aggressive.

It's just that, changing the brand name will not benefit the forum. - Care to tell us how you have come to that conclusion?

But isn't the confusing name the beauty of it? It has a differentiation about it in some ways.
I remember when i used tell my friends about the site , they used to think that it is some high funda tech above their brains site and boy i used to love that.If you guys are deviating from this , i guess it would upset a decent chunk of the current userbase.

I think the current problem of TE is mainly because of a plethora of "What to buy threads" and that is the reason i feel we do not have the discussions we had about a couple of years back. The quality has fallen a little bit IMHO.
If you are basically looking to increase the new user count i agree thats a viable strategy , but it would deviate from the whole foundation of this forum.

Anyways , these are just my thoughts and hope that we get back to what we were in terms of discussions.

Godspeed

Ummm, I felt the heat somehow :bleh:

Well, changing the name of the forum will damage our Search Engine Position. I remember we moved back from IPB to vB just because of better SEO on vBulletin. Why destroy everything. It will take a lot of time to gain the same position on Search Engine results. What I am saying is, just enhance this forum, make it better looking with some cool new features.

Well, this is my personal opinion and I am sure most of the people think the same.

Can I take the liberty and make some changes to that line and ask you for your opinion.

I think you have relatively decent knowledge of how these things work since you have yourself dabbled into. Changing the domain name of a site does not impact the SEO. You can keep everything intact using 301 redirects.

301 will help people to redirect to the new place until Search Engine index gets updated. Well, we can still rebuild the empire. But nobody really knows how long search engines will take to index all the new links. Google is smart enough to catch 301 strategies, but what about others? Backlinks will be dead unless you have set permanent 301 redirection to new domain. Now the question, for how long are you going to keep this top domain level redirection? forever? If yes, then what's the point of changing the name?
