I had a dual booting [GRUB Loader] with Vista and the earlier version of Ubuntu which was working perfectly fine. After a manual updation with the package manager to download the latest version [which seems to have done everthing right before the restart] Ubuntu is not booting at all. It gets stuck with the Ubuntu Splash Screen with the loading bar not moving at all. Im a complete noob, but loved Ubuntu and would like to use it again. Help me please

Try booting in safe mode , if doesn't work . .try adding noapci, nolapic and apci=off by pressing F4 from Boot menu..

If that doesn't work report again. .Btw try Mandriva :p

in the boot menu, if you highlight the ubuntu entry and press E then remove "quiet nosplash" from the end of the line then press enter to boot, it should show text bootup with the place where it's hanging...

Oh that must be the failsafe option. I wonder if your upgrade got you the latest "alpha" of 9.04 :D

btw, when you said "it gets stuck at splash loading bar"... how long did you wait? sometimes a filesystem check is in progress and it "hangs" for some time then continues...

if you are able to boot into an older kernel, try running another update :)

Ok I actually didn't understand what Dark Star meant. The screen actually got stuck and I waited for 35 mins the 1st time and 20 mins the second time before I posted this thread. But when I went back to the GRUB loader menu and selected the linux booting option it worked like a charm. :)

BTW, I have a problem in getting the compiz fusion to work with my ATIX1300 graphics card. It simply doesn't work in spite of trying all the tutorials available in the net. Can you help me with this?

Are you saying your new version of Ubuntu is working for you now???

For compiz effects, if you go to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers, does it show you an option to download and install ATI driver? If so install it and restart.

Then go into System->Preferences->Appearance and check the "Visual Effects" tab to see if you can enable Normal or Extra settings...

Yes it is working now, although I feel that this version is slightly sluggish. Will try with what you have told me for compiz effects.

You said you are using Hardy heron i.e Ubuntu 8.04.x .. Now the same version uses Linux Kernel 2.6.24.x while the output is

Code:
Linux karthick-desktop [B]2.6.22-14-[/B]generic #1 SMP Tue Dec 18 08:02:57 UTC 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Apart from that you can try Mandriva , it detects cards and display better than any OS out there.. Also MDV i686/32bit version support 4gigs ram , none other distro in 32bit does that .. You will be at ease on MDV at your side ..

Check review http://www.techenclave.com/reviews-and-previews/mandriva-linux-2009-0-review-mixed-121553.html

Dowload : Download | Mandriva Download the One Gnome [recommended] or kde edition //

Edit : Check the SS of 323bit Mandriva Free Gnome, not using KDE 4 cause its current system monitor is pathetic and don't even display the amount of ram ! has to file a bug though :P

Darkstar, I'll actually pretend to understand what you are talking about :) Now I'm willing to try any linux version. But since my setup has the Ubuntu already installed, will the mandriva version overwrite the linux installation, and what changes do I have to make in the GRUB loader? Currently I have made a 15gb partition in my c drive using the inbuilt Vista Disk Management and then installed Ubuntu. How do I go about this?

your upgrade went haywire? I had long back upgraded my hardy to Intrepid via apt.it was smooth.

there is no use in distro hopping.if you fix the small issue in your current distro ,you can learn more about GNU/Linux through this way.

as somebody suggested ,when in grub menu ,select the line to fall into "ubuntu".then press "e" and go to 2nd line and again press "e" and go to the end of the line - remove "quiet splash" words.then press "ENTER".then press "b" in keyboard to proceed to boot.this way ,you can see what went wrong.if it is a kernel panic ,there is something more than this.

Good Luck!

It's working now without me doing anything at all. As far as Distro hopping is concerned since Dark Star was recommending Mandriva and since Im also having a lot of trouble getting the compiz fusion to work wanted to try some other distro which supports this with my graphics card.

Yes just overwrite Ubuntu installation with MDV..

No changes to grub required, MDV has better tools than Ubuntu

Didn't understand the 3rd part thoug :P
