I just booked a tatkal rail ticket for my cousin from irctc. During booking 20 seats were available but due to its extreme slow server and after minutes of processing the ticket was booked but as a WL.

Thanks to their ever always pathetic server loads and what not.

Now i want to cancel this ticket which isnt a confirmed one but waiting list.

This is what the rule says on their site:

For Tatkal Tickets Booked as e-Tickets:

No refund will be granted on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal tickets. For contingent cancellation and waitlisted Tatkal ticket cancellations, charges will be deducted as per existing Railway rules. Partial cancellation of Tatkal e-tickets is allowed but at least one passenger with ID card printed on ERS/VRM should not be cancelled. On cancellation of all the passengers whose ID card details is printed on ERS/VRM, all the passengers on that e-ticket will be cancelled.

So as my ticket is waitlisted tatkal one, can i cancel and get the remaining refund or will i loose the whole money

Yes bro you will get refund. Be sure. Rule says that suppose your ticket contains multiple seats, if any of the single seat advances even to RAC, you'll be charged for cancellation and if left as it is, the ticket will not get cancelled automatically as normally it happens.

Apart from that, 20 available seats, then getting a waiting is seriously not surprising. I have experience of worse. What if 200 seats are available and still you get a waiting? Sometimes it not only the servers, its huge rush too (especially in tatkal).

One tip- Never use chrome especially in load times, it leads to transaction failure many times. My fav (in this case) is IE9, opera is also fine.

for WL there is no RAC... either you will be allocated a seat or not. In case of partial confirmation (only one of the passengers gets confirmed berth) you need file a TDR request in IRCTC website.

if your WL ticket doesn't get confirmed refund will automatically be reinitiated.

There is RAC for WL. I had for many times. Rest as you said.

I think IRCTC charges Rs.60 for cancellation of a 2 A/C WL tkt. Charges are diffrent for all classes and I think there are no special charges for cancellation of W/L tatkal tickets.

Guys the current status is WL3 from WL4. Shall i wait till tomorrow to get it confirmed? Also i have chosen a lower berth seat, so after confirmation will i get that specific berth or they will put me on any birth getting vacant?

Also it clearly states that for TATKAL you wont get any refund if it gets CONFIRMED but for WL/RAC wtc there isnt any such rule. So can ic ancel the same tomorrow or should i cancel it right now?

They can put you in any berth. But not until you selected the option of enforcing the seat option while booking the e-ticket.

If the ticket remains WL, it will be automatically cancelled you need not cancel it.

There is nothing to lose actually, you will either get the ticket confirmed or it will get canceled automatically. Anyway wait till chart preparation, seats from many reserved quotas are released at that time, so it may get confirmed.

Also, When you get a tatkal waiting ticket, it gets more priority to confirm wrt normal waiting tickets. So, W/L 3 is very less. Normally you can expect upto W/L 10 to get confirm (obviously in sleeper, not in A/C). But totally depends upon your boarding point.

Generally speaking, vacancies that arise in General quota via cancellations are allotted to General waiting list first. Vacancies that arise from Tatkal cancellations are utilized for Tatkal waiting list. So, logically, the chances of a General waiting list getting confirmed are much higher.

However, when unfilled quotas that are earmarked (defense, higher official, senior citizen, etc.) are released, the tatkal waiting list gets priority for these berths.

Not exactly.. both have got different quota. Chances of tatkal waiting ticket getting confirmed are very less nowadays..

I am saying this from my experience man. Plus I have been told by several railway related people. There was only a single chance when my tatkal didn't got confirm, otherwise it always got. And it depends on trains and on boarding also. Plus if the ticket is of a female, then the chances are much higher.

Anwyays i cancelled the ticket yesterday itself after my last post here. Will be doing another booking shortly. Still thanks for all the infos guys.

This info will be helpful for many others seeking similar queries.

IRCTC's site has become so lame and slow. The payment gateway also times out on the return-back. No ticket, card debited.

some tips for booking tatkal, use icici and sbi net banking... SBI is better (just login authentication only for IRCTC)..all other gateway requires additional transaction authentication..and some requires SMS authentication

I always try from two different ID... and use only firebox(with mutiple profiles), one login around 7.30 and another around 7.45, so that requests were handled by 2 different servers, some time one server might be heavily loaded.. so it will be super slow..(all this are my assumptions..)

Use roboform for auto-filling journey details.. OK my success rate.. 95% and in that 5% failure rate, most of them due to bsnl 3g!
