well i am having a weird problem with vista. everything seems to be working ok but the net is just working too slowly compared to windows xp. am using dual boot.

msn messenger wont even connect. google talk connects. browsing is extremely slow. te or thl or erodov takes atleast 15seconds to open. no idea what the issue is. when i reboot into xp the connection is fine.

os = vista ultimate x64 & windows xp x64
net = exatt 256k

for config you can check the signature below.

any help or inputs are welcome.

that's strange... my vista x64 works fine... dual booting with xp mce2005... i max out my connection speeds for torrent downloads and usenet downloads as well...

maybe you wanna download updated vista x64 drivers for your onboard mobo devices?

also try disabling any firewalls and anti virus software, and see if your speeds improve...

Try shutting off the windows firewall. see if that makes any difference.
Btw just ping google.com from xp and 64, see if the time is nearly same or different.

mobo drivers are latest, have installed latest nforce drivers for mobo & the lan card. have already tried disabling firewall & antivirus but no luck.

for checking pings i had tried speedtest.net, both xp & vista had similar ping to the server i tested. but browsing is extremely slow & so are downloads.

torrent downloads are around 5-10kb in vista where as they max out at 30-32kb in xp. did not try http downloads but they too will be slow as the browsing is extremely slow.

dont know whats wrong. will try updating vista by doing autoupdate & see if that helps, but it will prolly take ages to download the autoupdates.

Dns issues maybe, but dont think thatz related to slow speeds in torrent.

Cant think of any other reason.

hmm...quite similar to my problem.

do you use 24 Online?

Check what ports your Browsers,clients etc etc use ( compare them with XP)

If could be that ur ISP or Cablewallah is blocking ports.

I had the same problem and once i figued what ports most internet apps used i told him to unblock the ports(range) and nets been running fine evr since...

If ISP is blocking ports, then it is OS independent. He shud be facing the same problem in both OS.

Must be buggy OS (Vista) as suggested by evox.

Ya tht is wht i told him to check the ports used in Vista.

for eg : in XP all my net softwares were in the 1K range ( 1023,25 etc)

in vista it was in the 49K range.

cablewallah unblocked the 49-50K range and net was just fine after that.

(this is the reason he gave me :))

am using regular pppoe for logging in. no 24online here.

ok i did somethings. everything seems to be working perfect now. only problem is that msn is not logging in. its giving error code 8100306. on top of that even MSN.com isnt opening. rest everything is back to normal like xp. torrent speeds are 25- 30k.

i removed all the unwanted things from startup, disabled windows defender, in network changed the ip to automatic detect, changed lan card settings to 10mb full duplex.

everything is normal except this msn now. googletalk works properly.

can anyone check this error on the msn site & tell me what it is.

p.s - even microsoft.com isnt opening. lol

I had this similar problem..wherein every other site used to open except for anything owned by microsoft. None of the Microsoft related domains were reachable...even Windows Update couldn't work!

After breaking my head over it, I managed to trace the problem to the Network/LAN card drivers. Th only solution is to re-install Vista and to used Vista's in-build default Network/LAN Card driver...the moment you install any other Network/Lan driver (even your vendor's drivers), all the Microsoft related domains stops working :(

that is a really weird issue if its the network driver issue. its strange that only ms related sites are not loading. will try uninstalling & reinstalling drivers etc tonight n see.

did anyone check that error code?
