Also, tray problems don't necessary mean a bad drive. Burning Quality of the Samsung Drive we are talking about are much better than the LiteONs.
You can get it repaired for a nominal price if out of warranty or replaced if still in warranty.
MBI is an average quality media - not good not bad. But, they are crappy if you compare them with Taiyo Yudens.
However, I think what 200mph ment by crappy media was that faulty media (e.g. very fine hairline crack or defects) is the major reason for discs exploding in the Drive and not the drive itself.
As greenhorn said above, you need to give credit where it is due. This is my first Samsung Drive and I was a die hard LiteON fan. But, This drive blows the rest away :hap2:
BTW, the Samsung are a lot quiter than the LiteONs.
no problem with my moser baer 20x DVD Writer SATA :yahoo: had samsung cd writer before and it sucked bigtime...the tray just refused to pop-out.
There isn't going to be much variation between the Sony, Lite-On, Samsung and Pioneer drives on quality media like the TY and Verbatim discs everyone is testing on. The real bottle of the drive is revealed when burning sub-standard disks like some crappy MBI 16X, Sony 16D1 and those horrible Frontech and Princo (yuck!) disks.
that's where Pios and Benqs are quite good, LGs are horrible, and Samsung/L-O are middling.. it depends on the chipsets being used in the drives.
L-O and Samsung are using mediatek, traditionally very good on maxell, TY, Verbatim and Ricoh R01/R02 disks. Benq used their Nexperia chipset on the 16xx series of drives, Pio use chipsets developed with NEC, and LG use chipsets from either Panasonic or Renesas.
Another thing.. all these "20X", "22X" and "18X" writer speeds advertised are, for the most part, useless. They can burn say 2-3 MIDs (Yuden000-T03, MCC004, MCC03RG20, TYG03, MXLRG04 etc.) at 20X.. have you seen 20X media anywhere? Thought so..anyone tried 20X burns on the 16X Verbs though? I'd love to see results at 8X, 12X, 16X and 20X on those. I don't have a 20X writer, so if someone with an S-203 or L-O/MBI 20X drive can compare the media at those speeds, it would be appreciated.
Whew.. long post.. to summarise, don't go by the brandname if all you're going to be doing is burning TY 8X @ 8X.. heck, my old 812S@832S does damn well at those speeds with those discs!

my observation of samsung @ 18x on verb was HORRIBLE . bad scans and this is was for a MIS DVD+R 16X cake box tat my frend got for me from singapore. i did not even try testing the MII ones on these. and even the TY dont burn that gr8. the PIE just reach 2x 3x the amount simply not worth .

The MBI -R discs only at 16x on it.
Have yet to come across any media which can be burned at 20x but, I probably won't as speed doesn't affect me. I like the burn quality the best and hence, I normally burn at the Speed the media is certified for.
I wanted to get a BenQ AFAIK they have stopped production of their great drives. Even BenQ India site show no ODDs now

1) when the drive is empty, tray just refused to pop-out. u have to hit open button again and again and pray that tray comes out. i had to put one disk in drive all the time to avoid this problem.
2) sometimes. when u put a disk and close the tray (with bare hands), drive just refused to read it. instead it opens up the tray again. after 5-6 tries it read the disk.
