Long USB cables - do they work?

Thinking of getting a 3 meter cable for my S2. Will it charge at regular speed, or be very slow, or not charge at all at that length?

Will it work for data transfer?

I too use a 3 meter long, around 10 feet USB cable to charge and sync my iPhone and it works great.

I am curious as to why charging and data transfers to the device requires such a long cable! I prefer the shortest cables as far as possible - a lot less cable clutter on the table.

One reason I got was because I got it for free. Two of them. Moreover in my situation at my home, there is no plug point near my sofa and in such cases if my iPad / iPhone is not charged, I can charge them through the wall and still keep using simultaneously. Works in my situation.

I have used a 10 feet long USB cable with my 3G dongle during the golden bsnl unlimited 3G days, there was no performance drop and used to get consistent 5-6Mbps internet speed.
