I tried to do a firmware update on my 5800 and it bricked the phone. I did the update via NSU and it downloaded the whole package and started updation. But in the middle , the software said no response and to reinsert the phone.

It made the phone a brick

:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

I went to Nokia care today and they are saying it is a harware boot trouble. I am not sure whether these nokia care guys are competant enough.

I have a few questions

Does a firmware upgrade harm the hardware beyond recovery by flashing...

They are saying they need to send the phone to headquarters in Delhi for fixing. It will take atleast 2 weeks... Am I entitled to get a new phone as replacement?. If yes, how will I make them do that?

Any inputs are welcome.........

yeah some times the boot/flash chip or whatever it is called, is required to be changed, i once bricked my brothers 6270 while updating the firmware but that was not through nsu

Firstly they will try to repair it, if they cant then only they will make a new replacement.

Any inputs are welcome.........

If you have some contacts in the nokia care of your city then you can get it earlier or even get a new one as replacement.

that sux man....even my k790 i died today while upgrading firmware [not comparing the loss]. It sucks when things die....mine doesn't have warranty as well :(

@Agent_47 : I dont have any as such :(

I am so desperate now. I am now parting with the dream phone for some many days... :(

Are you saying that reflashing alone will not solve the issue?. Is it that the Nokia Care people just bluffing?.

But to say, when I got the 5800 , on connecting it to the PC via USB , it was showing some weird trouble. The browser with the phone contents will close after some 10 seconds. Even it was not being properly detected by the PC and I was not able to use the nokia PC suite. Somehow it got connected afterwards, but I was not able to make backup of the phone. It was saying "phone content not readable" . THis was all happening before I tried the upgrade. I thought it was just the system/driver trouble and not the phone... Now I suspect.....?

I had a sony w810i and it also gave me a blank white screen one day. But since I could not find a sony ericsson centre nearby(I was lazy), I had flashed it by myself using "FAR manager" and some guides from the net and it solved the issue. Still now I am running on that one. Why cant be that done on Nokia

I think if the problem could have been solved out by flashing again then the nokia care could have done it themselves, Why would they bluff to you, and if the problem is out of there hands they would send it to their head quarters for repairs, i think your mobiles flash IC might have been damaged while flashing, happened with my 6270 using phoenix for flashing, i thought NSU was safe :ashamed: , i just flashed my n73 which is out warranty two days ago.
I know how you are feeling right now, i have gone through this but dont worry in 15 days you will get back your phone as good as new.:)

thats really sad dude...I just ordered mine from ebay...fingers crossed, and yes u can ask the nokia dealer to provide you with a replacement for sure.

Try to redo the f/w. Clean install everything.

else R.I.P :P

BTW you can also play innocent with nokia care guy just tell em your cell discharged and is not booting now.

ya in this scene ,just give it 2 nokia guys, its a new phone ,let them fix it and get any phone as replcaement ,they generally give some lower end phone as replcaement if u insist for it ,Hope ur phone will come back as gud as new ALL THE BEST:hap2:

yes dats the best u can do
ur phone is under warrrnaty
nothing to worry bout it:tongue:

At least I am a little relieved with all the feedbacks.

@Agent : After the NSU update the phone was not booting. So I did download Phoenix to check whether it will fix it.. But I did not go beyond making phoenix detect the phone. Hope that just connecting the phoenix itself will not corrupt the ROM.

About the replacement, they are saying that they will be able to get my phone by the end of this week or next monday.

What version were you trying to update to? AFAIK, Nokia haven't released any new f/w in the past couple of days.

I was having v11. To be precise, details below

Soft v date : 09-12-2008

Cust v 11.0.008.blue.01

Cust v date 09-12-2008

lang set 19

Type RM-356

NSU told that there is one v20 available for this mobile. So I went for updation.

May be. I did not manually disconnect it until NSU said to do so...:S

Your phone may got disconnected while updation process is going on, it happens sometimes.

My phone is going for repair. They said that the ROM is gone and it is not flashable and the phone had virus.

Is it possible for mobiles like this to get infected with virus if we take THOSE sites in browser (u know what I mean, ahem!. I did copy and install some programs and games). The Nokia care guy said that he will try to get it back by 5 days. He told me that I will be given it back by at the most Monday..

Hope that it will be ok....

Footnote: I really suspect that it was a trouble with the phone hardware itself. The phone was not detecting properly via USB and I was not able to backup the contacts via BACKUP with NSU.

Also I had trouble making the applications run in the background in the phone. When I press end button, Instead of going to background, it was getting killed. All these made me do the upgrade so that I will get a hassle free fone.. Now I am hassle free with my old W810i :(

Ill tell u wat happened when I upgraded...

I downloaded 122MB of the file and during download kep the phone connected via USB.

When downloading it automatically got disconnected the file from the internet via pc suite...but it was still showing as connected via the other nokia tools..I did not get worried as this disconnection thing was specified in NSU.

When the upgrade started at 15mins, that same recover your phone thing popped up i.e. my phone got disconnected and bla bla.

I tried again and again and the same thing was happening, recover your phone.

Then in the last I tried to just find my phone thru PC suite manually, and it worked.

P.S. This thing again happened when I was reinstalling the firmware :@ :@

Think its a NOKIA bug

most probably it is a problem with ur pc. check ur pc before attempting to connect ur standby or ur repaired phone.

I had used the mobile at office pc also :ohyeah:. It was showing the same weird USB activity there too..(intermittent connection and open explorer window closing). The weird part is that once I drag something to the phone folder, it will continue transfering even after the window I opened on the phone got closed by itself. I thought the same as you(PC trouble) until I stumbled on this firmware update trouble.

Which phone will nokia care give as standby? Same model or old one.. Dont call me stupid for asking this question.:bleh:

i doubt that they would give the same model as standby as yours is an high price model.

To add salt to the wound... now I see that we can get the 5800 for 16.5k ... I paid 19k to those damn ppl just 4 days ago and now I have no mobile. My bad :(
