PC Peripherals My CPU Fan stops working every few months

Friend i have a problem,

I never seen that in my friend circle that anybody change his CPU fan. But i have to change my CPU fan twice a year for the previous 2 year, i already change 3 fan and going to change a another before the summer come into force.

I do not know why this happen, After installing a new CPU fan it work fine for 2 or 3 month then it is going slow down and after a 2 more month the fan stop working. I mean fan stop suddenly without any reason and my desktop take restart. Even i try with the cooler master fan but result is the same. when i entered into bios menu to see the CPU temperature there is a line showing the fan's rpm, it show the speed some time '0' and some time it '200000', i do not know why this variation, And after staying on the page for 8 to 10 second my PC get hang. even i can not exit from the bios at any cost , then i have to restart from the cabinet front panel. Every time i entered in that particular page ( showing fan speed page) my pc get hang, and i restarted from the cabinet. As my fan speed slow down my pc get heated within a very short time in open the computer.

My pc is branded pc. HCL - AZZ001138 [model no].

Small cabinet ,or you can call brifcase cabinet not usual cabinet,

Intel micro atx - DG31PR

Core 2 Duo 3.93GHz

3 GB of ram

320 GB of Hard Disk

Dvd Writer {Brand not known may be Lg}

Smps 250 watt

Please help me my friend what should i do? Is it mother board problem? Or should i change the cabinet with smps. or if mother board problem then which mother board should i install, Which company mother board is better ?

I have no graphic card.

Please answer me.

If the fans are connected to the motherboard then it could be a hardware or BIOS issue, try to update the BIOS of motherboard. Get the latest one available on your motherboard manufacturer's website for your motherboard and install it. If it still doesn't help then it could be that motherboard is responsible i.e. the socket(fan header) is supplying more power than what its rated for and what's required by the fans to work, eventually leading the fans to die early. Is your motherboard under warranty ?

If its directly connected to the power supply then it could be that your power supply is the culprit but I am not sure about that.

BTW how old is your power supply ? Is it under warranty ?

No, i do not have warranty. As i told i purchaces branded pc , HCL. The company give me 1 year warranty at all, which is over on 11 october 2010. And unfortunately the issue start from April 2011.

2nd, My Fan connect on motherboard, at 4 pin CPU fan connector. (though the fan have only 3 pin which is installed now on motherboard, but i previously i purchaces 1 4 pin fan but that fan also die after 5 month.

I contact to hcl for the issue but they said they do not know about this matter but if i want they can came and look on the matter but they charge only Rs. 750/- for the first look and after that they can abale to give me the opinion what to do and what money i have to spend. They do not touch my pc, only look from the outside on the first look, they told me this on a phone call.

but the cost is little more extra for me.

What should i do friend. ???????

Sounds like an issue with your motherboard header. Try getting a fan with a molex connector and connect it directly to your PSU.

Hopefully the PSU should be ok, since the same 12V rail powers the fan and the rest of the system.

Also, please post temperature screenshots from Realtemp.

no point wasting money on those HCL idiots.. the kind of money they charge, rs. 750 is way too much.. even if you get an outside technical person to fix the issue, and arrange for his transportation in an AC taxi, it will still cost you lesser...

and i dont know how much this will help, but if you can just post a screenshot of your BIOS screen so we can know what kind of options are available on it for CPU and cabinet fan controlling....many BIOS systems have automatic dynamic fan speed controlling and other stuff... if there are any such automatic features, you can also switch them off and see if the problem persists..

Sorry i can not able to post any screen shorts, because I do not know how to post an image,

Any way there is two separate option in the bios setting . one is CPU fan control and the other is system fan control both are enable at this moment.

i took the fan to a friend after looking he said that the fans used to have 2 copper coil in it , and in my case one coil is die in each case so the fan speed became half. And as per your reply i will check the issue with disable the setting after purchasing a new fan.

But tell me why my computer hang when i entered into the bios setting > advance > hardware monitoring [this page show the fan speed , CPU temperature, motherboard temperature, etc.]

In my case after entering in the page if i stay on the page for just 8 to 10 second the computer getting hang, i have to restart the PC from the cabinet restart bottom. WHY ANY IDEA.

DOES THE MOTHERBOARD NEED A DOCTOR.

MY GENERAL FAN SPEED : 2150- 2160 [some time it show the speed is 0 and some time it show it speed is more than 210000 . I do not know why]

MY CPU TEMPERATURE : 37

MY MOTHERBOARD TEMPERATURE : 71

Is the motherboard is OK?

My SMPS is just 250 watt , does it matter in the issue ?

my computer is mainly use at home but i use to play some game like IGI 2 convert strike, cricket 07 , counter strike , NFS 7 underground etc.

The company HCL does not set any Graphic card in this computer so i do not have any.

Remember my smps is just only 250 watt. whether my friends pc have 450 watt of smps.

Whoa 71 C ! That's pretty high considering your processor is at CPU us at 37. It would be better if you could post some Real Temp screenshots.

How about buying a better cabinet which actually cools the components ?

Did you update your BIOS to the latest one available from Intel's website ? It may reduce your BIOS freezing issues.

1. Double check your CPU temps with Realtemp. You can just post the Temperature value if you are unable to take a screenshot.

2. Download and run CPU-Z . Click the Mainboard tab, and cross-check that the model is exactly DG31PR. Also check the BIOS version. Post values here, or screenshot.

dont know how much this will help. but you can try removing your CMOS battery so that all the bios settings get resetted..

hey man..sorry.. but we dont require the location of the image on your hard drive.. first upload the image to some image hosting website. or just facebook, if you've got a facebook account.. upload the image, then right click the uploaded image and select 'Copy Image URL'.

LET ME EXPLAIN

URL means Universal Resource Locator. That means, the location of an object on the internet. The location that you are specifying over here is the path of your local harddisk where the image is stored. We cannot access your computer and hence you need to upload the image on the internet. some websites where you can upload images. flickr.com, facebook.com, imageshack, photobucket etc etc.. or what you can do is attach the image in the post. that way, you will have to upload the image to techenclave, and post it here as an attachment.

infact do the attachment method. it will be the easiest. while posting, click on more reply options. then below you will find the attach files option. click on choose files, and then when the small window opens up, go to the image in the Documents that you mentioned above and double click the file. you will see that the file starts getting uploaded. once its done, click on My Media option (the area where font can be changed) and then select the attachment you just uploaded.

thats it you're done.

A request: If you are really interested in helping us help you clear your problems then do the following and don't go in circles by getting confused.

First download the latest BIOS from the link which #Crazy_Eddy has given. Install it using a method which Intel has given in on its website for your motherboard(usually using a pen drive).

It could help by eliminating all your problems of freezing and fans being damaged earlier than normal if its truly a motherboard BIOS issue.

Secondly forget about the multimeter thingy it is not what you are imagining it to be.

Thirdly your powersupply is not a top notch quality powersupply so we can't say its reliable either.

Look at the value i mark in the 2nd picture.

The same value show when i go to bios but after i entered if i stay for 8 to 10 second my computer hang.

Look at diffarent value, I never saw this in my friends pc. there is stable rate of 1800 to 2400 (fan speed at rpm).

Ok I am trying to recover the issue i totally agree with Cooleagle. I download the bios setup which #Crazy_Eddy give me. And

thank you #Crazy_Eddy for give me the link and it is realy easy to install the setup.

But the fan rpm show the same in the bios window as previously shown.The Bellow screen shorts is after update the bios.

You have updated your BIOS but still you are getting incorrect readings of the fan RPMs, so its not a BIOS problem.

I doubt if that's the case but does your processor fan actually stop when the system is being used ?

I think your motherboard needs to be taken to the service center once. From what you said in the first post it seems you bought your computer in 11 Oct, 2009 right ?

If yes then the Intel motherboard usually carries a 3 year warranty which means Oct 2012, but since its a HCL build you'll need to check if it does have a 3 year warranty.

Here's what you need to do, call up HCL and confirm if the motherboard is still under warranty. Alternatively you could take your motherboard to an Intel service center which its nearest to your house and check if it can be replaced/repaired under warranty.

Though I am not sure if you could enter your motherboard's serial number on Intel's website/or call up their call center to confirm if your motherboard its still in warranty by specifying your serial, so you need to check that.

Do update here whatever you do.
