Is it really worth it?

Hey everyone!

The "Cyber Cafe" guy near my college just bought a brand new X-BOX 360 alongwith a plasma tv and excitedly told us to go and check it out. He's charging 40Rs per hour.. Quite reasonable for a next-gen console.. So we decided to go and check it out. Presently he has only game, PGR3 , which i think is complimentary.

I had only word for it... It SUCKED bigtime!!! (And please don't think I've got anything consoles. I've played half my games on the PS2 and truly loved it:hap2: ) Now this setup must have cost him around 50-60k. We can assemble a high-end pc with this budget. (No offense to Rio and the other Gods of Happening Rigs. i'm a mere mortal! :p ) I've played the entire NFSMW on my friend's comp with 7600gt and would anyday vote for it compared to PGR3...

Maybe other games like Gears of War, F.E.A.R, and P.E.S 6 will provide a better experience. But, still the cost doesn't seem justfiable..

What say?

A TV is not add on cost to a console...

What plasma TV b/w?

Yeah that game sucks...lol...I dunno...thats what most people say.

I won't agree with you on this... All the graphics and the eyecandy is only visible if and only if you invest in a high-def TV.

Otherwise it is similar to buying a 7900 gt and still playing at a resolution of 640*480 :p :p

Ofcourse but TV's prime objective is not to play games....for most people atleast....
Most people dont buy good TV to play games.

Dude u can't start judging the console on it's initial releases... this is just the initial phase of game development for the 360 let a few years go and c how the games improve over time... same thing has happened for all consoles... but you will not need to invest in any sort of new hardware if u have a console even 4 yrs later... but the games would have improved a lot by then... but in the case of a pc... u need to keep investing. So it would definintely be a cost saving investment in the long run.

well ...I am running a C2D rig with a 7950GT card on a Dell 2405 @1920x1200

My 360 is hooked up to a 37" LCD panel again @ 1920x1200 (actually at 1080i ..which leaves a small black strip on top and bottom of the screen).

- here's my 2$ worth of input:

1) NFS MW looks pretty much the same on my PC or on my 360. Cannot really tell any difference in graphics. Gameplay is however "smoother" on the console (on my pc v1.3 stutters often..i believe this is due to the fact that it does not like dual core cpu's).

2) Most of the other games that i've played look identical. Gameplay is much simpler and faster (load times, install , saves etc.).

Overall both cost me the same (approx 200K each), however I spend more time playing on the 360 since it only takes me 30 secs to get to gameplay mode on the 360 vs approx. 50 - 60 secs. on my pc.

man i wish i had that kind of money to get that kinda lazy for 30 secs of my life lol:tongue:

iceman, I assume you live in Bangalore - try to make it for the next LAN event :)

@siddharth, everyone's idea of having a good time differs, so if someone spends a lakh on an xbox360 + LCDtv and is having fun, good for him :)

hi iceman....hey we didnt have an introduction thread abt u at all :)
\maybe we can have one now...
you seem to be a gadget freak like some folks around this place.

ok to keep this on topic I still dont think tvs have to be considered as add on cost..sure u need a good tv for good graphics but a tv is a tv man...

GRAW did not make you feel you are playing a next-gen game ? What about dead rising ? NFS : MW was never a next gen game... I have seen PGR3 on Macdonalds ( They have PLASMA's instead of LCD's ) and it sucks Why ? because PGR3 comes free only with the core bundle = normal non hd cables and LOL playing with on a 480i resolution on a UH 40" ( Assuming since its PLASMA and they usually start at that range ) should look lame...
I have played games on the console and the good ones and they are worth every penny, i did not have a crap PC earlier but i can tell you this console plays games the way they are meant to be played. Tell your friend to get the proper HD-AV cables and they play the game on 720p and switch on the HDTV on the wire....

I played by mistake on TV settings and 480i on my 32" LCD HDTV and it sucked so bad that if anyone even saw 1 second of that game running on that reso he will beleive that there is no difference between 360 and PS1... thats how bad the game will look on improper settings....

The problem is very very very few people have actually seen the game run on proper 720p setting with HDTV option turned on... Every kiosk i have seen is running on 480i and it surely doesnt give a good impression...

Ok guys i will post pics of how games are looking on my TV and then maybe some of you might appreciate 360 :)

akS !

You consider the monitor in your PC costs, don't ya? :p

Exactly my point,since the beginning...:eek:hyeah:

@Rio- Maybe you are right... after all people do buy porsches and ferraris when an audi or a bmw will do just fine... :p :p

@Whateve_r - I totally agree that the experience provided by consoles in most of the games cannot be matched by a keyboard and a mouse... As a matter of fact I've even mentioned that earlier. I personally feel that PS2 is still the best console if you look in terms of price & availability of titles...:hap2:

I haven't yet seen an X360 in person. No place seems to have it demoed around here but I'm beginning to suspect Kemp Fort might have it on display.

The difference being that monitors are almost explicity used for computers whereas TV's are not primarily for gaming. In the end, whether it's an add-on cost or not really depends on the user.

While the xbox360 is on display, there are no games installed on it to test - really lame, all you can do is scan through the menu :p

^^ You mean you're ready to spend 30K on an xbox and god knows how much on games, then play that on a SDTV over composite, and then complain it doesn't look any special and sounds bad as well?
Thats like getting a ferrari and putting old used tyres on it :O (or something like that)
Edit: Also, the TV doesn't have to be exclusive for gaming. All DVD players have progessive scan now, and we're even getting upscaling players at affordable preices now. Plus, it seems Star Movies is starting widescreen broadcasts :D As the Philips jingle goes, "It just keeps getting better, getting better all the time" :hap2:

@sidharth
