Mumbai Suburban residents save on electricity cost - Tata Power

This is a very important subject but I did not know where to put it so here it goes.

Some of you may already know this so excuse me and refrain from flaming for that alone.

Tata Power is willing to supply power to individual homes even though the whole society is getting power from Reliance Infra. The tariff is substantially lower. For instance, for the first 100 units a month, Reliance charges Rs 2.96 while for Tata it is 1.55.

In the next slab upto 300 units, Reliance charges 5.56 while Tata charges Rs 3/- And it goes on. My own typical usage for the last year averaged out to 273 units per month. I calculated that I would save over Rs 500 per month. Imagine those whose bills run into several thousand rupees a month. Their savings would be mind boggling.

One caveat that I must mention. Tatas calculate a wheeling loss of 9.9% which is added to your unit consumption before the amount is calculated. But even with that the saving is huge.

The procedure is simple. I applied on Oct 25 and today they switched over. All you need to do is to download the application form from their website Tata Power :: Home fill it up and submit it to one of their customer care centers along with proof of identity and residence and your latest paid Reliance bill. Their website also allows you to track the status of your application.

All clean and simple. They charge Rs 25/- for the changeover plus they retain a security deposit based on your sanctioned load.

They have a toll free customer care number 1-800-209-5161

Re: Heads up for Mumbai Suburban residents

@Emil

Is it that tata people will come and change the meter box or what happens after you make this application and how does reliance does not object ?

Can you give me more information on this?

Re: Heads up for Mumbai Suburban residents

^reliance cannot object since it is the right of the consumer to choose the power supplier .
Also the main source of power for reliance is tata so it is the case of dissolving the middleman.
Also since reliance does not have to pay anything to tatas and reliance gets the money for their infrastructure they do not stand to lose on revenue as such.

Re: Heads up for Mumbai Suburban residents

ggt has it right.

@raksrules - In the application form you have the options of retaining the Reliance meter, changing to Tata's meter or using your own meter. They don't charge you anyway if it is their meter. I opted for the Tata meter. They provided one by Secure Meters, much neater and more compact than the old one from RI.

For the cables etc., Tata's continue to use the existing infrastructure. For the power itself, as ggt pointed out, since Tata supplies in bulk to Reliance, it is just a matter of accounting.

There are two items in the Tata tariff that I guess are there to compensate Reliance. These are called the wheeling loss and the wheeling charge. The wheeling loss is currently 9.9% and this is added to your unit consumption for calculating the charges.

The wheeling charge is an amount of Rs. 0.50 per unit added to the tariff. So the 0-100 unit charge goes from 1.05 to 1,55 and the 101-300 unit charge goes from 2.50 to 3.00. I assume that this charge will be absent if you are a new customer to Tata and not a changeover customer.

Despite these charges the saving is considerable.

After you make the application, your application gets forwarded to Reliance Infra for verification. After that, they schedule a joint meter inspection where there will be representatives from both companies. After reading the meter and getting the Reliance Infra rep to sign off on it, they change the meter. We had a downtime of less than 10 minutes for all this. They prepare an inspection report and get the customer to sign off on it as well.

There is absolutely no hassle for the customer.

@Emperor - just a small clarification. AFAIK there is no online form that I know of if you are referring to applying online. The form is available for download online which you need to print and fill up and submit along with the documents mentioned. All very clear and straightforward.

Feel free to ask anything if I can answer.

According to what I was told, the deposit amount is calculated based on the last bill and is to be paid in check.

And what if you're in BSES areas?

BSES is now Reliance Energy or Reliance Infra.

Perhaps you mean BEST?

It is on their website. Rs 200/- per KW sanctioned load. I was charged Rs 800/- so including connection charges, it cost me Rs 825/-

Re: Heads up for Mumbai Suburban residents

Had applied for change over on 08-NOV-2010, the status on the web says "Pending for joint meter reading" and Suggestive Changeover Date:01-DEC-2010, i think the joint meter reading has been taken as reliance have issued a bill after their meter reading on 24th nov.

And What happens to the security deposit held by reliance energy? Will it will be adjusted against this month's bill. Any thoughts on that ?

Re: Heads up for Mumbai Suburban residents

What is your normal meter reading date with Rinfra?

For me it was 15th. My application was on 25 Oct and they did the joint meter reading to more or less coincide with the next Rinfra meter reading date.

In my case the status first showed "Awaiting verification from Rinfra" and after a few days changed to the one you have. My original suggestive (sic) date was 15th Nov. After some days it chagerd to 20th Nov and still later to 16th Nov which was the day they did the joint meter reading and changed the meter.

I later called Rinfra for my security deposit. They told me that I have to submit a application with a few documents. When I explained in more detail, the guy looked through my account and told me they had already raised the new bill and they had deducted to security deposit from my bill to arrive at the dues.

I have yet to receive my latest bill but I believe I will get the bill with the deposit adjusted.

Re: Heads up for Mumbai Suburban residents

Well as said my meter reading was on 24th Nov, meter reading taken, and bill has been issued by reliance. Dont know whether to pay reliance bill as this one has to be adjusted agianst my security deposit. Due date is 18th dec so time is there.

Waiting for 1st dec, as their website says its the Dday for change over. Then will call reliance and TATA, if no one calls from their side.

Re: Heads up for Mumbai Suburban residents

my average unit consumption is 400 units so wat will be my deposit pls do explain

Re: Heads up for Mumbai Suburban residents

Anyone shifted from Reliance to Tata Power ? Need to know the differences in bill amount.

In my case, the bill is issued showing balance due after deducting the security deposit so it is clear. In your case, your bill will still show the entire amount due. So I'm not sure it will work well enough for you. If you had a very small security deposit then you may still be able to get it adjusted in your next(probably last) bill.

Anyway since you have the time you may as well wait. After the changeover, you can call Rinfra and ask what is to be done.

I think that your sanctioned load may be estimated at 5 or 6 KWH. The security deposit will then be 1000/- or 1200/-

It is calculated as Rs 200/- per sanctioned KWH

I have shifted but haven't got my first Tata bill yet. Based on the information I gathered from their website and call centre, I calculated that my average bill would be lower by around Rs 500/- per month.

For heavy consumers, the saving will be much more.

Re: Heads up for Mumbai Suburban residents

Where do you stay ? how long did you took to switch over ?

Marol, Andheri East. Applied on Oct 25th. My Reliance Energy bill reading date was Nov 15th. But they had a joint meter reading on 16th Nov and completed the changeover the same day. So just over 20 days start to finish. Probably would have been quicker if not for the Diwali break.

Re: Heads up for Mumbai Suburban residents

UPDATE
They came today for the joint meter reading, as said on website. Signed a form which contained the present meter reading.:hap2:

Now about the security deopsit, it goes as this. ;)
Since the reliance meter reading was on 24th nov, they have issued the bill till that period. The joint meter reading was on 1st dec , so for the period of 24th Nov to 1st Dec, reliance will issue another bill on which the security deposit will be adjusted.
Have consume 66 unit for this period, so the amount will less than my security deposit, have to see how they refund the rest of the amount.

And no Change of meter for now, as the guy over the borivali officewhile submitting the form told that they would change it after the 1 month of tata power bill, even though i had asked for TATA meter. I think he said that because there is a shortage of meter. :ashamed:

For those who want to know how much they would save check this calculation out.
[attachment=6807:12032.attach]

Note:
1. If u were consuming 300 units, u would be consuming 330 unit on tata, taking into account the Wheeling loss of almost 10%. ie 10%of 300 is 30 so, u ur consumption would be 300+30=330.

2.Additional Charges when switching over to tata are
  • Wheeling Charge (.50p/Unit)
  • Wheeling Loss (appx.10%)

3. Wheeling Charge - Money Paid by TATA to Reliance for using their infrastructure(cables)

4.Wheeling loss
The difference between the total billed units and total meterd units due to wheeling/distribution losses of Reliance network.
ie. IF 100 units is suppiled to the network , 10 units is lost and balance 90 units is metered.
Hence if a customer consumes 90 units which is metered, he is billed for 100 units.
So if consume 300 its 330 on bill, 400 then 440 and so on.

But even after all this aperson stand to gain atleast 500rs on 300 units.
