MUMBAI: Mumbai's Podar International School has instructed all its students to buy iPads in order to take part in the learning process.

Vandana Lulla, school director-principal , issued a circular last week that claims the management's decision to use the Apple iPad 2 in the classroom has been welcomed by parents. Some parents , however, feel the move is impractical, distractive and may hamper the growth of students.

The circular states, "Parents now have the choice of either purchasing the iPad 2 from the school on an outright basis or avail of a financial scheme on offer. You also need to indicate if it will be purchased by you on your own."

The school has told the parents to indicate their choice on a form issued by them to help them negotiate bulk orders. The parent of a class II student said, "There has been no consensus on the issue among parents. I am opposed to the move as it will hamper, rather than aid a kid's education.

I would prefer my kid to learn and write using traditional methods , instead of exposing him to advanced gadgets at a tender age. " Another parent said, "I will shift my student to another school as it is purely a money-making racket.

It is an irrational decision as examinations will be conducted using the conventional format and not on iPads."

This reminds me of a school in my locality which tied up Adidas for the Summer & Winter uniforms each costing Rs.5K , obviously parents opposed and the authorities gave in.

Purely money milking techniques in the name of education. :@ And mind you, that the iPads are a compulsion and not an option for these students.

Your views ?

Now those students will watch pron on the go... These school authorities must be beaten up for making everything compulsory.

It wont require a protest from parents even if i am predicting correctly.

The news in the TOI will be enuf for the school authorities to grow brains pretty quickly.

Well, if our uneducated ministers can get an Ipad then why leave the students behind? Even MBA colleges make it compulsory for students to get a laptop. I am assuming these are the schools where the rich kids go, as it is most of them would already be having an Ipad and for the rest it is not going to be an issue. If at all, it is going to be a matter of status symbol. Mind you these are the schools where the average student gets a monthly pocket-money of 15k plus.

Anyways, if teaching through means of technology is the ultimate goal, why not opt for cheaper options? Whats wrong with Akash tablet if sharing notes on a tablet is the objective?

Apparently, they might have not heard of the Aakash tablet. But then, this is an international school, they will want the best.

Cheaper option will not suit them & their school STATUS after all they need to maintained to be a Billionaires school so can easyly get up to 6 Digit fees & huge donations for admission. Also for Aakash they may get 5%- 8% commission (up to Rs. 240/-) & for iPad ... do I need to explain?

The donation for that school would have been in lacs considering run of the mill schools charge around 30k upwards nowdays. why were the parent not cribbing then? a 40k pad is nothing compared to the amount they paid to get admission for their kid in that school :S

^ I think parents aren't complaining about the cost. They are more concerned if it is a right move to put a multimedia device into kids' hands for educational purposes

Some % of OVER ALL parents DO NOT HAVE TIME but LOTS OF MONEY so who cares :(

Some have time but (different mind set) as SCHOOL MANAGEMENT sip their blood they SET to balance it from others who doing business/job with them.

And rest looking/wants ANNA to lead them.

As it is, the education is being dumbed down and there's more emphasis on mugging and vomiting rather than understanding. Now kids won't have to write also, just type it on your iPad. I remember as kids how excited we were to write with fountain pens. It was almost a sign of 'growing up'. And then trying to learn the perfect handwriting ! :ashamed: And spilling ink bottles on each other. :ohyeah:
Nowadays teachers have lost their devotion and students have lost their passion. It's all about money, money and more money.

seems a money-making scheme to me. long gone are the days when educating was considered a 'service'. everything's a business now. i remember even my chief officer on my last ship fervently working on a long-thought of plan to open a chain of schools immediately after disembarking. needless to say 'self'-service must be the motive ;)

i think the principal might have a realtive who is a premium reseller or a black market dealer, other than that i couldnt think of any practical reason to buy those overpriced monstrosities

Its called evolution. It wasn't a long time ago when you were writing letters to your loved ones and posting it through post boxes, then email happened and it changed the way you interacted. It won't take a long time for paper and pen to get obsolete. If the schools are preparing our young ones for the future, whats wrong in it? I strongly believe that one should adapt with technology.

Yeah its a pretty good initiative ,These days colleges and B schools make you buy laptops so why not a tablet for school kids?

Android or any other tablets don't even come close to the amount of educational apps the iPad has, so I guess its an obvious choice.

This must be a school for the elite. Something like GD Goenka here at New Delhi. I quite find this mandate pointless. As it is the curriculum is so rote and memorize how will a device such as this aid them. And I doubt it will quicken the ability to take "notes" since at such a young age they would not be able to spell or type anyways. Will be more of a distraction and theft hazard for parents to think of. The traditional method of writing and penning down instructions / thought / personal notes goes a long way in development and setting up a structured thought process methodology. Plus it will provide so much more scope for the child to be distracted while listening to the tutor/teacher. A notebook+pen limited this to a great extent.

Making them adept with tech should be encouraged, and I'm all for it. Pretty sure students studying in schools like this will be having desktops and laptops at home. Wanna make them adept with tech ? Give them a consignment to do. Ask them to make a PPT presentation. Tell them to write on a topic with proper notations, spellings, capitalization, spacing etc. Tell them to make a drawing in Paint. If they are a bit older, ask them to make a dummy website on any of the WYSIWYG web builders available on the net. Still a bit older, challenge them with exciting programs. I would have understood had they made it compulsory to get a netbook, but an iPad ? Seriously ? So using an iPad is the forefront of tech now ? I have an iPad bought in March this year. After the initial one month, all it is used is to play Angry Birds and occasionally to draw some pics/art when I'm getting very bored. I don't understand the benefit of an iPad worth 40k over a netbook worth 20k, specially in a school setting.

As far as writing letters is concerned, well I still do. My cousins (bros & sis) were born and brought up in the UK. Both my bros are consultant doctors and sis is the GM of The Bank of Tokyo, London Branch. All of them are quite well versed in tech, in some areas more than me. And while the bulk of the conversation between us happens via email, we still write letters on special occasions. My bday is coming up in 3 weeks and I just got a beautiful card from my sis wishing me alongwith a hand written letter. No amount of technological evolution can replace personalization. That letter to me is more important than any gift she could have bought me as it shows she went through the effort to think and write for me.
My granny (who died in Jan this year) used to live with my uncles in UK. While she was tech paralyzed, she used to make sure she writes us a letter every 2-3 months. And she insisted on us doing the same. I still remember we sent a reply to her letter as an email and boy, was she pissed ! Mom and dad made sure I wrote at least a paragraph in the letters we used to send her every now and then. Now when she's no more, we still hang on to her letters. Re-reading them brings such a big smile to our faces.
Can you feel the same about emails, however personal they are ?
Letter writing, in fact writing in general, is losing it's significance. I feel terribly ashamed seeing how not only teens, but college goers & grad students struggle in letter & application writing. It's just pathetic.

Sorry if it's a long post. :P
