Thrombocytopenia is a condition in which the number of Platelets (A type of cell in your blood stream) goes down. The effect of this could be uncontrolled and unwarranted bleeding from various parts of body, excessive fluid collection in lungs, abdominal cavity. Leading to shock and respiratory failure.
The normal range of platelets in your blood is 150000 - 350000. Situation starts becoming alarming once it goes below 50k mark, till then only rest and oral medicines suffice. If it goes below 50k mark you need IV fluids and other medicines and in some cases PRP, FFP, or SDP as per the case may be.
the causes of it are many but in day to day practice you find it common in cases of Malaria, Dengue, Viral Fevers and other Viral infections. The less common conditions like ITP are very less so we should concentrate on the more common diseases first.
What happens if you or your relative suffers from this : Most important things are Rest, Plenty of Fluid intake, Multivitamins, Supportive treatment attending the underlying cause. Most likely you should come back to normal in 6-8 days depending upon the underlying cause. even after count coming back to normal wait for 2 full days before you rejoin your normal work schedule.
