Now this is one cool product from Nvidia

NVIDIA expects designs based on the Ion platform to debut in the first half of 2009, but I’d be surprised if we didn’t see something in the first quarter. Not only can Ion make netbooks a lot better, but the design is small enough that it can be used elsewhere.

NVIDIA has been arguing that the GPU is more important than the CPU and with Ion is the chance to prove its case. Intel’s slowest CPU paired with a more expensive graphics solution than what Intel would rather you buy with Atom. My opinion has always been that you need a balanced approach, but the Ion platform should open up some interesting usage models: netbooks that can transcode and play HD video?

It's an interesting move, one that simply makes sense. If the prices of SSDs would drop to where they could be an affordable alternative to a regular hard disk you could actually build a very quick and quite portable PC out of Ion. One thing is for sure: NVIDIA just raised the bar for the minimum level of performance you can expect from PCs in 2009, regardless of price point.

quite nice,at last atom has a good chipset .tho it doesnt offer much power savings, gives a good pef boost.

Plays hi-def videos, converts video with badaboom, plays games (yes it does play crysis :P at 10fps)

A video review with a small footage of it playing cod4!

The problem is,this is going to be shortlived.

Intel will go SoC on future atom's.

and Tegra is a bit underpowered for a nettop.

No,that wasnt my point.

nv want to stay in nettop biz,but they'll run out of options in a year (unless via decides again to give chipset to nv).

He he he... Intel spikes Nvidia dreams

Intel decided not to embrace the holiday spirit this year when it comes to Nvidia as the company has issued a statement with regards to Nvidia's Ion platform and the usage of Atom processors and the short of it is that Intel has no intention of selling its Atom processors without an adjoining Intel chipset.

This is a smack in the face for Nvidia who was hoping to be able to pair up Intel's Atom processor with its own Geforce 9400M chipset to create some rather powerful nettop computers. We can't help but feel a little bit sorry for Nvidia as after all it's Christmas and Intel could at least have waited until after the holiday's to break the bad news to Nvidia.
