Budget 71-90K Is 3070 Overkill for 1080p Gaming ?

Summary : I was going to buy 2060 Super, but after 3000 series release thinking of buying 3070. My Config will be r5 3600, 3070, MSI b550 PRO VDH WIFI.

Question : I have a 1080p Monitor (Benq XL2411p). Is 3070 overkill for it ? Should i get a 2000 series RTX and save money ? Will be saving close to 25k ( -15k on 3070 and -8k on b550 Motherboard ).
 
If 1080 is your thing wait for 3060...dont go for old generation..3060 will come around 30k..
Or go for 3060ti if you cant wait
 
Itall depends on which types of games u primarily play, and what kind of fps u aim at, like if u are an eSports gamer with 144 fps aim for 2060super , it'll do u good , if u like aaa games at max details gofor 3070

Stick with the older cards. 3xxx series was good considering the value they brought but its a really bad investment atm since AMD said that RDNA3 is already well into development and it will be a massive upgrade over RDNA2 just like that was over RDNA. Nvidia too is jumping at 5nm instead of working on a 'Super' refresh series which means they expect RDNA3 to be pretty badass.

I would suggest using 2xxx gpus/Cloud based gaming services for 1080p for forseeable future. Tbh what will you even do with a highly capable gpu rn, there are no major releases on PC in 2021-22 except maybe Halo and Diablo which again dont really need a heavy gpu to process.
2023-24 is when we will get GTA6, TES6, Star Citizen, Bioshock, Crimson Desert, etc. Splurge then.

It is a bit of an overkill but not by that much specially if you play on 144Hz. If you have the money go for it, it will allow you to play most AAA games at high refresh rates & you will have an option to upgrade to a QHD display down the line without having to worry about upgrading your GPU.

If you don't want to spend that much, consider getting a 3060Ti or a 3060 whenever it launches. I wouldn't suggest buying an RTX 2XXX series at all as most of them are still overpriced & bad value relative to 3XXX series. Even the used options are not much better value right now as most of these are being sold at a premium. I am sure prices will fall further whenever low end RTX 3XXX series cards matching performance of RTX 2XXX series launch in the future & as availability improves.

Question: How will you be saving 8k on motherboard if you are going for RTX 2XXX series? You do not need a PCIE4 motherboard to take advantage of a 3XXX series GPU. The performance difference between a PCIE4 & PCIE3 is almost negligible specially considering your monitors low resolution. In all, if you are going with a B550 motherboard just for this, you can rest assured that you don't need to & can save money here in both the scenarios.

At 1080p reso even a 1650Super might suffice your gaming needs. Really depends on the games you play. RTXs card really shine on higher reso not 1080p.

3060 will age well
 
Guys, what you need to consider is, are you buying the card to play today's games, then yes the 3070 maybe overkill, but if you are looking at keeping the card for the next 3 to 5 years, you should the most GPU you can get at current price/budget. Compare graphs GPUs across 2 generations, the 1080Ti does about 55-60 fps at max on Cyberpunk 2077, if you are into high refresh rate gaming (not esport titles), good luck to you.

Edit - my statement is supported by @BluDev graph, all games that push the 'avg' are games that are more than a year older, if you try and average the latest games on high, the 3060Ti average between 70 to 90 fps in recently launched games, for future titles, good luck.

1080 still manages to survive pretty well today and may be for next 2 yrs as well for the mid gamer. But no point spending those 20k for old technology but still a steal deal if you manage to get it under 18k. (though current dreamers here still selling it beyond 25k as if they are holding to some aging wine..)
Eye candies and all those gpu juicing will even throw 3070 out of gear for extreme gamers by 2025 where it might average around 50fps on then games.

So it all depens on what resolution you wanna game and what all eye candies you prefer.

3060Ti is more than enough and if 3060 launched then that. reset will not be utilized and I can see that you don't have a multi monitor setup too so no need for more. ha, if you get the fe edition of 3070 then buy it at 45k. its a great deal for that price.

The benchmarks are above for the 3060Ti, you should have a look at the same for the 1080, it would just about 1080p 60 on high, and then for games to come, its anyone's guess based on optimizations.
 
Answer depends on situation:

1. Want to play AAA games targetting 60 FPS ultra - 3070 is not overkill for many games (esp. the new ones coming out including Cyberpunk)
2. Want to play e-sports titles (CSGO, fortnite, pubg etc.) at 1080p 144 Hz - 3070 is overkill. But for COD, it may not be overkill
3. Want to play AAA games targetting 120 FPS or above - R5 3600 is a bottleneck, so 3070 will be underutilized in many games (GPU usage less than 90%). e.g. AC:Od will be limited by R5 3600 at 1080p ultra to about 70 FPS. 3070 can generate more with e.g. a 10900K or a 5600X etc.

(I have a 5700XT and R5 3600 OC'd to 4.2, my CPU is still a bottleneck in many AAA games). For 60 FPS 1080p or even 1440p, 5700XT is good, but suddenly turns bad when it comes to 1080p 144Hz as it gets bottlenecked by that R5 3600
 
A little offtopic, but I recently got a good deal on a AMD Vega 56 with the reference design. Initially I was a bit worried about the sound, as its a blower type of design, but once I sat down and tuned it I was able to keep the blower below 50% at most times and now its just a bit of a hum in the background when playing games. I used to use a GTX 1060 6GB before this and the differencce between the two is night and day. This card is probably the best bang for the buck for 1080 gaming at the moment. And it performs in the same range as the GTX 1080 in most of the titles.

And let me say the software and drivers have improved by leaps and bounds since I last used an AMD card. Bottom line, there are far cheaper cards that can easily do 1080 gaming at extremly good frame rates, if you are willing to look off the beaten path.

BTW, I dont play esports games, more of the single player AAA games kind of guy. Have been running Assasins Creed Valhalla on 1080 with high settings and getting 80+fps easily.
