Locals are kannadiga's they speak kannada ;)

..doesn't this happen just about anywhere in the country, locals speaking their lingo ?

^ South Indian food is available in Mumbai but quality is not good :( ... I was in Hyderabad and South Indian food was too good as compared to Mumbai. Of course I didn't try much here to find South Indian food :p

Is it possible to find 1 BHK fully/semi furnished upto 6k in Bangalore? Of course away from Whitefield. I don't mind a place away from office but at least common things for living should be available :)

Then we grew, and the cops could not keep up with the increased crime and nobody wants to increase taxes so we kinda gave up after that.
LOL Bangalore has almost the highest taxes and still we cant keep up ......I feel this is because of the mindset of the Police Administration...they dont want increase their effort. Can't we have private police and throw all these ppl out of job. There will be lakhs of youth ppl and private sector ready to do that at much lower overall cost and corruption :p.......the traffic police in Bangalore are the most corrupt ones for sure compared to other parts of India. In fact they are worse than the thugs auto drivers....can you imagine !

Can someone tell me which volvo I should take to get to mount carmel college from Forum mall? A friend of mine is wasting 200 rs a day on auto and is desperately hunting for a bus of some sort.

No man, the place just exploded in the last 15 years, 60% of this city is ppl not from here if that means anything.

Private cops ? heh, next thing we will have is gang warfare here :O

At least the police are answerable to the public, to whom exactly would private cops be answerable to ?

@offtopic:

I have seen in many places where guys from outside south India (especially those from Delhi) complaining that the girls here are not hot! Can someone clarify what do they mean by that? Is it because the gir'ls here (in South) dress nicely while these so called hot ones show good amount of their body? Or are you implying something else? Don't get me wrong, but I am a little annoyed in this case. And yes, I have never been outside South India.

@ blr_p : South Indian food is terrible in Mumbai. :ashamed: The worst thing which is kinda omnipresent is the sweet sambhar :S My home town Amritsar

has way better south Indian joints and the Dosas and Uttapams are amazing. Ironically Pune has some way better South Indian joints.

@Unni: Tough to clarify. Its not just the clothes but the relative open-minded-ness, friendly-ness. No need to feel annoyed. Its a relative comparison and

not absolute by any means. More over its more quantitative than qualitative. :)

Pretty much sums up Bangalore nicely.

A quick note on public transport - Buses are comfortable if you want to go the few places covered by the Volvos. The Volvos are quite costly though. Buying petrol for a car is cheaper than buying 2 Volvo tickets. Regular bus connectivity is poor, unless you are headed towards the Kempegowda Bus Stand. The bus services stop rather early too. Regular bus tickets are costlier than buying petrol for your bike.

Earlier thread on power cuts in Bangalore - http://www.techenclave.com/general-talk/how-many-hours-power-cut-your-172749.html. The worst is over I think. Havent had a power cut in the last week.

Some general advice - Leave your linguistic and culinary baggage at home when you move out. Be willing to blend in with the local population. Dont expect to be treated well if you arent willing to blend in. If you want the comforts of your mother tongue and north indian food, you are much better off staying where you are.

hehee.. I feel your pain on the subject of south indian food in Mumbai.
99% of south indian food in Bombay is what is known as Udupi style food. You'll find places with names like Madras cafe, but they'll still be serving udupi style food. The sweet sambar is a trademark of theirs..

LOL I dont like this outsider/insider concept at all. Its a damn country that we stay in....when the older residents terms ppl coming here as outsiders...its really unfortunate. And ya its the common attitude of most of the older educated residents here. I dont see such strong feeling elsewhere at least among the educated middle class folks. And ya if this continues ppl will move out...industries will also follow ! Thats how new cities/locations come up :p......hospitality is one of the main factor which attracted economy to Bangalore and this is what is lacking most now :(

And instead of private police we can have something like Karnataka Police will work in AP/TN for 3 years ....then in some other state. All India Roaming Police Force

What about english tho ?

Otherwise, its like being with the french. Speak their lingo and they welcome you like a long lost relative, fail to do so however and you quickly become some wierd foreigner

Ppl here like to pride themselves that this is a cosmopolitan place, if so ppl from anywhere ought to be able to blend it without too much effort, that to me is the definition of cosmopolitan. Nothing will ever beat mumbai for this.

I get the impression its easier for southerners to migrate north than the other way around

@blr_p the sambhar was sweet because its perfect udupi style.I digg that sambhar
Thing is i never got udipi style sambhar wherever i was so its the non-sweet you get with a thaali that i got used to and consider as 'normal' sambhar ie sour-ish rather than sweet.

So is that the Andhra or Tamilian way of doing it ?

I think thats the default taste you will get here unless you expressly go to a udipi style restaurant.

Don't take it the wrong way because thats not how i intended it. I don't think many ppl dislike others coming here, more the merrier :)

When we whine about it being crowded its mainly the BMP they are blaming for a lack of planning vision. We want to grow but are being constrained from doing so. The frickin metro should have been operational more than ten years ago !!

I like this idea but feel its more practical in the north than in the south given the different languages. Beat cops have to be from the area concerned, the ones behind a desk however can be from anywhere.

Seeing is believing. No amount of words can do justice to what's different. Unless you visit and stay there for a short duration, you will not in all likelihood realise the difference. And your perception of 'hot' being defined by skin show is both outdated and cliched. There is more to a person than just looks.

I never interacted with a girl outside of south. So, can't say much. But I think they are friendly enough. They can be naughty too as I have heard quite a few times from my friends.

That's exactly my point. When you yourself agree that "there is more to a person than just looks", why complain? Please clarify what you meant by this "you will not in all likelihood realise the difference"? What differences?

The only difference I see between the local girls and those who come from elsewhere is their style of dressing. Everywhere I see, the girls from other states do show more skin (read more fashionable) and are more noisy in buses :). So, naturally, I am inclined to thinking as being "hot" meaning more skin show, at least from a guys point of view. I think we have lot of words in English to describe a lady nicely and I am sorry, but 'hot' isn't one for me.

Just do a Google image search for 'hot girl' if you don't believe me. :)

Please note: I do not want to get into a fight here. I would want somebody to correct me also if I am wrong in saying any of these.

My thoughts about Bangalore:

Traffic is really really bad, and they have lot of humps in roads. Power cut is a huge problem. I never faced any problem with language till now. You can manage with bit of English and Hindi in most occasions.

Hot to me has nothing to do with how much 'skin' is revealed but rather to do with how attractive the face and/or body figure is. Figures are more promininet the tighter fitting the clothes happen to be.

Quite frankly i've not seen anything that qualifies much as hot here at all, compared to say abroad and i'm referring to Asians (from the subcontinent) here ;)

Mannerisms, strength of mind, confidence levels etc. Put a South Indian girl in UP, and a North Indian girl in Chennai or Bangalore, and the way they would go about helping themselves would bring out a few things.

yes but they insist on speaking even if they know that the other person does not understand , here in hyderabad ,most of the locals speak hindi and not stick to speaking in telugu
