3 years is a pretty long time. I would suggest Deus Ex Machina to buy the Acer.
The things that pom99 mentioned, it did not happen because he used the laptop to do something more than use MS Office. The same things would have happened even if he had used it to edit Office files and surf internet only.
I mean he will have to turn on the laptop if he wants to surf the internet or watch a movie

So the power button has to be pressed any way.
A lot of people have had problems with their DVD drives. My brother's Lenovo laptop's combo drive stopped working within the warranty period. When he took it to the service centre, it started to work again even before the service guys had laid a hand on it. But after some 3 months, it failed again. The warranty period was over by that time. Now a days the drive works some times and some times it does not.
The Acer Aspire 5738 has the best battery life and great keyboard and a great price too. Just take an extended warranty option just in case some part stops working after the warranty period is over.
Off Topic : @Deus Ex Machina I think you owned the Zenith Director Plus Ultra. What happened to it?
EDIT: It seems that the OP has already bought the laptop. I replied after reading the first page only. :ashamed:
