which one to go for if both are available at SAME price point, both with local warranty

both 512mb versions

My smps : vx450 (any problems ?)

Proc ; E6600 : 2.4ghz ( bottleneck? )

no to both questions.but the 4870 would be better if you can spare the cash for it.

9800GTX+ (8800GTS 512, 9800GTX, GTS 250) = Better cooling, silent, PhysX support, requires 2 x 6pin, 10.6" length

4850 = Slight edge when AA turned on, cards get way too hot / loudy if reference cooler.

@ LOAD 4850 power draw is on par with GTX+, but 4850 is more balanced at idle.

It goes down to personal preference. GTX+ for folding / benching / PhysX, 4850 for 2D mode power saving and better AA performance.

Mention games you play.

Currently my system is dead.. planning Modern warfare 2, basically FPS games that have Co-Op , Strategy games on LAN.. Ra3, racing : Planning nfs shift, underground 1..

You mentioned 2x 6pin connectors.. i know the convertors are there in the mkt.. but is the vx 450 apt for it ?

any cpu bottlenecks involved ?

even with 4870 ?

VX450 is enough upto 4870/260 + S775 / Phenom 2 Quad rig.

There will probably be no bottleneck If you play at high resolution on GTX+/4850, eg 1680x1050 or higher. It will probably bottleneck or just on the edge at stock 2.4GHz with 4870. Again depends on game.

Since I am almost sailing the same boat, I hope I am not hijacking this thread. My config currently reads:

i5 - 750 (@Stock no plans to OC)
P7P55D-Deluxe
VX450
4770 - 1GB
19" Philips CRT(1280x1024)

Would prefer to run games at 1280x1024, and very occasionally at 1366x768 (Panasonic Pasma). Budget upto ~8K. Was thinking about 4870 512MB but am reconsidering looking at the i5s power draw.

4870 shud be much much better than gts 250/9800gtx+ and 4850 at any resolution.

And price diff is just too small. Why not get it as your PSu will handle it like a piece of cake.

difference is about 2.5k... and I have to keep the rig for only about 6 months on a 22" monitor... so trying to save as much as possible ;)

worth it ? ( 4870 v/s 9800gtx+ ) considering the period of use will be about 6 months ? which will give me lesser losses after that period if i decide to sell ?

my saphire 4850 is less than a week old bought from lynx for 6.8k. So far so good running games like ashes c2k9, extreme trucker at 1680x1050 max settings on phenom 4 2.3ghz, cm realpower 390w smps, viewsonic 22".
the upgrade seems to be significant for me from 8600GT.

if you want to save, go for seconds I guess someone in this forum already quoting for his card somewhere around 5k, would be a deal.

ohh... 9800gtx+ is that outdated ? .. ok.. thanks.. bt no point investing 7.5k in 4870 fr 6 mnths.. will make do with 9800gtx+ ..

so clear answer between the two.. 9800gtx+ ?

choose the one with the better cooler? and 9800gtx+ should have the edge with the TWIMTPB titles.

4850 will do quite well if you are willing to voltmod it a little, otherwise I would go with the nvidian.

rite said:
To run NFS Shift at 1680x1050 don't even think below a 4870 and Core i5.

Bro, I also have 4850(1gb) and am able to play NFS shift at FullHD(max settings) so I dont think it would be a problem to play at 1680x1050.....
