Forerunner
I purchased a BSNL EVDO card today for 4200/- (card price) and 650/- per month for unlimited usage.

Just checked my speeds and it is,

I was expecting a lot more though :(

Want to know if anybody has any idea about the following:

1. Is National Roaming activated by default or you need to ask for it?

2. Is device re-programming necessary or something to improve speeds?

3. How to get the preferred and alternate DNS servers for your city?

4. Any other tips to improve speed?

Do share your experiences and tips/suggestions.

1. AFAIK, roaming is preactivated in all new connections. You must check with your local BSNL office. Have you received a 10-digit number for your connection, or is it a 7 digit number..?

2. Speeds largely depend on proper network coverage and distance from the EVDO tower. No re-programming necessary. Just make sure that you are getting a good signal strength. Check at different places in your house itself. Use an USB extension cable to leave the device on the window sill.

3. No idea.

4. Head over to the various forums exclusively meant for BSNL EVDO. You'll get lots of promising tips. However, most of these rarely work. :P

Enjoy! It is portable that's the best part otherwise wireless connection imo is useless for home usage except for laptops owners.

^^ And why is that..? I'm surviving for the past 6 months solely on EVDO unlimited connection. Am getting speeds consistently over 1Mbps with monthly charges of just Rs.850 (650 + 200 rent). No other broadband connection can match that.

^^ Ideally, upto 2.4Mbps (to be upgraded to upto 3.1Mbps with a new device shortly) speeds. :) There are people in Bangalore who receive speeds of 1.7 to 1.8Mbps consistently.

Thanks for the help HP. Will be going to the exchange today and confirm about roaming.

@Rockfella

EVDO is there in Gurgaon from what I know. I got this connection in Raipur today and I am hoping it will work in roaming in Gurgaon.

Thanks will check availibility here... i am skeptical about BSNl because once the service is down they dont give a damn about customers! Is that true? Airtel's ass is good, BSNL is gov based so u know.... :S

^How come you got it for the old rates of Rs 650pm?

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. Shows the monthly rental for unlimited as Rs 999.

Lucky lad!

No idea. They gave it for 650/- to me and I also mentioned 650/- on the plan box in the form.

Update: Just came back from the BSNL exchange. The guy here looked confused but was better than most others. He told me that roaming is automatic on these numbers and the roaming profile is programmed on the card by default. He also confirmed that it will work in Gurgaon. I will actually find this out for myself when I move to Gurgaon in two days. Also, he said we don't need to do any DNS settings on the card :S

However, other forums for the BSNL EVDO suggest some DNS servers. And they also suggest some re-programming for the card. I am not going to try any stunts right now and I will wait to check its performance in Gurgaon before attempting anything.

gud luck... keep me updated. is there any number that i can call and inquire about evdo charges in gurgn :P

I get pretty good speeds on Photon+ but this thing is largely dependent on the area and distance from the EVDO tower. On airport i get 3.1mbit easily on photon+ and at home, i get 1mbit average

@Rockfella

Don't have any Gurgaon Customer Care number right now. Will let you know if I find out any. Check the BSNL Haryana site. Maybe you will find something.

@varkey: The revised tariff has been put on hold as of now. It is very much possible that the tariff would be revised in the immediate future, but rumours are that this revision would be done along with the upgrade to Rev A technology which can provide speeds upto 3.1Mbps.

@Mohit: Did you get a 10 digit number (9xxxx xxxxx) for your connection..?

1Mbps unlimited for 650 is damn good only problem is EVDO speed highly varies from place to place.
BTW please tell it gives shared ip right ? what difference does shared ip makes ?

Done.

Speed fluctuations is a big problem as nothing is garenteed and bsnl is not the best when it comes to after sales :(
