KDE 4 discussion thread
A meta thread to track discussions/updates for the KDE 4.x series.

To start off we have the 4.2 thread: http://www.techenclave.com/open-source-and-linux/rock-on-with-kde-4-2-a-122317.html

Now there is news that KDE 4.3 Beta 1 is released: K Desktop Environment - KDE 4.3 Beta 1 Release Announcement

I will most likely try the "KDE Four Live" live CD mentioned here: K Desktop Environment - KDE 4.2.85 Info Page the link is "KDE Four Live" CD

KDE 4.3 release schedule: Schedules/KDE4/4.3 Release Schedule - KDE TechBase

KDE 4.3 feature plan: Schedules/KDE4/4.3 Feature Plan - KDE TechBase

Thanks :) couldn't create the thread as was a bit busy with burning thing you know :p

The best place to track almost all KDE development is Planet KDE

The only 2 things I am waiting for is Amarok 2.1.0 and K3b 2.0 :p Will download the live cd when Beta 2 is out :)

Yes, I only recently added planet KDE dont know why I didnt do it before - I only had the kdedevelopers blogs in my list...

Downloading the "KDE Four Live" image to try 4.3 beta!

Bah, waited 4 hrs for the "KDE Four Live" test ISO to download and it doesn't even have the new Air theme for Plasma! I hope it doesn't need desktop effects to be visible.... that was the main thing I wanted to check out...

Check out (I think these were posted before) :

edit: ok had to add some unstable/factory/community opensuse repo and install the plasma-theme-air package but its just the plasma theme (panel, widgets), i dont see air window decorations/style etc...

In KDE 4.3 you can right-click the main menu (kickoff) and pick an icon, so now I can change the default KDE to Kubuntu's "circle of friends" (CoF) icon. Downloaded the "bling" SVG official logo from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KubuntuArtwork and edited it in Inkscape to get just the CoF part. Since SVG is just an XML file simply deleted the section with the kubuntu wording and left the circle logo in it :)

Also, from Undefined Fire :: Noteworthy KWin commits since 4.2.0 they've fixed the flicker during login due to desktop effects self-check which is now only done when you actually change settings in the system settings applet: Revision 923842

Do self-check immediatelly during compositing setup only when it’s not KWin startup at the same time (in other words, only when activating compositing using the kcm). Currently selfcheck causes bad flicker (due to X mapping the overlay window for too long?) which looks bad during KDE startup. With this patch, KDE startup is without any flicker.

I think I should try for kde-4.3 sometime soon :)
PS: had they fixed the stability issues with kde-4 with 4.3? :D

KDEmod 4.2 on arch crashed only twice for me in about 4 months.
I guess 4.3 must be more stable.
