My mom has been admitted into the hospital and she needs blood!!! Pls Help.

Very sad news. Our prayers are with you mate. Wish your mum a speedy recovery. Please do go through the Blood Donor list on TE for help from Mumbai members. Rest assured, you can count on the awesome TE junta to help out fellow members in their hour of need :). Believe me, I have been in a similar situation as yours. And it was the awesome TE junta who helped me out! More info on that can be found here

Will check for more guys in case you ro anyone else needs that blood.

Also tell the Hiranandani Hospital peeps not to act stingy- though the blood type is rare in your case and that maybe a reason.

They can always arrange for blood from another reputed hospital/blood bank- as it is patient has to arrange same no of units to be donated back apart from paying for the units required.

Our office will be having a blood donation drive in collaboration with Hiranandani Hospital, Powai- It's sometime this week or next week IIRC.

Though we should donate blood and there have to be more donors for sure, sometimes these hospital blood banks peeps do tend to act greedy.

She is slowly slowly recovering but she is still in ICU... :( After getting some 30 to 50 thousand plateletes she is feeling a lil' better but she says that she is still feeling weakness...

Not to worry man. She will be fine soon. :)

On a similar note I recall, a colleague and friend of mine was admitted to hospital couple of years back, after he fell sick with malaria which led to Thrombocytopenia, citing very low platelet count. It became dangerously low and his parents had to be rushed to Surat. He wasn't admitted to the ICU however and the count became normal thanks to the medication. Blood transfusion wasn't needed in this case.

@Hades : Nice to hear your mom is recovering. Hope she recovers fast and full.

@Others :
Thrombocytopenia is a condition in which the number of Platelets (A type of cell in your blood stream) goes down. The effect of this could be uncontrolled and unwarranted bleeding from various parts of body, excessive fluid collection in lungs, abdominal cavity. Leading to shock and respiratory failure.

The normal range of platelets in your blood is 150000 - 350000. Situation starts becoming alarming once it goes below 50k mark, till then only rest and oral medicines suffice. If it goes below 50k mark you need IV fluids and other medicines and in some cases PRP, FFP, or SDP as per the case may be.

the causes of it are many but in day to day practice you find it common in cases of Malaria, Dengue, Viral Fevers and other Viral infections. The less common conditions like ITP are very less so we should concentrate on the more common diseases first.

What happens if you or your relative suffers from this : Most important things are Rest, Plenty of Fluid intake, Multivitamins, Supportive treatment attending the underlying cause. Most likely you should come back to normal in 6-8 days depending upon the underlying cause. even after count coming back to normal wait for 2 full days before you rejoin your normal work schedule.

^ any fruits that help in increasing the platelets count? people tend to dislike medicines a lot cause of their effect of making the body weaker.
