Is reputation system dying slowly?

seems like the like meter is gaining support

my suggestion to op would be to create a poll regarding like meter and then implement this new thing :)
 
^ that will be good, introduction of that will encourage the members. But i would suggest the visible like points instead of colored dots.
PS: i was expecting that in the last TE downtime

As already mentioned before it would encourage many members to post quality stuffs so that their profile's worth increases

dont know about the visible like points instead of coloured dots for the reputation thing, but a cardinal like meter will surely affect :)

Simple, why are the members creating these threads, because the like system is not giving them enough exposure, so i have suggested the like-meter, that will do the work ie required exposure for the members to feed on :P
 
Seriously, whose keeping track of reps? I'm sure most members have gone past the phase of expecting reps, as contributing routinely is all that matters now, reps or no reps.

The important thing is you chip in, add something of value or atleast noteworthy, on any topic under the sun and feel good about it!

Someone who does appreciate your post, will probably REP you or LIKE your post, possibly making you feel better about your contribution. :)

With reference to the Like Vs. Rep debate:

I'm sure you would agree that it is a whole lot easier and straightforward to "instantly" LIKE a member's post, to show your support and voice your agreement/appreciation! ;)

REPS on the other hand, are useful when you wish to acknowledge someone's hard work, perhaps in the form of guides and other useful resources for the benefit of all members..

Well in that case these kinda threads wouldn't exist anyways and if most of the members have gone past the phase of expecting reps why do we have it anyways. IMO only the senior members have gone that phase might be coz the bars don't increase for them but for the new members they definitely would like to see the bars increase. :)
 
to be honest, the rep system was a huge ego boost for me when I started out in TE. I was repped a lot for the stuff that I posted. I used to rep a lot of people too, but lately dont find that many insightful stuff :(
 
+1 to Greenhorn. I remember asking bikey and few other seniors on TE during my first few days on TE. How do you have such a big rep bar :rofl: .
 
1) Who cares about reps or likes. We come to TE for fun and knowledge. Where did quantifying it come into the picture?

2) In this discussion I felt that many members feel that they should be repped more often, only because there is a visible reputation bar.

3)Rather than ask why am I not being repped, ask yourself this - Did I post something worthwhile that deserves a rep?

4) Frankly, rep or like, it's all same on an online forum. You like or rep out of appreciation of a post, not because of any other reason.

5) IMO there should be one system, either rep or like. For the why, refer to point 4.

6) Lastly, if a post helps someone, then it should fall upon the beneficiary to hand out a rep to the poster who took time out for him/her. Or like, but not both.

One funny thing I'd like to post.

I have had 4 bars since the last 6-10 reputation points I have received. I don't understand, is it a bug? or am I cursed?

Your last rep points seems to have received from members having least rep power.

I guess you have 400+ rep points right now. Every 100 rep points adds one green dot until you reach some 500 points. A glow like green dot (6th one) appears when you get 500+ rep points, afterwards every 200 points received enables one glow green dot..:)
 
I still don't understand the point. 5-10 people can come together and start a repping syndicate of sorts!!

So, why bother with the reps in the first place. If you find the post useful, thank the member or like the post and be done with it. Why fuss over reps??

And if the members post only for the sake of or with the hope of getting reps, there is no way you can 'make' sumone rep you! Yes, 'demanding' reps is an altogether different thing! :P

I think 'like' is better than 'reps'... A post that is liked by a lot of people clearly shows the consensus that the post is good/useful/accurate and helps everyone. Reps don't indicate this on a per post basis. A person with high reps can post wrong information and another will look at his reps and act on his advice!! :lol:

Like many members, I also used to ask for reps when I joined this forum. Do you believe, I asked one question like "When will I become admin?" on another board when I just started using forum (Around 8 years back). It was my silly mind who made me asking this question. I was thinking, If I complete 100 posts stage, I'll become senior member. If I complete 500, I'll become advanced user, then if I complete 1500 posts stage, I'll become ADMIN :bleh: That was totally lame.

When I joined TE, I first looked for reputation bar to increase because that was looking good :) I asked few peoples to distribute some reps :P (In very early stage, please don't ban me :P). Now, it's over 4-5 months after I've received the last rep. It doesn't matter for me now. Neither I give, nor I receive. I like the "LIKE" system a lot though. :D

I have explained this a couple of times before and still it comes up.

So here goes.

i) You can rep only 'n' no of times in a particular time period.

ii) Once you rep a person you cant rep him back unless you rep 10-12 person.

ii) Most importantly the no. of points you can rep another person with is only ~1%-2% of the points you have.

For eg., if someone has '0' points then if you rep someone else they will get only '0' points. If you have ~50 points then only the person you rep will get '1' point. So work out yourselves how long it would take to take out a coup like that.

In the same way a gang of 10 can also like each and every post among their own gang and the like bar can increase by 100's in a day which is impossible in the rep system
 
It's quite obvious that liking a post is far easier than repping it...so why can't these dots depend upon likes rather than reps?

in other words remove the repp system & move solely on like system....100 like points=1 dot (1 like point if the liker has got 2 dots with him...3 if he's got 6 dots and so on)?

why not do the same as in rep system?

and all of them can't have 2 dots with them because it will take something to post appreciable content here and whoever does that won't be interested in joining such gangs and even if he is, it will take hell lot of time to increase his friends points 1+1+1........he'll be easily caught by the mods as well :P
