Is reputation system dying slowly?

Ok, let me put it this way... I never once did ask for reps for any of my contributions here. It was all out of appreciation, where I was only going about my own business, reading and sharing stuff.

In short, I wasn't really paying attention to the rep bar increasing nor was I alarmed when it stopped. :P

You make it sound like a "mission objective", rather than an entity that shows how helpful you've been to the community. :)

Neither did most of the other fellow members over here ask for reps.

I get to see most of the reputed members don't bother about reps. They why not just remove it?. If it has to stay, why is it so??..that would answer the question why newbies/rep seekers care for reps. As simple as that.

Why not have an option to disable the rep meter for people who don't care about reps?. That would bring out who doesn't actually '"care" about the reps being displayed ;)

Rep bar is intended to be a global score. Indicates how helpful a user has been in general across the board.

Likes is thread-specific. Indicates how helpful a user is for that thread.

Once you understand this distinction, you will find the systems complement each other.

Making a 'like bar' again makes it a global score like the rep bar and introduces its pitfalls.

I agree reps have seen a slow down. I also proposed (a fraction) of reps being added for each like, to the admins. But yes there's a problem that likes from GT might influence it in that case. Maybe the likes from GT can be isolated, but the admins haven't had time to look at this suggestion yet.

if not a like bar, then a like count maybe?

and adding to reputation for a number of likes may not be really worth it, unless you intend to bar GT section from it...

If i remember correctly, Like was introduced to avoid +1 etc kind of posts..

a member can just click on like count in the OP to see which reply was the most liked.. making it easy to read through the richer content of the thread... which indeed is very helpful..

so unless mods are willing to verify these posts manually and convert them to some amount of rep then that would be widely accepted by members..

The above task can be further simplified for member (although opposite for admin :P) by adding a Thanks button too. Converting amount of Thanks into reps may be good as people would be thankful to help and efforts only unlike like :P

For now Like represents a lot of things and not all of those things are worthy of reps; not from a technical POV that is. And if we are excluding Technical POV from this then it completely defies the purpose of barring GT section of reps..

Alternatively,

draw a line between what to rep and what to like.

No pt yaar..

Why would the count be even displayed which might be due to a wisecrack comment or a silly joke ?

One tongue in cheek comment of mine attracted 21 likes. A review on the other hand only mustered 17.. If this was between two members, who wd have won the contest ?

*Sigh* ... You still don't get the difference between Likes and Reps, do you?

Here are my final suggestions :

1. Keep both the systems intact. They are perfect in their present form.

2. Make the Rep button larger and more prominent. Maybe add a tagline to it : "If You found this post useful, add to the users reputation". This will be helpful to the new members who don't know much about the reputation system.

3. In case you didn't know, the Like count is already visible in every member's profile so what is the harm in making it more prominent? Make it more prominent by adding it next to the post count so that it is visible in every post. The benefits of doing this are highlighted in a lot of pro-likes posts here.

4. And last but not the least, change yourself first to bring change around yourself. Start taking responsibility and start repping a rep-worthy post instead of cribbing about the system here. Seriously, how hard is it to tap a few extra buttons to rep someone? :|

Agree with everything except point 3.

The only people here in support for a visible like count, do not justify its usefulness except to state that its another bar/stat to flaunt and gives more exposure. Exposure for what?! Your likes for a post is publicly displayed in the thread where you made the post. Why should it matter beyond that?

If this has to be done, the rep system becomes redundant and would have to be removed, and we would need to disable likes in non-tech sections.

To be honest, neither the rep nor the likes matter much. Most of the times, a check on your joining date against your post count itself speaks on your behalf.

you came into this forum with no reps , you will leave with no reps :P. taken blatantly from the gita ....seriously whats the point :?

people who dont take gita seriously may not take this either..

:P

sab maya hai...

point is , maya sounds more tempting and gita sounds too fat..

ok good night :P

I "like" a post when I find it funny or wise. I "rep" a post when I see that hard work has gone into compiling and creating it.

Nicely Done.

There is a reason why the Like count is displayed in the profile and not on the posts. Like button has been used for so many reasons, to be advocating its count be displayed in the form of bars/counts akin to rep bars is silly. The only place where it actually is useful on a site like this is when the button is used to show solidarity for a point made, the +1 equivalent.

Current system is fine, but rep button should be explained or arrangements should be made for making it more prominent so that it doesnt goes unnoticed, esp for the uninitiated.

I'm also in favour of expiration for reps. But I would suggest that the green bars turn grey rather than disappear completely, so that it would still indicate the max rep a person has achieved.

It would also be a kind of measure of active-ness in the forums, lesser number of grey bars = more the activeness. Comments?
What's wrong with this suggestion if someone could explain me? This takes care of all problems IMHO.
