All those simple tasks depend on speed of internet and signal strength given by particular mobile operator.
Even if the ad shows they are in lift, the building might be having a tower nearby too. Or like all ads, the lift would be fake with a wifi router nearby. Or the sequences might have been sped up a bit to fit in the 10 second ad slot.

If they were in a lift in an area with weak signal could the phone do those tasks as fast as shown in the ad remains to be seen.
And what does this say exactly? Bad network affects all phones equally.

And moreover, it's an ad. They could've faked the entire thing for all we know. Almost every ad is faked and doesn't show the real deal.

The point they're making is not the network speed, but how fast you can interact with their UI to perform basic tasks. Taking a photo doesn't use network, nor does opening up offline maps. Those actions can be done real quick in Lumia phones.

@6pack

I had this very question. They are assuming many things in the ad like the user already probably has yahoo app (if it exists) or the bookmyshow app and even the facebook app. Also i am pretty sure the ad does not go for entire time continuously so its obviously rigged. Call it creative liberty.

Haha, it is an ad after all. Have you seen Karbonn/Micromax mobile ads? All shot in foreign locales with great cinematography and the phone's screen is transparent to blend in with the background.

Just watch Cartoon Network for a few hours. Some of the ads there will make you cringe, but since you're not its target audience, you'll have to bear with it.

I am thinking of going for this and screwing WP. I at least know one thing where Android and maybe iOS screws WP completely - Stocks.

Wonder if these people analyse all the android and Iphone ads like they do for windows phone. Just FYI, from a user perspective, I find it almost as smooth as they show in the ads. Twitter, MoHoo reader, phone, whatsapp, text, facebook, mail, I switch between them like crazy and its a delight to use.
Especially the new twitter app. Updates to most apps are flowing continuously. New Facebook app is updated almost every few days. Everyday, better apps make their way.

Im sorry, but for a reasonable person, there is no reason to use an android. WP8 is smooth and nokia covers any holes that there are in the OS. On android you have to weed through the muck to find a good app. Take for example downloading youtube videos. I have a 2gb playlist waiting to be watched and that on the first app i bumped into- Tube pro. On android i couldnt find a half decent app to begin with.[DOUBLEPOST=1370684339][/DOUBLEPOST]Does anyone have a unique coupon code from the challenge? They are giving free chargers to those that took the challenge and then bought a phone. I got one, without the challenge .
So if you did take the challenge and didnt get the phone, please do share.

This cuts both ways.

Firstly the fact that there are so many choices on Android is a good thing. More options = better. If whatever you find doesnt cut it for you, you can always look for something else.

Secondly, if there are less choices and the only options you can get are poor then it makes the situation even worse. You either use the below par app or dont use anything at all.

For example, on my old Android phone I could pick from half a dozen, decent to great Podcast apps. Free and paid. On my current Lumia 720 I have been able to find two that are barely tolerable at best. And the one that is free is like comparing Windows 95 to Windows 8 when it comes to usage and functionality with the free Android Podcast apps.

@cellar_door Android had what I call Crapps for the first three years after it was introduced. It takes time to have the number of apps reach critical mass before it is no longer a problem. It was only after mid-2011 that the app store on Android could boast its numbers AND quality. WP8 is growing faster than that. Once it gets enough marketshare, at least >10%, developers would hopefully jump in and release their apps on all platforms.
I meant Stocks as in the financial markets. All I need to do is tap the search button --> Google Now and I get financial updates ASAP, no need open a stupid app for the same.
Have you checked this: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/my-stocks-portfolio/70fab1bd-605e-e011-854c-00237de2db9e

I'm not an investor though, no idea about its quality.

Not an investor myself! I just found it to be awesome. All I need to say is "Company name" stock and I get the latest stock values using Google Search. Make enough searches and it shows up a stocks card with that values.

That reminds me about another thing --> Does WP have a torrent client? Needed to download some ebooks some time back --> Did it using GPRS (Had no WiFi)

Fair point but if you are buying something you are buying it now, not for future potential 1-2 years down the line. This is especially true for mobiles where in the next 1-2 years most people will have already replaced their phone at least once. As things stand the marketplace is pretty barren if you are coming from a app rich environment like Android.

I like a lot of things about the Windows 8 platform. But a lot items still feel like its something pulled out of a Beta. This is EXTRA true if you want a phone with good media functions. The whole video/audio section of WP feels so limited when compared to Android (and I am not talking about video formats).

I dont think that anyone's contesting the fact that Android is a capable OS. Its just that there are more effective Os out there that already do a lot of things better(from a normal user perspective) and whatever holes are there are being patched very quickly for them. So ineffect, once WP8 has a file browser, more apps, what will be your excuse? Look at Windows8 they are already patching whats wrong and changing things quickly.

When you reimagine Operating systems in such a big way, it takes time to figure out whats the correct way to do somethings. Take notification centre for instance. The WP8 screen was meant to be a notification centre + app drawer + widget. When you throw so much utility into something, its hard to change things with out breaking something. Hence how microsoft will incorporate a notification centre is something people are very curious about. ie if they do. I vote for an optin notification centre for apps without a live tile and choice to include the start screen apps too.

It's already leaked in a prototype. Apparently, a MS employee lost it in bus and someone bought it on ebay afterwards. The changes look good even at this stage, but I think the major update (8.1 'Blue') will only be coming early next year. Before that, there will be two smaller updates adding in FM radio functionality among a host of other features. The next update will release by this month's end or early next month I believe. Nokia is also planning to have a big update of their own for WP8 Lumias called "Amber".
