CPU/Mobo Need advice upgrading Processor/Motherboard/RAM

Got the Crucial M4 SSD from PrimABGB today. I am completely taken aback by the small size of the thing! Currently checking online tips on how to fit it inside PC case :-)

I tried to buy 'Intel Core i7 2600' but vendor screwed up and is sending 'Intel Core i7 2600K' instead. I guess I will now have to do without exclusive VM features of 2600 processor.

Guys I got screwed! I upgraded my PC this weekend with bought suggested components. While installing Win7's SP1 update, my PC unexpectedly shutted off. I tried restarting 2-3 times but it got shut down within seconds. After that the PC went dead, no fans spinning. Only the motherbaord's green LED remained lit. I tried things like taking out all components and adding them one-by-one but nothing worked. I took out CMOS battery and fitted it again, didn't make any difference. Convinced that my new Intel motherboard was dead, I took out all new components and packed them up (Can green LED light remain lit in a dead motherboard?)
Next I again fitted my old CPU/RAM/Motherboard - to my surprise, it didn't turn on either.
After a few more tries, now the situation is that main power MCB trips as soon as I am connect power to my PC. Does this all indicate that my SMPS has gone bad?
What to do? Should I buy a new SMPS? If yes, please provide suggestions for new SMPS.

What is your current config,Post the details of it.

All evidence points in that direction, I think it is my fault for recommending you to stick with the Corsair CX v2430W.

If you are willing to purchase a new SMPS go for the Seasonic S12II 520W ~4500/-.

Current Config is in initial posts. I replaced all old components with hardware suggested by Alpha17.

Actually my SMPS was the old Cooler Master Real Power 450W. I did not buy any new SMPS though you advised me to. Is it possible that new hardware somehow "strained" my old SMPS? Seems very unlikey!
I will now have to buy a new SMPS anyway since this old SMPS is short-circuiting the mains power line when connected. So your advice is -Seasonic S12II 520W?
I just hope my MB & CPU haven't been damaged due to this.

Yes,You and @chiragsthakur should've suggested a new PSU considering CM PSU's past performances though without gpu it got wacked is a little surprise rshri you'd get Seasonic S12ii 520W as you'll add GPU later any how.

Hmmm... yes now I recall that the SMPS was the older ATX v2.2 while current generation SMPS fall in the purview of the ATX v2.3.

I recommend that you go for the Seasonic S12II 520W and hoping that no other component got fried save the SMPS. Cheerio!

Dont judge by reputation, see the technical aspect, for a random failure of cms power supply doesnt necessarily mean it was a bad supply that op had. Even an old psu from corsair can go bad. Its electronics, the mtbf calculations can go wrong sometimes.

@op : did u check ur smps by shorting the green and black wires? Just to make sure that the smps is now eligible to be scraped

Yes i did say it was a surprise it happened.I've seen this happen in recent times,Old PSU's going kaput after connecting to new rig,I had told you about a friend earlier last month who's solid VX450 gone kaput after connecting to his new rig without the gpu.

Thanks for the comments, guys! I am planning to buy referred Seasonic SMPS today. BTW, I have noticed that now nobody says SMPS, people call it PSU now :-) Is this something that has gradually happened in past 6-7 years? Boy, do I feel old :-)
@Jakob - I didn't test my old SMPS by shorting green-black wire, I dont have ceramic resistor required to do that testing. But since SMPS is shortcircuiting, I am assuming its a goner anyway.

You dont need any ceramic resistor to do the test. Just a string of wire is enough

Received the Seasonic s12II 520W PSU today. Will connect to my setup and test the old Mobo/Processor/RAM first thing tomorrow. After I am convinced that everything is working fine, will re-assemble the new components. I am still nervous that I might have damaged my new motherboard and processor in this mishap. Hoping that things will be fine.
I was mistakenly assuming Seasonic S12II to be a modular power supply, but its a normal one. Doesn't matter to me though.

Guys, I am pleased to inform you that after installing Seasonic s12II 520W this weekend, everything worked correctly. I am about to finish off with software/apps setup in my new setup. Speed is now unbelievably great! Everything is magically instantaneous! I thank you from my bottom of my heart for invaluable advice and suggestions! Cheers!
