Yes this has been confirmed on XS from a Intel Employee

XtremeSystems Forums - View Single Post - No overclocking for mainstream Nehalem?

I believe this article is true. It's not that Intel won't support overclocking because it is being locked out after the fact. The way the mainstream Lynnfield/Havendale designs are setup they have no northbridge to do the clock splitting. There most likely will be a locked multiplier on the chip, but it's probably going to be based directly off the clock started on the clock generator. I believe the only way to alter the operating frequency of the mainstream CPU's will be to alter the frequency of the clock generation IC, and that will mess with many other things.

The high end chips will have a northbridge that sets interconnect speed (Tylersburg) and that will be a lever for people to alter the clock frequency that the CPU is based off of.

This is from a old thread on XS but it came up at EOC, confirming my earlier thoughts, and this tech info kind of supports it!

I hope AMD has some good procy's coming up cause thats where my money is going the next time .

I guess days when people could buy a low end chip and overclock it to high end and beyond are gone for intel!

Fudzilla - Intel to drop overclocking for mainstream Nehalems

but then the performance of nehalems are revolutionary even without overclocking right.. ?

I'd say Nehlam is an evolution not really a revolution, its about 50% faster most times (averaging) clock per clock. So a 3.2ghz Penryn <= 2.66ghz Nehlam.

Mainstream parts would be expensive for some time however, its definitely a big step ahead, but then Its going to be very shabby of intel to be doing this, I'm sure AMD must be getting somewhere near this if not faster and as we have seen with Amd's vfm performance from the 4000 Series, I'm hoping a shift would take place with Nehlam. Its just like Nvidia was expected to give out huge performance with the GT200, and ATI spoiled the party!

Go Dammit!! :hap2:

Arrrey this's true; mainstream platforms wont be OC'able as me n Lord nemesis said yest;

Its only the Bloomfield which can be OC'able which's the extreme enthusiast platform;

Is there still a confusion imax??

No not really buddy, was trying to clarify and expand the info I had! So I guess bloomfield will be the enthusiastic platform with EE pricing I guess.. ouch :Comp3:

Naa, not around the USD1000 mark, I'm pretty sure on that; :D

Maybe the processor will be priced around the E6600 price when the Conroes were launched; like 500USD; :D

Count on it; :)

Are you sure about it? I would think the reason intel is going with this policy is because they want to juice out consumers. I'm just speculating that Extremes will retain their price.

I'm guessing you got some info :P , c'mon c'mon spit it out! ;)

Who me?? :O

Nope messa no Intel employee; heh he; :lol:

Those're speculations; too good to be true; :)

I hope they can be true, either that or AMD kicks some intel butt this time :rofl: haha

Yeah I remember the AthlonXP times; :'(
I mean seriously with the turn around we have seen with ATI 4000 series, especially knowing that ATI publicly spoke that they are out of the high end market, I really believe that AMD will come back strongly in the procy market soon!

E6600 for $500 :O

Me, Chaos and other guys here got ours for some 15k with local warranty around 12 days after the worldwide launch.

Hmm but I remember the launch price in India was close to these aint?? :S

E6300 - 12k;

E6400 - 14k;

E6600 - 18k;

E6700 - 23k;

The Q6600 retailed for 52k at that time; :P

Here check Kid0's price for a 2nd hand E6600 during Feb 2007: http://www.techenclave.com/market/fs-intel-core2duo-e6600-l629b-87055.html

Kido was charging a premium for that stepping, Read Vivek Punjabi's post, he says current market price was 15.7k

I'm sure I didn't pay more than 16k. And anyways, 18k is not = $500 bro! ;)

OMG I get it Anish!! :lol:

But I remember the launch pricing to be somewhere close to that; And these didn't launch in Feb 2007 AFAIK; ;)

Nice idea by intel to make sure nobody enjoys the overclocking headroom without paying a premium. Pushing overclockers to the limit again :P

2nd Thought : Where's Bulldozer ?

Though Intel is saying its about the architechture...but if they can implement FSB clocking on the enthusiast segment, they cud have done it in the mainstream segment as well.....Yeah i guess its all a way to ask for premium for overclocking component and I hope AMD kicks on Intel's nuts as well...
We have an AMD engg. in our forum, who was testin AMD's unreleased quad's a few days back...will check with him about its performance.....
