ok guys need some help here.

I work for a small company in Bangalore. The work is exciting and something that i really like and work includes foreign travel to south america and East Asia for short periods of time. I was in Seattle on an assignment recently and applied at MS , Redmond just to try my luck.. It so happened that they forwarded the CV to India and when i came back ... MS India interviewed me and i got a job. The profile at MS is in the my area of expertise but would any work at MSIT be exciting ? anyone who works/used to work at MS here?

MSIT meaning system administration or any "projects" like implementing stuff? Or did you mean MGSI ???

MS could be a great place to work depending on the role, MSIT might be boring grunt work answering stupid luser calls to fix their computers coz they crashed it again (what Windows is best known for) ahaha.

If its MGSI type role where they could again send you on projects where you actually implement/architect stuff then sure ... ENJOY!

Imagine all the latest shite you could play with... Windows 8 data center/clusters, Hyper-V, SQLServer xyz/whatever... IIS, not to mention all their apps like Office, Visual Studio team system and what not...

edit: i should add disclaimer that i have not worked in hyderabad and have not really exact clue about the place though, so wait for other inputs before you hop on that flight to hyd...

Ask MSIT about the onsite assignment prospects and stuff since you get those in your current job? Ask about the Job description and compare it with your previous one and you should be able to make out what the new job is like.

i'm into Data Warehousing and BI so don't think I'll get support calls about computers lol

^^

If the job description is to your liking and work experience / skill set, with decent remuneration. Why not. Go for it. Great company to have on your CV. For sure. Also would this be a horizontal or vertical move for you..?

Thanks Darth.
The role is the the same.. Dev/Tech Lead in my current company and in MS. the job description (for the talk i've had with my potential manager at MS.
) sounded similar tech wise. I'm just wondering about kinda work MSIT does....i dont want to it end up as routine, boring work any drone can do. HR painted a rosy picture... but if its anything like Dell IT/GDC then its not going to be much.
I didn't bring up onsite assignments.

^^

I doubt anyone can really tell you that, till they do not see the specific JD. To hard to compare.

omg you open a can of worms posting that mini-microsoft blog/site here :D now NOBODY will go to MS...

i feel for your "geeky" friend, i think i know what you mean and how it all worked out for him.

working for any large corporation requires you to "toe the line" , "drink the koolaid" , "answer to your overlords" , "kiss up to your boss" and such stuff... not to mention in, say a team of 10 people, more than half are slackers/losers and the rest do all the work yet dont get paid/appraised for it.

some people thrive in such environments and are very successful, and some prefer to work in smaller more dynamic/free/transparent environments where, say, in that team of 10 people, like 9 are superstars and you dont care about that one loser unless they're a really bad apple :D

I think Chaos can give you some inputs since he was working with MS for quite some time. He was in Redmond for a while IINM and was put up at Scientia at Bangalore. PM him. :)

he was with MS hardware, which was a lot different :)

LOL I have personally went with him to pick up some consignment from the Scientia, when I visited him whilst in Mysore. :P

Congratulations Guru.

I never thought people will think for joining Microsoft. If I were you, I would have jumped in :)

All the best for your career.

MSR is a completely different place. It has no relation to MSFT.

^Are you blind? I was referring to greenhorn when I mentioned Chaos was put up at Scientia. :\
