LCD + TV Tuner + STB

For a USB tuner you need a CPU too , external TV tuners eliminate that and connect directly to the screen

Are the signals we get from the RCA and RF out of the STB's analog or digital or is the RCA == digital and RF == analog signal? or something else altogether?

well only the signal via DVI and HDMI are digital, signal from R.F,composite,S-video,component,VGA(D-SUB) are all analog.

Ok. So then I should be looking for an Analog external TV tuner?
How can we determine if the TV tuner would require a PC or not (i.e. only LCD monitor)?

Thanks for all the help. Am off to hunt for some TV tuners now (the TV tuner sites do not seem to provide all info regarding the Tuner specifications or maybe I don't know enough to understand :))?

well if u go for aver media dvi9 u can connect any STB ,since it has composite and component input ,RF,Svidoe which the aver media then outputs via its DVI out.the aver media has the important image processing tech like comb filter,De-Interlacer(big tv out puts a interlaced signnal)3:2/ 2: 2 Pull-Down etc so get the aver media DVI box 9 u check the below link
AVerTV DVI Box9 TV Tuner Card - M099 by: AverMedia - TechShop.in - Buy

if u dont mind the lack of component input then u can go for the cheaper avermedia genie
AverMedia Aver LCD TV Box GenieTV Tuner Card - M075 by: AverMedia -

Well, both these seem to be rather costly for me to get right now :(

Anyway the first one seems to have DVI out which is good but the cost of 8.4K is disheartening :(
Also if I am getting a STB wouldn't it be a waste as these dont have component out?

Hey guys, sorry for the hijack :P

But I have a similar issue, I have setup a HTPC, which is connected to my 32" LCD. I want to use my HTPC for recording live TV, pause and all that :P with Vista Media Centre (VMC).

So I need a USB based tuner with a IR blaster. Any recommendations?

PS: Any news about HD channels yet? They were supposed to come last year! Still no news :(

well even if u get a STB how will u connect it to the LCD u will have to buy a tv tuner,if ur STB has a composite out or component both are analog ,so u will need to convert it to digital and secondly avermedia dvi 9 is required by u since AFAIK the dell doesnt have a vga input ,and the image processing that is there in avermedia is realy good.

well u can either go for the USB based one or a internal one leadtek ,pinnacle as some good products check which one is compatable with ur VMC.

about HD channel well many channels are waiting permission from the government so blame ur governemnt they first will give permission only to DD just like 3g was given to bsnl, mtnl.
u could however get a HD STB and get the FTA channels ,HD stb will have to be sourced from abroad or possible via grey .

Yup I have to get one, but looking for cheaper options right now due to budget constraints. :(
BTW the DELL 2209WA has both DVI and VGA inputs. So I guess I could get by with a el-cheapo one for now (and maybe the dvi9 later). Any suggestions?

well in that case atleast get the aver media genie since DVI D and vga wont make that much of a difference, but a good tv tuner even in vga will make a huge difference so i suggest u get atleast the avermedia genie.
but if do want some el cheap options zebronics, tech com are available shoule be less then 1500.

Does anyone know the shops in Chennai (or Bangalore) which is an authorized dealer for AverMedia TV tuner cards.

Am planning to have a look this weekend.

TIA

I bought Techcom LCD tuner SSD-723 whichis external &works with newly bought Samsung 2233 LCD monitor without the need of computer, the tuner connects to tata sky using 2 types of cable.

1. RF cable (coaxial single cable which carry A/V)

2. Composite 3 pin (yellow/red/white) for this I had to purchase a connector Rs 15/- so I connect audio (red & white) to audio in on the tuner

3. 3rd possibility is buy composite 3 pin to Svideo cable Rs 120/- that is better & does not need separate converter as I mentioned in no. 2

I then take audio out to my creative speakers & get surround sound effect, but only few selected channels are having that effect not all, many movies have that effect on star movies/zee studio/HBO/AXN

I can connect the same tuner to direct cable transmission too but that quality is not so good as I get with tatasky, My cablewala gave me the Citycable STB too but its quality is not as good as tatasky so finally I am going to have another tatasky in all my rooms.

Was wondering if there would be a significant difference in the channel picture quality from the STB if the external TV tuner has only VGA compared to DVI out?

well i coudnt barely notice the difference b/w dvi and vga in gaming and HD let alone SD content which most if not all DTH,cable providers have the content heavily compressed and doesnt even match DVD quality.so i dont think u will notice the difference.

well since u will have to buy a STB and a Tv tuner card assuming a good tv tuner card the total for stb somwhere about 1.5k to 2k and for the tv tuner anywhere b/w 1.5k to 8k ,why not just buy SUN HD DTH i belive it has a HDMI out.

IIRC sun HD DTH costs around 10K which is too high.

My budget for the TV tuner is 3K and thinking of getting connection from the local cablewalla (180/- for all channels) STB with installation is around 800/- :)
Just worried about the pic quality though.
