Hi

I am upgrading to the following configuration.

Core i7 860, will prolly use at 3.4GHz
Asus P7P55D Evo
2X2GB DDR3 1600 Dominator
Saphire Radeon HD 5850

I want to know whether it would be possible to run Crysis with everything at V High settings, 0x AA, 16x HQ AF at 1680x1050 or at least 1440x900. By that I mean an average of 50+ FPS and minimum above 30.

From what I have researched. The following cards are exactly one notch above each other which means on an average a performance difference of 20-30% per notch.

With a HD 4850 and Q9550 I can play the game fine at 1440x900 High Shadows Low no AA.

So from this I derive the following conclusions.

4870 1440x900 High Shadows Medium/High

4890 1440x900 V High Shadows Low/Med or at most High

5850 at most 1440x900 max or maybe Shadows Medium/High

And the benchmarks I saw at various websites show similar results. At near max settings at 1680x1050 the 5850 barely gets 30-40 FPS which is low both in terms of FPS and the graphic details.

Are these conclusions correct or will I be able to max it out at 1680x1050 without AA and get good FPS?

What have 5850 owners witnessed themselves in realtime gameplay?

It is about 20-30% faster than a 4890 even according to this review, as I claimed originally.

It will run smooth. Why do you need 50+?
Edit: Hey, why dont you get that old avatar of yours, just for some nostalgia :P

I don't find games such as such FPS and NFS series for instance silky smooth below 50 FPS.

So you need to keep your eyes glued to the FRAPS counter in the corner of your screen to be able to enjoy a game. eh?:rofl:

I can tell the difference in smoothness.

I second that. Even i cant play most F.P.S. or Racing games if the frames per second is less than 50.

Most people here have not compared a FPS or racing game at 50fps vs. same at 70fps. Let me tell you, the difference is big.

Though there are a few exceptions where the game engine plainly sucks and going above 50fps isnt worth the phenomenal effort: GTA 4, Crysis, are a few examples :|

So rite, i agree with your demand and would suggest you HD5850. Though this wont fullfill your demand, but this is the closest you can get in that budget.

Also, i would advice you to try other games in which the game engine is much better. Eg: COD MW2, L4D2, Grid, etc.

ok thanks.

But would it be possible to get a smooth experience in Crysis at 1440x900 MAX no AA even if the FPS are close to 40 FPS?

For instance in UT 3, 40 FPS won't be that smooth. How about Crysis?

When did fps become synonymous with smoothness?I thot it got something to do with change in FPS rather than FPS itself.30-50 is agreeable range but depends on both game and hardware. Some of the games even have FPS capped at 30 by default. If you are bothered by chopiness while gaming, you can always turn on motion blurring and vertical syncing.
Different parts of games are updated in different freq. Take racing, there are options to change freq of reflections and rear views, not to mention in-game physics has its own frequency. game when it plays smooth,it does so in 30 and 60 alike.

i guess he must be using crysis as a benchy for all the other games.. i mean if hes able to play crysis maxout then he can play anygame max out,, but that wouldve been true when crysis launched,, not any more i guess.. but i may be wrong.. maybe he really really loves crysis.... ummm.. as others stated thats a good rig mate.. as long as it doesent drop below 20fps during the most intense firefights, ur good to go, oh btw dont forget a good psu, it can have significant impact on ur components..

Playable Frame rates vary from game to game (even among FPS games). Its not the avg FPS that matters, but rather the deviation from avg FPS. A game that's constantly at 25FPS is more playable than a game that fluctuates between 25 and 50FPS.

Upgrade from Q9550 to lynnfield?
Wait for a while at least till all the dust regarding socket burning is cleared.
Q9550 is awesome.
