so i have been eyeing Viewsonic G-Tablet for a while now and just when I find one at a decent price, all my folks in US go AWOL.

i have been using aramex couriers for cellphones so far, but can't for this..
reason: 15% customs duty on Tablets..

I need help from someone who is travelling back to india before april and carry this along.

Or please let me know how to trick customs into believing this to be just a big cellphone :P

I was not sure if this thread is appropriate so i had not posted it so far on TE. But now im left with very limited chanced to get that deal through if i dont do so soon. Yes, i'm desperate.

pleas PM me if you can help. :)

You are going my way... :P

BTW, it can be imported as a phone... unless Aramex is a stickler to Customs norms...

If your seller mentions it as a cellular phone device on the invoice, it shouldn't be a problem IMHO.

Whoa... Wait... Does the VS Tab even accept SIM cards??

UPDATE:

Got 2 friends.

1 of them is carrying and iPhone4 and an evo4G + iPad already.

i'm afraid he will be charged for electronics above total value 25k.

I have offered to pay duty for cellphones that he is carrying..lets see.

another guy is carrying 2 phones and a camera.

how much is duty on cameras?

^^Cant that guy carry camera as personal in-use thing and not as a brand new one ?
yes he can carry all those as personal thing but is paranoid and so am i. yes you have caught me, im a custom duty virgin. :P

Also carrying two phones (without box) can be done as many people now a days do have 2 phones for personal use. May be he can say, one is official phone and one personal.

i anyways have offered to pay duty on phones otherwise.

the 2nd guy seems to carry only 1 phone n camera.

need to know duty on cameras just in case.

i have told him to get it anyways..

lets see whether he is fine with that. :)

i guess there's no limit on the number of mobiles one can carry.. i had carried 3.. :P

though tablet can be a different issue altogether.. just remove the packaging as someone said and if asked, tell them u bought it in India itself.. :P

not available in india :P

but i guess they wont care as long as the person says it's his personal belonging.

hoping that the person is up for it.

else i dont mind paying custom duty as a last resort, it would be twice the amount i would pay for shipping but very less i can do to avoid that anyways.

Get an invoice from a Indian shop with serial no. of the item that you purchased and dated 1-2 month back (or better design an invoice yourself ;) ). Mail to your friend. I think Customs will be satisfied.

But fooling Customs a Tablet as a phone is impossible.

That's why I ended my search for the G tab :( .

lol.. i had bought 2 lappies from UK while i was returning to India.. got caught up by the custom officer.. one was the MB (purchased in India) and the other one was packard Bell (purchased in UK).. he asked me whats wid 2 lappies.. i said " uncle, i did purchase my lappies from India itself".. he asked me are these manufactured here.. i replied.. u kiddin me right.. :P
he then asked for bill.. i replied (makin a puppy face) why wud i carry my bill everytime i go to other country.. its in Pune.. he analysed the lappies.. and then let me go.. :P

^^ Same with me. I had two lappies when i was returning from China but in my case, one was official and one was personal. The custom officer told me in any condition two lappies is not allowed but i insisted it is fine if one is official and one personal. I also showed them proof of the official laptop and also carried the taobao (ebay like site in china) listing of personal to show them it valued under 25k INR.
He did not argue and left me.
Best part is he never noticed other things like eaget m880 media player, portable media player, my camera and tons of chargers for each of the gadgets :P

i'm taking notes of how to handle situations with custom officials :P

helpful so far.

carrying an invoice for something purchased in india while returning to india maynot be a smart thing even if it was true. the cover blows the act :P

hahah.. nah.. sometimes the custom authorities don't even bother to check the luggage.. out of the three times i visited India, twice i was not screened.. or maybe i was lucky :P
