My sister wants to pursue a degree in arts and I've heard a lot about this college. I called them up but the guy answering the phone was a bit vague and said that I will get all the info I need when I buy the brochure they release nearing end of April. :S

Can someone from Mumbai (not compulsory :) ) give me more info on how the college is, admission process, placements. Anything and everything related to the BFA course.

It's quite urgent, don't want to delay. Thanks!

^ Thanks for the link. Sorry if the question is noobish, but can someone tell me the placement scene in this college? What are the future opportunities etc.

your sis wants to do arts or a fine arts course as JJ college is known for its fine arts course and its different from the arts stream in regular colleges.

not sure about nowadays but back in the day, this was one of the best colleges in mumbai for fine arts. my uncle is an alumni from there and their alumni is who's who of arts & entertainment industry.

JJ is a reputed art school in India. So don't worry about placement. They give chance to do work with multinantional companies & agencies. But main thing is wheather your sister is really interested in art flied. Bcz there are very few guys they can crack JJ's CET. She should best in art. It's not so easy to take admission in JJ art school. If you trying some unlegal route then your wasting your money. Bcz they guys took lot's of money & they didn't give you admission garranty. If she is best then she will defentaly crack CET.

Best of luck.

JJ is one of the oldest and most reputed colleges, i guess it would be one of the best college's to study fine art/architecture even today....was revered when we studied in architecture college!...the JJ guys were hysterical when we called their college JJ-they used to keep correcting us-"its Sir JJ"..haha OT I know!!!!;P

If you are a maharshtrian then your sister has a good shot at JJ. It is no doubt a good college for pursuing BFA, but right now the best place to do BFA or anything related to design is NID, Ahmedabad. The next best place being College of Arts, Delhi. All these places have their own screening exams.

Wait for their prospectus to come out and then do the needful.

JJ accepts only maharshtrian students while NID and DCA accept students from all over India. Art and design require a lot of dedication and your sister needs to be mentally prepare for that. There is cut throat competition in the art field as not everyone makes it big.

^ She did her 10th and 12th here. Or do you mean Maharashtrian as in surname? (She is not, that is why I'm asking.. obviously :P). Nothing mentioned here.

No it's not being maharashtrian by surname, but by your schooling. Sei you sister should be fine and you should go ahead and tell her to start preparing for the tests.

Maharashtrian means 1) born in maharashtra or 2) have a a domicile certificate which shows that you have spent atleast 15 years in Maharashtra , if Im not mistaken.

Alright, thanks a lot man! Will start the process for getting the prospectus.

@All: Thank you for your replies! :)

Well, a few years ago - about 8-9 yrs back - when I'd tried for JJ, the scene basically was that the a lot of the seats were reserved for some or the other category. So that left only a few seats for the open category. I guess that's what someone meant by the 'Marathi Manoos' statement. i.e. If you happen to fall into any of the reserved categories, then it'll be much easier.

Also, be very serious about the entrance test, because of the reason stated above. There is a particular format for the test, i.e. still life, then something else etc. [Can't remember exactly]. So be sure to practice accordingly. In fact, people are known to take classes specially for the test. & generally, folks practice for a couple of years before attempting the test. IIRC, there's a restriction on when you can make the next attempt, should you not clear the 1st time around. So try to get info on that.

Also, someone mentioned entry through malafide means. There were murmurs that the entire process is just an eyewash & that the results are rigged, even back then. One can't really say whether there's any truth to this, cos of the quota system. i.e. I saw people whose skill level was just about average get through, while others with above average skills didn't make it. But whether those lucky few were picked cos of some quota can't be known. So try and speak to some students there and see what their take is, if possible.

And has your sister decided between fine arts, & commercial arts, architecture, sculpting etc.? She'll have to pick one at the outset.

Of course, all I've blabbed about is what was the case around 8-9 years back. I don't know whether the same holds true now. So just try and get the info afresh & only then discuss things with your sis.

All the best!

What was true 8-9 years back, still holds true. It was the same situation 3 years back when my sister tried for it. She eventually got College of Arts, Delhi and she has never looked back, but she was also very frustrated about the situation then.

Last year my cousin sister also tried for JJ College of Arts and faced the same issues. Again, she too got admission into College of Arts, Delhi. She had similar observations about rampant (mis)use of the quota system and preferential treatment being meted out to different people.

@OP

Why limit yourself to just JJ College of Arts? Like I said before, the best place for design and creation is National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. College of Arts, Delhi also accepts students from all over the country and your sister will definitely have a better chance of getting admission into those places than JJ.

Also keep in mind what kidrow said above. There are serious preparatory classes for each of these places and people attend those for 6 months to 1 year before they think they are ready for the exams, which are highly competitive and graded subjectively rather than objectively.
