Thanks to Failtel who deactivated and recycled my prepaid number few months back, I will now have to get a new mobile phone number in either Mumbai or Maharashtra circle (after 2 months). I use only prepaid mostly because of lesser calls and very less SMS messages.
But I am interested in getting a 3G connection for the number I will be getting.
The phone will be used in Pune and Mumbai so I would prefer something which has 3G in both these circles.
Which operator should I opt for ? The operator should have decent 3G connectivity and decent plans. Unlimited usage on 2G after 3G quota is over would be great but not really required.

Reliance is having some good unlimited calls and data plan in Postpaid section at around 1499...dont have complete details, check on their site and even they are providing unlimited data on roaming. So this is an added advantage.
Prepaid will not have unlimited data as per my knowledge.

Some other members might enlighten on this....

Check Aircel also they are offering 1 GB of 3G data and then unlimited 2G data for Rs 198. Not sure about availability in Mumbai and Pune

for just surfing purposes and normal phone needs reliance 3g should do.for mah circle docomo 3g is good.for downloads only mtnl that too in mumbai.

Mumbai circle and Maharashtra circle is different. Also, you will find better pricing and add-on packs if you get a sim in Maharashtra circle, so get one from Pune when you have the chance.

I do not want to use 3G for downloading and all. Also the operator has to be same across Mumbai and Pune because i don't want to change SIM when i come to Mumbai or such. So need an operator who has 3G in both these circles. I know MTNL will allow using 3G on BSNL network in Pune and vice versa. Similarly i guess Vodafone has 3G in both these circles.
Any other options ?

I am looking at Vodafone too as i have read about its 3G reliability and consistency. The 502 recharge must be valid for a month right ? Actually my calling is not that much, so i prefer top ups as and when required. I am planning to go for a lifetime SIM + topups + 1GB plan at ~250 Rs.

I'm from Mumbai circle and this is what I usually recharge with:
Rs.24 - All local calls at 30p/min for a month
Rs.102 - Gives only 300mb of 3G for 1 month. :P This is quite low actually, but I'm on wifi the whole time at home and don't use much when outside. So save money here. The 251 bucks plan for 1GB is best. And yes, the speeds I get on Vodafone 3G are great, atleast in Mumbai.
Rs.35 - Gives 350 local sms free for 1 month. Don't use this nowadays since I never need to SMS. Everyone's on Whatsapp these days.

On the page you listed, i see few plans, 850 and above with something like..

Recharges : 850
Allowance (MB/GB) : 3 GB + 3 GB*

Validity : 30 days

What does the 3GB + 3 GB* mean ? I believe the basic quota is 3GB but the additional 3GB is what i don't understand.

MTNL would be a best operator for you as it has all features you need,

1.The 3G plan is very VFM like the Rs.76 3G recharge gives 1GB of 3G data for 7 days i.e 4 GB 3G data per month for Rs.304.

2.You can use the same MTNL sim on raoming in BSNL network the data usage is not charged separately.

The 3G plans on MTNL are also equally good, you also have an option of Unlimited Data without FUP or Speed Limits on MTNL just check the plans here

MTNL is definitely VFM but in my case i don't need the 3G for using in datacard but for occasional use in mobile. The place where i work is not really in Pune and i know that BSNL 3G connectivity is very very bad there. Hence i cannot go for BSNL.
But yes i will require another SIM card mostly for only data card access at home. I will be opening a thread for that later.

Apart from MTNL only Vodafone has 3G coverage in Mumbai & Maharashtra both, rest all operators would have either area only. But again in Vodafone you need to confirm if data roaming is free.
Vodafone has Rs.102 pack which gives 300MB for 30 days but confirm roaming charges if any.

Also you always have an option of switching into 3G mode when data is reqd while rest of times you can be on 2G network [for MTNL]. (Assuming 2G network is OK in Pune BSNL)

I have to get a new mobile number altogether. This is not going to be secondary SIM or anything, it will be my primary phone number so i cannot keep switching operators and i am not sure how good the number portability is as of now ? Whether they require numerous documents like before and how lethargic are these operators when it comes to porting. I have had very bad experience with my wife's number which we were never able to port out. It is not the price here, connectivity should be good in the areas where i intend to used the 3G. The areas for me are..

Mumbai - specifically Borivali area but elsewhere as well
Pune City
Hinjewadi Phase 2
Mumbai - Pune expressway

I was using MTNL in Mumbai(Andheri East) and had connectivity problems with BSNL in Pune (Koregaon Park) for the voice network. Wasn't using data then. Ported out of MTNL to Idea. The process was butter smooth. Later I ported from Idea to Tata Docomo. You need have no fear of porting out of MTNL.
In fact, even after successful porting, I was able to continue to use my MTNL SIM card for outgoing until I ran down the entire balance. :)
Idea didn't give me the same courtesy.
I guess my answer is too late for you in any case but it might help someone else who reads this thread.

I am on Vodafone now and it works well. But since last 2 days the EDGE and 3G inside my office cubicle is almost non existent. The EDGE is there but nothing works. Not even whatsapp. I dont know why but anyways lets see if they can fix it. I have already sent them tweet regarding the same.

Not sure of their 3G but Idea voice network is consistently good all the way from Mumbai to Pune (via expressway and train). Couldn't say the same with Tata Docomo. MTNL is decent in Mumbai but BSNL at my office was simply horrible.
Actually many of us moved together from Mumbai to Pune because our office sort of relocated. The general experience is that Tata Docomo, Pune number with 3G works reliably with no break in data connectivity but gprs on our Mumbai numbers is quite horrible.
