Its hot and dry in Hyderabad. 40+ C throughout summer. Mumbai/Chennai are humid and hit 40+ only for a few days.

Bangalore is way costlier than Hyderabad/Chennai (>50%). Avoid coming to Bangalore unless you are getting a proportionately higher salary.

I would use the word to refer to the collective set of activities available to a person after his work hours, couldn't find any other term.
Thats too broad a definition to be meaningful. How late's the work hours ? Typically nightlife begins 9ish onwards. I'd go with saying the venues you mentioned stay open late. Great if you're a teenager or under legal drinking age, not so great otherwise. Yes, there is also the added implication that alcohol is served on the premises.

I bet its your 14 year old visualization(you mentioned '96) of the place that puts you in such a state of disbelief?
Not me, my cousins were there for 5 years upto 2002 and told me nightlife then was not exactly in the same league as BLR. But thats nearly 10 years ago now. Had your closing hours been later i'd see no probs beating BLR. Delhi stays open till 3am, its the leader here.

A good night out for me starts at 11 and ends at 2. Fat chance of ever doing that now in my city. Live music has to end at 11:30pm, kickout is midnight. Actually, it used to be worse, some morons banned 'live music' for some time here and the closing hours were even earlier like 11pm. Its just recently it crept up back to 12. Blame it on my city coming tops in the country for crime !!

All this compared to the good old days with no fixed closing hours and places stayed open till when the guests left. New years could go on till the early hours of the morning. My city was unable to manage its growth and screwed up. So thats where i'm coming from ;)

Either of our claims cant be validated without feedback from third person(s).
Preferably one that understands what 'nightlife' means, sure :)

damn said:
Just so I know, was your question the result of a sense of disagreement?
Only on the definition of the word nightlife.

damn said:
Hyd does get negative points in case of "Live entertainment" though. Bangalore has housed several international concerts, has way more cricket matches, golf course events, yearly tennis tournaments and the likes.
Again none of these i'd consider live entertainment, these events are one off's once in a blue moon.

All i mean by 'live entertainment' is a band playing in a restaurant, bar or club. As in things you could expect on a regular repeating basis many times in the year.

Going about it from your literal perception of the word.
Consider the disappointment one would experience based on misunderstanding what the word means.

Not at all when i was hoping he'd be right. It's plain to see that i've been trashing my own city :)

Sarcasm? You almost make it sound like my apparent misuse(which it actually is not, explained below, read on) of the word disclaims everything else that I've said. Also, the word is derived from convention, there is no fixed meaning for it.
The same page(first result in google) quotes the following right below the above text from a different dictionary.

Quoting our definitions

"I would use the word to refer to the collective set of activities available to a person after his work hours"

"Night-life to me is pubs, lounges, clubs, live entertainment, restaurants etc."

Your definition of the word was a subset of mine. Your above implications are thus nullified.

And towards the relativity of the subject, in my stand, I've said/explained everything I had/wanted to.

My sincerest apologies to the thread starter. Reason I kept answering was cause a couple of posters did seem to want to know about the general who-hows of Hyderabad besides the thread starter's query itself. It went from expressing opinions to a debate in 3 posts, but yeah I'm done trying now. Not like him being misinformed is gonna do me any bad.

i still dont have an answer .... can we kindly stop going OT and help me locate what place to start searching for a place to stay near the hitech city where there are some daycare centres and availability of maids ( not the french uniformed ones :P )

You can stay here -
Stay in Hitech city (or MADHAPUR~ 1km) - rent for 2 bhk ~ 10k to 12k, 3 BHK ~12k to 17k.

Stay in Kondapur(~3km from Madhapur) you have good shops and every thing for daily ife. Rent 1k-3k less compare Madhapur.

Stay In Miyapur area(~7-10 Km from Hitech city) - rent 2 BHK(6k-10k) again depending upon area, KPHB side it will be costly.

For bringing vehicles -

you can drive for 1 month, without paying any taxes(but police wala may ask you for NOC, it depends how you handle them)

After paying road tax you drive for 1 year, check the tax and other things on their site - Welcome To TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT GOVERNMENT OF ANDHRAPRADESH - INDIA

Btw I was stopped 2-3 times and I told them I had paid taxes, but those fools were still asking for NOC, Had to tell them in High voice that why would you need NOC If I had paid taxes, I can drive the bike for 1 year. He told you can drive for as long as you want :P (he meant no 1 year limit, probably he didn't know)

You can drive around for one month. After that you need to pay the road tax, and for paying the road tax, they ask you for the NOC.

^^no.. you can pay the road tax without NOC, NOC is only needed if you want to register the bike/car here(getting an AP number plate)

For road tax following documents are required - 1. RC Book 2. Insurance 3. Pollution certificate 4. Invoice of the vehicle

I didn't have Invoice, but Invoice value was written on the RC Book, but still those fools were asking for Invoice. Probably with a agent it would have been easy, but then I got the duplicate invoice from where the Vehicle was purchased. After that it took 2.5 hours at RTO office to get every thing done. if you have all these 4 documents then better go by yourself. LoL I was high that time :P

I've been driving around in Hyderabad for arnd 4 months (in my Kerala regn Pulsar).. Got caught 7-8 times.. Never asked for road tax (i've got all papers clean).. They asked just for the NOC, which i didnt have for the first two months.. Still got away bribing (it really cheap.. as low as 30bux).. After the first two months got the NOC & after that no probs..

lol.. did it ever occur to you that you started it...

I have lived in bangalore and in hyd. I prefer Hyd, yes I have a slight bias...

Bangalore is crowded and every time I step into Bangalore I feel like I am boxed in. Its like my field of vision has narrowed... Lanes are so narrow and the city loots you... people are lazy....etc etc....

Weather: Bangalore

Cost of living: Hyd

People/Attitude: Hyd

City: Hyd

Daily-help/labour: Hyd

If your work place is in hitech city, consider living in Kondapur or even bit further.

@vij: seems like a good summary, thanks.

i'm thinking of driving down from pune to hyderabad just to check out the place, i believe it takes about 10 hrs one way? should try it during my next long weekend break.

can someone whos been to (and lived for a good amount of time in) both pune and hyderabad post a quick comparision like @vij above between the two? :)

mmm... okay, I've lived in pune for 2.5 years 2.5 years ago.

Weather: pune's weather - rains ~= hyd's weather - summer -5C. (better run away from hyd in summer just like I used to do in rainy season in pune :P )

Cost of living: definitely hyd. I feel its around 30%less. renting a house will require only 2months advance and most of the times no agreement. dont pay more than 500 to the broker at any cost.

People / Attitude: Hyd. you will get some change for your 100rs without buying anything. and the shops dont close at 8PM. things start to get cheaper once you start moving away from city unlike pune. and no shop owner will say "khareedna hai to lo nahi to nahi". people are not as good as bombay people but much better than pune people. and auto wallahs crib a lot but much better than blore/pune.

City: hyd definitely. great roads. 4X pune's size. anywhere wine spots. lots of chicken/mutton shops (beef too but you gotta go to old city). but the saddest thing is; there are almost no places to visit around in less than 100km range for weekend rides. you gotta go more than 150 most of the times. nearest beach is 350km but awesome.

Daily help/labour/bai: much better. if your mom can negotiate; you can get a maid for around 600-800 for a family of 3-4.

pune-hyd is 535kms.

PS: I am a hardcore hyderabadi, so expect some % of bias. :P

I would like to add.

Food : Hyd++++++
Traffic: Less in Hyd. But no one follows the rules.

Best place to live is in Srinagar Colney, Banjara Hills or KPHB. Once you settle in some place u will get maids easily.
