A lot of this depends on what your eventually goal is. If its gaming then it depends on what kinda games you play generally and if these games would benefit a "lot" between the 4xxx and a 5xxx because you obviously have to shell out more money for something like 5070. Which also means that laptop should have a good display, RAM etc to let you experience it.
Waiting for price drops can be like a rabbit hole, you can never anticipate them. By the time you wait for price drop, you might be interested in the new gen (if any)

Why are you thinking of upgrading. Is your current system letting you down in some way? If yes, you can either upgrade it or buy a new laptop with either last gen or current gen gpu, the based upon your budget.
But , if your system is still performing adequately, I would suggest you wait for a year or so. Better specs are always coming. So the longer you can use your current one, the longer the next one will last.
