My friend wants a decent gaming system to play at 1920x1080 resolution. He has Ben E2200HD monitor. After looking a bit on internet, we decided to go with the following config. Please suggest corrections.(Both of us are newbies :) )

phenom 2 x2 550 ~5.5K
biostar 790gx A3+ ~6K
GSkill 2x2gb ddr3 1333 ~4K
coolermaster 690 ~4.5K
corsair tx650 ~7K
XFX 4850 1GB ~11K

Budget should not exceed 40K.

go for a 4870 instead of 4850 1gb it will give u betta performance :) n vx450 or vx550 will be more than nuff ;)

VX450 is enough for this rig but you are better off with 4870 or gtx 260.

BTW please post on proper section- this is a cpu and mobo section.

Mate the configuration you have decided is very good.Just make few adjustments.Instead of Corsair TX 650 get Glacial Power 600W wich will cost 4.5k.From the money you save, get a better graphics card like GTX260/275.

^^ Yup

@ pavasedge: If you want to give advice, make sure you are doing it properly. Half knowledge is as dangerous as speaking without any knowledge.

There are 2 glacialtech available in the market-GP AL650A and GP AL650AA. Its only AL650AA (channelwell tech I think) which is good. Failing to give this specific detail will obviously land up anyone to grab anything. When a model number is present, use it.

I will opt for ati 4870. Which brand should I look out for? is XFX 4870 good? My previous xfx 8800gt alpha dog used to generate lot of noise. We would like to get one which is cooler and quieter when idle. I might also be able to get it from US, so you could suggest a model which might not be available in India.

don't go for XFX, get anything else like Palit, Sapphire, or MSI...btw the present XFXs are far better than the old ones and sells at a premium price than the other brands.

E7400 Rs.5.8k

OCZ Vanquisher Rs. 1.3k

Gigabyte G31 Rs. 2.3k

Transcend 2x2 GB DDR2 800 Rs. 2.4k

GlacialPower 600 Rs. 4.5k

HD 4870/GTX 275 11-14k

Antec 300

Much better in terms of price and OC'ability because of extra HS...

God save me from AMD fanboys

First, he needs virtualization support in cpu as he is a programmer and uses linux a lot. intel 7xxx series is not an option.
Anyway, most reviews I have read suggested phenom 2 to be faster than 7400 and closer to 7500. And it costs less. And more importantly he wants it to be a bit future proof, ddr3, AM3,crossfire support seem better here compared to ddr2, lga775, single gpu solution.

Pehnom 2 x2 550 overclocks very well, I think, with Unlocked multiplier it should be simple. Which cpu cooler would be better for 550 cpu, if I want to get one? Around 2K might not be a problem. I have read good reviews about Xigmatek hdt coolers.

And if you were referring to me, I am not an amd fanboy, I own an Intel machine myself :). If I am missing something and intel gives me better vfm I am open to it, please sugggest with the above points in mind.

Yeah. Some guy PMed me on TDF forum who got his 1TB HD got damaged, his rams were dead and caps on his s2l burnt out. I am not sure if AL650A is a good psu or its the psu's fault completly despite this problem because it was user's fault for using iball 450w with his rig. He said he got recommendation of glacialtech 650w from someone @ TE. When I was troubleshooting with him, he specified the model number by which it reminded me of a pic where someone got from other forum I am on:

How good is this? I am not sure. Its only the AA version which is proven reliable according to hardware secrets' review as the OEM is a channelwell tech. Which is why you newbies need to emphasize the specific model number. Not being specific will lead to getting a wrong product and that leads to frustration just like this guy. This is TE forums afterall. Be specific and to the point when you are recommending hardware to people or else it will just generate bad rep to the forum uncessarily and this will make people to have a bad impression about you and your advice. TE forums is good for what it does because its the members who are good and specify things to limit any chance of getting a bad product to a minimum. I am sure people can follow the same funda that the senior members follow. If cant- not a problem you can always lurk around learn, research and then advice people. We are getting nothing out of this- we are just doing this so that people can get a vfm product. But you will have to make sure that you do it properly or else you are wasting your time giving wrong/inaccurate advices.

ati card Prices have dropped, i didnt knew, now msi 4870 1gb is available for 11.6K. Good enough? I will buy the system tomorrow.

I actually agree with you here.
AMD rules the roost when it comes to 30-40k rigs as of now, any higher or lower and you are better off with Intel.

+1 for Nvidia GPU

Once u use nvidia & u go for ATI u will see the crap frm ATI , i use HD 4850 but its cool fast ,, but no strong graphics like GTX series
