Is it wise buying the nokia N8 now?

Since i have collected 18k, now i am looking to buy a mobile. I am seriously considering the N8. I dont care about apps and games since my itouch 4g is there to fill this gap. I want a phone for-

1) Browsing

2) Camera

3) Good design [Must]

4) Good build quality

5) Can handle basic stuffs like listening to music, messaging, watching occational videos etc.

6) Dont care about apps and games

and please dont suggest me any phones bove 3.7" since my hands are small and they look awkward. OS doesnt matters whether its Symbian or Android

Thanks,

Souvik Roy

@op yes. Go ahead and get it. you wont regret.

i'm inclined towards N8 too, for its camera but i game too, so should i buy this phone considering i want a gaming phone (and seriously, a good camera) and don't care about apps as all the popular apps make their way to symbian..

i was actually looking for an android but after using e71, i just can't use those plasticky phones.. i mean, spending 15-18k for that build-quality isn't convincing for me..

if camera is not high priority, check Xperia Neo V which costs less than 18k and Xperia Pro (around 19k). Both have good camera and thanks to android and powerful hardware, you get to play countless games.

If you are looking for a good camera phone then, Nokia N8 is ace. Its camera is great. It is still winner even when lots of good camera phones are available due to its camera quality. The basic stuffs work well in the phone. Design of the device is nice and built quality is great.

If you are not crazy for Android, N8 is must buy for you.

They do,

Have you used any of them.

Even age old HD2 nad DHD has fantastic camera, though not as good all round performer as SGS2 or Note or N8. But most 20k+ HTC phones have snappers capable of taking some quality pictures as far as mobile phone cameras go.

And N8 compression is bad. Its really bad. It looks great on phone and great on screen when its cropped. But make it 100% and you see the flaw of this phone.

I am not saying this just to say it. I have personally done the tests and even posted them here on TE last year with comparison with other phones like SGS2. N8 totally washes out details.

The worst thing in this industry is hype. Its same story with iPhone 4. People used to go uuuuu ahhh over its pictures when in reality it had very bad sharpning filter and completely inaccurate colours (4s fixed that to large extent). But people simply would not acknowledge that (here on the forums specially.)

I still have N8, HD2, Note and iPhone 4S with me. I can do the tests again when I get time over coming weekend. But that wont change these facts. Compared to what is available in the market today, N8 image quality is nothing special.

Here is the link to my old post where I did direct comparison between N8 and SGS2.

http://www.techencla...ost__p__1506951

There specially look at the second picture. Look at the fins of graphics card heatsinks towards right hand side. Perfect example of loss of details in N8. They get washed out and looks like a blurr. SGS2 captures individual fins and more details.

Dude, you lost your credibility when you told HTC make good cameraphones
<
. I donno if I should waste my time on this post.

I have N8 and believe me, No cameraphone till now matches it. I have compared it with my friends O2X, Focus, Neo V, Wildfire S, Galaxy Ace, Nokia 701, HTC Mozart etc.

I saw the your post (the link you have given) and there is obvious handshake while shooting with N8 without flash, and with flash, flash has not fired properly. I agree that GS2 camera is good, still, N8 beats it hands down in resolved details, natural colours and low light capability (Of course, there may be one or two instances where GS2 takes better photos, but I believe it will be like once in 20-30 photos). You can go and check any site or forum. If you are really getting better photos with GS2 than N8, then obviously your N8 lens has some defect, get it checked by Nokia Care.

As for the compression size, yes, N8 compresses the photos where required, still it retains more detail than any other phone. So why are you frowning about it?

Please go to this page and check yourself. Just select ISO 12233 Chart, move the green Rectangle over those colored bars and the scale (where you can see Colour Chart #13).

http://www.gsmarena....1&idPhone3=3252

I could show you my own photos, but thy wont be useful as I dont have GS2 with me to compare with the same scene.

And as for your HD2 has a great camera, I almost fell down from my chair laughing
<
. I think even Micromax phones will take better pictures than HD2. If you can take even a single really good photo by HD2, please show me. As a matter of fact all HTC cameras suck big time bar some very new phones like Titan (not available in India). Please check the links below or watch the photos once again taken from your HD2.

http://www.gsmarena....eview-418p9.php

Even new HTC Sensation comes last among the 8MP cameras. Check the photos yourself.

http://www.gsmarena....eview-608p3.php

As a phone, GS2 is years ahead of N8, but as a Cameraphone, N8 knocks it down (Apart from Full HD Recording). Give credit where it's due.

I was wondering when someone will come along totally unwilling to accept N8 camera is not perfect.

How about actually seeing the other photos in gsmarenas own photo comparison tool. ISO chart is good only upto certain extent. And like I said, HD2 camera is not as good all round performer as current modern phones, but it takes excellent snaps and videos if you know what you are doing. Same is the case with other HTC phones. They are good outdoors, not so good indoors.

There is a massive thread on XDA about this same issue of N8 where multiple people have submitted the sample images. N8 definitely looses details due to compression. Thats the fact. There is no rocket science involved here. N8 image files are less than half the size of others who have lower MP sensors. That is a dead give away of the compression used. The comparison tool on gsmarena uses flat posters. I will try to dig up those threads at XDA. (its either in SGS2 section or Note section, I dont remember but I might have this bookmarked on my old laptop somewhere )

You can see some signs of it in Gsmarena's own colour photo comparison tool but thats only good for so much as they have taken a photo of a photo under ideal conditions. Get out in actual 3D world and N8 falls short of the newer offerings from Samsung in these areas.

There is nothing wrong with N8 that I have. It takes some excellent pics and its still the only phone which can take images that are focused in darker environment thanks to guided focus. But that does not mean the problems I mentioned does not exist. And they are extra obvious in indoor pictures as there there are relatively less high frequency areas in the picture (sharp or more obvious changes in colour changes) due to rather limited light illumination. This is where N8 has a weakness.

Prior to N8 the best thing we had were things like Pixon which were way inferior to what N8 had to offer. N8 was a milestone when it comes to cameras and there were not many good ones to compete against that. And not many bothered to compare the newer 8MP camera sensors that were released last year to N8 in the real world. Its when people who had owned N8 started using these phones, they became aware of the shortcomings of N8.

Get out of your blind faith in N8 and go check out actual real world photo comparison submitted by the users of this technology

I am not saying N8 is a bad camera phone, I am just stating that it has its own limitations. S2 and Note may not have all the features of N8 camera but they are overall better performers in real world mixed indoor and outdoor photography. People slammed engadget (and most of the times people are right in slamming engadget for their shoddy pseudo journalism ) when they found out the same thing which did not come as a surprise to me as I have experienced that first hand with N8.

Coming to HTC, dude, you need to follow developer community. Look whats going on with HD2 and latest ports and then head to youtube and check out what its sensor can actually do. It still is one very good camera sensors to take pics and videos. Camera function does not restrict to still pictures, even then I would still say HD2 taken excellent pictures with the current WP firmware. Sensation had serious issue in its camera firmware for long time. Same was the case with DHD. And like I said, both these phones are not as good as SGS2 and N8 but they are capable of taking excellent pics. Picture and video taking is an art. Give mid range nokia 5233 in the hand of a person who understands how to take good pictures using that sensor and he will take better pictures with that than average dude using N8.

Want to see what HD2 sensor is really capable of doing?

Check this out :

Please watch this in 720P

This entire video is shot using HD2. A phone which by default does not have 720P recording functionality. But hardware is perfectly capable. This is same phone which gsmarena bashes as having very poor video recording capabilities and strictly mid range snapper. and they are right, but to an extent only. Stock phone sucks at taking photos and videos, but its hardware does not suck as badly.

So is this (though this is shot at 360P only).

Same is the case with N8. Its hardware is top notch, sadly its stuck on symbian with not much developer support unlike Android or WM 6.x phones like HD2.

Hardware will go only as far as software will allow it to go.

Just widen your horizon and really see what is the possibilities of the hardware and you will see why I mentioned HTC phones there.

Ok, found the saved pictures from one of the threads at XDA.

Here is untouched indoor pic set submitted by another user with his N8 and his SGS2 (this was with old camera firmware on SGS2 which has since then been upgraded to fix the sharpness bug, but that shouldnt be a problem with these pictures as it mainly affected the outdoor pictures more than indoor on SGS2)

You can check the metadata of all images to confirm they are untouched.

If the OP likes nokia design and wants a future based phone, the new WP7 series of nokia are the way to go. Nokia N8 is still a super good phone and don't know why, but even after having android, i sometimes miss the symbian platform. All the best with your choice.

@rtkomar

Shripad is a senior member with vast knowledge so you should respect his opinions.

Even I laughed at his previous post but after thinking about it for few mins, I understood what might be the reason behind his POV. And it is clearly explained in the following portion of his post

Coming to HTC, dude, you need to follow developer community. Look whats going on with HD2 and latest ports and then head to youtube and check out what its sensor can actually do. It still is one very good camera sensors to take pics and videos. First of all, photography is art...so if you compare two photos taken by 2 completely different people, the results might be shockingly different.

Second, if hack/custom software by dev community enhances the default functionalty, you cannot compare that to factory settings of another device. Sometimes dev community is able to exploit the hardware to its full capacity and that can change the results altogether.

And Shripad owns the phones he is taking about. I can't beat that with my experiences of few hours/days with friend's

I was wondering when someone will come along totally unwilling to accept N8 camera is not perfect.

Okay, Lets be rational now. I am not a fanboy of any brand nor I am saying N8 is the best you can get because I have it. Lets think together and decide.

First of all, I never said N8 camera is perfect
<
. Of course it is not, nothing is. And as for your Symbian doesn't have much developer support and Android and WP7 have better support comment, I agree completely. But if you are taking that in defence to say HD2 is good, I still disagree. Just as an example, I hope you can see the annoying pink cast in HD2 videos above. It is much more pronounced in the middle. And if you are saying some developers have made HD2 cam better, so it is for N8, you can make it much better.

I agree that N8 loses details due to compression and it should have compressed the photos less for even better quality. But as a matter of fact, even by compressing so much, it produces better images than all the current phones.

Lets start by looking at the real world performance you need. I will give just one example and you can check the rest of the photos yourself.

Look at the originals found in the links below. I have just cropped the image have written the camera names, nothing else and if you have any doubt, you can crop it yourself and check.

http://www.gsmarena....eview-523p6.php

http://www.gsmarena....eview-597p9.php

Now here is the 100% crop from both phones.

ns4z.jpg

So do you think that GS2 is resolving more details? Check other Real World photos from the link above.

Now lets see the crops of photos you have shared in the post. Again I have just cropped them and have added names, nothing else.

1. N8 ISO High vs GS2 ISO 400

Exif data : N8 - Shutter 1/67s ISO 799 ; GS2 - Shutter 1/58s ISO 400

ns1q.jpg

Do you still think that GS2 is resolving more details? Just look at the remote controls, thats enough. And N8 is giving such a great output at ISO 800 while GS2 is struggling at 400!

Now lets move onto the other photos and I will explain you what is the problem and why am I looking at Shutter speed and ISO.

2. N8 ISO 100 vs GS2 ISO

N8 - Shutter 1/15s ISO 100 ; GS2 - Shutter 1/19s ISO 100

ns3ks.jpg

3. N8 ISO Auto vs GS2 ISO Auto

N8 - Shutter 1/17s ISO 174 ; GS2 - Shutter 1/17s ISO 125

ns2t.jpg

Now suddenly GS2 looks better in 2 and 3 right? Actually, No! Read below.

We all know that higher ISO means more noise because it is digital munipulation, not by the hardware. GS2 photos agree too. But wait, N8 is taking worse photos at ISO 100 and 125 than at ISO 799! Something smells fishy right? Yes, there is a problem, its not the camera, but us. This is where shutter speed comes into picture.

As you might be knowing, N8 has dedicated Camera Button, while GS2 doesn't.

Now, when shutter speeds become slower than 1/20s, our hadshake will be blurring the photo a bit. Now, since N8 has Two way camera button, if you try taking photo with shutter speeds less than 1/20, there will be inevitable blur in the photo, because your hands wont be stand still when you try to press the button (and sadly it is a bit stiff). You have to master it.

Now, GS2 doesn't have this problem because you take photo by touching the screen and not by pressing a button. Capacitive screens are so sensitive that you dont need to press anything and you wont shake the phone by touching its screen.

So please dont pass judgement by just looking at two photos, consider how they were taken and why a way better specified camera is behaving like this. If you want to be sure, fix both cameras to a tripod, and take the photos else keep self timer at 2s and hold the camera steady in your hand. If then GS2 takes better photos than N8, I will apologise for spreading the wrong information.

I know this because even I had faced this problem while low light shooting in the beginning and I practised. Now I dont face any of the problems the above user had while shooting at low shutter speeds. You have to practice not to shake your hands while clicking N8's camera button when shutter speed is below 1/30s. If you master, there is nothing like it. And if you are in no mood to forgive N8 for its camera button during low shutter speed photography, you may consider this as a con.

So its not N8's sensor or hardware limitation or high JPEG compression, its user's problem. We have to know how to use it during low light condition. A simple workaround which the awesome sensor of N8 gives you is cranking up ISO. As you can see in 1, even at ISO 800, it is retaining so much detail and giving such a good photo with low chroma noise which even many of the mid range point and shoot digital cameras fail to give.

You can check the web for more shootouts and if anybody with N8 has complained about bad output at low light condition, tell them to crank up ISO or use a tripod or use self timer and dont shake the phone. Here are some shootout links for your reference which I could find by googling.

As for the XDA thread, I am not saying N8 doesnt have any problem at all. Some cameras will have unit specific issues and you can find such posts complaining about GS2 camera too.

As for your Engadget comment, they are a blog trying to get more clicks and hence more money by advertising. You can always see a bias in their blog nowadays so that more users come and raise their voice and complain. You can check the post below and clearly see that nobody could take such bad photos from N8. When comments started pouring in (even I had posted a comment), they just updated that their N8 camera had an issue. Couldn't they see it clearly before posting? It is all business.

http://www.engadget....-ii-nokia-n8-a/

AOL, parent company of Engadget brought some insane rules to increase web clicks and because of that many of the good Engadget Editors left it and have started a site called http://www.theverge.com/ It is very good. Check it.

No doubt, GS2 camera is on of the great 8MP cameras out there but its definitely not better than N8. And of course, N8 is not perfect, its camera interface is bad, Shutter button is con for slow shutter speeds, its JPEG copmression could have been better. But even with those cons, it beats all the phones hands down. And I am talking about most of the scenarios here. There will be some conditions where other phones will take better photos. But definitely not overall.

If anybody still finds that GS2 camera is better than N8's, I rest my case.

@rtkomar

Of course he is a senior member and I respect his opinions. I agreed about clunky symbian and bad developer support and bad camera interface of N8.

But that doesnt mean everything he is saying is right. I too own the phone and I can assure you, the problem people are finding during low light photography is just because of the stiff camera button and slow shutter speeds. It gets blurred. So better crank up the ISO and take photos at high shutter speed.

I forgot to add the 4th image of N8 ISO Medium vs GS2 ISO 200 Image. Here shutter speed is faster than 1/30s and you can see that GS2 is trying to increase the brightness and losing details. N8 looks much more natural and it resolves much more details.

4. N8 ISO Medium vs GS2 ISO 200

N8 - Shutter 1/36s ISO 398 ; GS2 - Shutter 1/28s ISO 200

Nice discussion with good points from both the members
<
Now #dhruvrock2000 where are you, we need your inputs on this debate as you have both the N8 as well as SGS2 and i guess even some HTC phones.

#RS4 Here now.. What input do you need from me
<
I can see there is some sort of debate going on here regarding the camera quality ? The N8 still wins that hands down lol

You guys might want to take a look at this blog post to see a rather excellent camera comparison between the N8 , SGS2 and the iPhone 4S

been using the n8 fro quite some time now...the one drawback that i observed was that the proximity sensor doesn't work that great when using the phone on the left ear. The call gets disconnected a lot many times when holding the phone to the left ear in a conversation. I might be wrong`; my holding position might be wrong or my phone might have a fault, others can confirm this.
