Need tips/guidelines to buy a washing machine!!

we just got a new washing machine 2-3 weeks ago.

okay heres what i learnt.

1. front loading machines wash clothes better and can take in hot water. top loading machines may not wash as good as front loading ones. top loading machines cant take in hot water.

2. front loading consumes much more electricity. they generally require 1kw of power whereas top loading machines need around 400w.

3. front loading requires less amount of water compared to top loading ones.

4. front loading ones make more noise due to the belt driven drum. top loading machines dont make as much noise since they are direct driven. however i have seen only 1 direct driven front loading machine. it was an imported lg direct drive but was expensive like around 45k.

5. front loading machines are much more expensive.

6. you cant remove the clothes from front loading once the machine cycle starts since the lid gets locked and have to wait only till whole cycle gets completed. you can remove clothes in top loading machine.

well, top loading machine was a no brainer for us. though hot water cant be used, but still considering other things, we went for top loading. if you are going for top loading, go for national/panasonic. i have heard very good things about the quality. panasonic machines have very few complaints and if any the ASS is pretty good. we got a 7kg not-so-fancy fully automatic model for around 18k from vijay sales (15.5k after exchange).

hope that helps

Good O/T Sarang. :P

This thread just became interesting. :P
@ adder- banging leg on open door and kids getting inside and giving themselves a tumble bath.
I think ia m beginning to like front loading ones- quite exciting to use.

@viralbug: i thought front loader consumed lesser electricity, as they operate half cycles, half cycle rotates the tub and the gravity takes it down. So effective consumption is lower, (source wikipedia).

Front loaders dont "Take" hot water, they have heater inbuilt and you can control/let machine control the water temperature.

Front loaders use less than 1kW, I will post the power numbers from my machine in the evening.

And top loaders come with the heater too these days.

Havent noticed any difference in the noise levels between front and top loaders.

Front loaders are about 15% costlier than similar top loading models.

This is the only major gripe with front loaders.

not quite theres usually a drain button/rotary control to specify drain action. so you can technically remove clothes even between wash cycles.

:Curious: Why would you want to do that?

actualy newer top loaders does have a heater in them, and about front loaders consuming more power only if set the temperature,if u use cold water mode it barely consumes around 300watts or so.
well if u take a look at whirlpolol professional series of washing machines they are very very quiet and some samsung models they are very quiet, and that LG model that costs 45k is because it drys clothes 100% since it has a heater as well.
siemens washing machines are one of the quietest .
well u can remove clother is front loadind washing machines by putting it into drain mode.

about the electricity usage, well even i had read that front loading consumes less energy. but when i checked the ratings i found out the opposite.

yeah i think some new models of top loading have heater, but very few. i hardly saw maybe 1 or 2.

again about the drain mode, quite a few machines dont have that.

nope it wasnt a machine+dryer. it was expensive because it was a direct drive.

my neighbour has a front loading machine, i think its an lg. it does make more noise than my machine.

i would say if you are looking for something lighter on the pocket, top loading is good. but instead of buying an expensive TL, a FL is better. each have their own problems and advantages.

Every front loader will make more & more noise when its older... Drum + Shaft + Bearings all gets worn out every 2-3 years... So high maintenance.... But still I prefer them over TL 'coz of wash quality....

well the only models price at around 45k in LG website are washer+dryer models, maybe u didnt notice that.

I currently have a Toshiba 7 KG top loader. Didn't like the fact that you have to keep bending to put clothes inside a front loader. Top loaders are easier on your back !

In case theres a power cut I can manually wash/dry the clothes. Some front loading machines require a pump to drain the water, which wont work during a power cut.

Heres the power consumption from my Whirlpool front loader

Wash - 315W
Spin - 750W
Heater - 1700W (Max power; shuts down after the set temp is reached)

Raghu.

ok guys just checked the water consumption of my whirlpool professional series SUD701 WM.
now when manufactures say that a washing machines is a 7kg load ,they mean its the maximum u can put,but that 7kg load is only possible if u put cotton clothes,if u put some synthetic clothes the maximum u can put is just 3kg,since the volume occupied by synthetic and other material are much higher.

anyway i put a load occuping 70%+ of the volume in a 7kg WM ,the material of the laundry is not cotton, they were curtain,no idea whats the exact material, for the wash cycle it took less then 4 litres of water(in otherwords less then 4 litres of water came from drain pipe) ,it perfomed 3 rinse cycles ,i measured the water that came out of drain piple till the 3rd/final rinse cycle, the bucket had a reading marked upto 25litres ,the water occupied upto to 22 litres for(1wash+2 rinse cycle) ,it still had one more rinse cycle for which around 9 litres of water came out of the drain pipe,so for 1wash+3 rinse cycle a total of approximately 31litres + or - 10%. i didnt measure the water that came out of the lenghty spin cycle but it couldnt have been more then 3 litres, since most of the water was already drained since each rinse cycle comes with a free brief spin(anywhere from 400 to 1200 rpms, depending on what u choose)

my wirlpool top loader SS drum has busted its valve 3 times in last 4 years... ass is good but i had to extend maintance contract to 5 yr which almost equaled to price of the machine

Get a front loader. Determine the wash capacity needed. Get what fits in your budget from the following list (best companies first)

1) Siemens, Panasonic, Bosch (available here?)
2) IFB
3) Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Onida, Haier

well out the companies available in india the washing machines that have realy good build quality are whirpool and siemens, with IFB the worst of the lot.

If ur done with all these, go to a showroom, get a samsung top loader, been using top loaders for long at our house..Its simple and gets the work done, best for bai's and servants, put clothes like u do in a bucket, press start and ur done..
