Need Help Setting Up an NVR Security System + Suggestions for Buying Parts

Hi everyone,I’m planning to set up an budget friendly NVR-based security system for my home and need some advice. I don't have a concrete idea about the components I need or where to buy them at reasonable prices.
Here’s my plan:
  • Installing at least 4 cameras (2 outdoors) to cover entry points, outdoor spaces, and the main hall, with plans to upgrade later.
  • I want a HDD that can store 14 days of footage.
  • Not sure what camera specs (resolution, FoV, etc.) or features (night vision, AI detection) I should prioritize.
  • I don’t know any reliable sources for quality parts at fair prices. Local retailers in my city quote absurdly high prices and often overcharge.
Questions I have:
  1. Which NVR brands/models are beginner-friendly yet reliable?
  2. What features should I look for in cameras?
  3. How do I calculate storage capacity for 4-6 cameras running 24/7?
  4. Any tips on cable management and camera placement?
  5. Where can I buy these components at fair prices? Any trusted online stores or retailers in Tamil Nadu (or nearby)?
If you’ve set up an NVR system before, please share your recommendations or experiences. Links to helpful guides are also welcome!

Would love a similar setup if anyone can suggest parts? I already have the storage server and a proxmox running HA.

Do you mind software NVR on a computer?
The features you need to decide based on where the cameras will be, the resolution will decide whether you will need 3TB HDD or till 10TB for 14 Days (if 24x7 recording)

Just saw this post. I have this exact same setup at my home!

I'm not sure if you've already made the purchases or if you're still looking for suggestions, since this post is quite old now.
If you are, do let me know.

Hello there, thanks for coming forward to help!
I've already purchased a setup and it's working great.

I went with Prama Hikvision
Hikvision is top tier! No wonder it's working great.

For anyone coming across this later, you cannot go wrong with either Hikvision or Dahua. There are only some minor differences: Hikvision cameras have better support, quality, and resolution, while Dahuas are better in low light/night vision, and are relatively more affordable.

That said, I've been meaning to talk with someone who has an Omada or Ubiquiti CCTV setup. Hikvision/Dahua have great cameras, but their software can be a bit lacking. Wonder if these network-first manufacturers provide a better experience (probably won't be as affordable though).

Please DM me where you got the Dahua setup
