With the intro of Likes system on TE , the reputation giving system is snailing down i guess.

Now everybody just gives Likes but least are interested in giving reputations.

So here is just a poll for the same.

Vote it and comment too.

Is reputation system dying slowly?

The System has but completely died. I don't even remember the last time I received a reputation nor do I remember giving it to someone. Besides, once you reach the maximum number of green squares does it even matter? Most senior members have already reached that level and they have stopped caring about it.

However, I absolutely love the like system. It controls making unnecessary posts to acknowledge someone's post or effort, you can express your appreciation by giving a "like" and lastly it gives the member the motivation to post quality stuff. The system is great.

If I were an Admin, I would make the Like system Public. I would have the No. of Likes displayed below the Post count so that it becomes visible to everyone. It would be a nice feature to have and members would have fun competing with each other for maximum likes. This would also increase quality content on TE.

Nice suggestion

Hmm.. good topic if this one goes for a decent discussion.

I first had the impression that the lines have blurred a tad bit after the introduction of like button.

Sadly, it proceeded to a scene where reps have totally gone rare.

Case in example being when i posted a review here, the stats reads 5 reps vs 17 likes.

I just thought maybe people find this as a convenient way or maybe the review wasnt good enough. But still, while being totally honest, 5 seemed less as compared to good old days.

Situation really seems to matter when you have people posting advice in areas where they are clueless, and only cuz their reps from old days has swelled to a great deal.. a genuine suggestion takes a backseat. Have seen people posting absolutely zilch in tech section ever since they arrived, but still their gibberish supersedes good posts.
But i still believe the like button has stopped the flow of reps for absolutely nonsensical reasons and that is good to see. Still a better situation rather than see reps being awarded for a wisecrack of a post.

^Again my point is, when that Green bar of yours is full, why should you even care? Sure, My bar reads : I am great and yours reads : You are highly famed, now as an older member I know the greenbar levels and hence I know that I have more reputation than you, but for any other person we are equally reputated. Hence, I feel it negates the purpose of acquiring more reps. If TE wants to be fair, it should have reps represent as Points instead of the green bar.

I still dont find too many faults in the current grading system, but say a total noob asks a question..and we both reply, suggesting totally different solutions.

Now only cuz your reps seems visually more convincing, your suggestion gets thumbs up instantly.. mine is second in line.

If this hypothetical situation gets the dressing up of you prolly fumbling for a solution and mine being more accurate.. noob is gonna have some choice words for TE :P

The Veterans of TE have been busy with their lives and that has effected the situation as well.

About making the like system public, it will backfire.. or atleast has the potential to.

I start posting anecdotes/jokes which have been popular among the masses, and before anybody can see it.. the likes gonna swell like anything.

'Likes' covers a broad spectrum, encompassing everything under the Sun and hence should not be taken as a way to measure quality of posts on a tech forum at the least.

Used the rep button Not too long ago. Dont maintain a log with day n time.

Some people still do rep good/worthy posts. But the number has gone down.

A question to senior members....Can your remember the day when you repped someone lately?
Honestly, I don't keep track of that (not sure if anyone else does) but the last time I repped someone was IIRC spacey for that review of the Asus O!Play mini player. :)

Giving reps to someone definitely encourages them, agreed but doesn't mean one can go about asking for it in the public, posting it in the signature ('If you like my post, then plz rep me!' types). Have noticed it a lot of times lately with the new members. Genuine posts, reviews, guides and articles deserve reps and likes. When I find them, I do hand them reps.

Although to some extent, I do agree with the introduction of the 'like' system, reps might have taken a hit.

You just pressed the Like button for the review :P

We have another reason now for reps taking a backseat. Mods can lock the thread. Game, Set and Match. Topic wins.

^Wittiness killed them.
^^ I see... I am sure they're keeping a wittiness event at the next Olympics!! And I also see a Gold Medal contender from India!! Lol :P

BTW, we already had a discussion about this in the Feedback section. It yielded no results either... Apart from Members 'demanding' Reps, that is!

I remember starting a thread on this one a couple of weeks back. Got a few 'likes' in response. No reps. I have tried on my part to distribute reps

Nobody keeps track on who reps whom, mate. You got my point anyways. I know that.

I have a slight different perspective.

if a person has alot of reps then the weight of reputation he may give also heavy.
Similarly, a high rep count MAY mean that the person is knowledgeable and/or has made efforts to earn those reps over time.
Now is it not a responsibility regarding whom to rep and for what?

There are two different things about a good post.
1. How much it is helping you or someone.
2. How much are you and/or others are learning from it.

i leave a 'Thanks/Like' for 1st and 'Rep' for the 2nd.

number of likes and thanks denote how much helpful and supportive a member is.
and number of reps denote how accurate/reputable in information/facts a member MAY be.
and i don't think either kind would want to be mistakes as the other kind.... A(not every) helpful fellow may not care about his reputation and similarly a(not every) reputed fellow may not care for whether and how much people like/hate them.

If we go around spreading reps just for the sake of keeping the system alive then it is like charity.
form a group of 10 members and keep repping each other in a manner which doesnot violate rep frequency and all you 10 members will be highly reputable in no time.. if that is how much it really matters.

One thing I would like to mention here is that the "Rep" button is not easily visible as much as the "Like" link. Me, being a fairly new-ish member to TE didn't really know about the Rep system until I got a few Rep of my own. I would even go so far as saying that if someone isn't active much on the forums, they would never even come to know that such a system exists. This would surely rob someone who genuinely deserves Reps coz the new members won't really be aware of the process of giving Reps.
