Hello There,

I have 5 yrs old Segate 20GB and enough for me. But since last 2year it's starts

producing sound like grinding whenever I start PC. It also make sound same when antivirus ready to dwonload update files and same if I open programs like Adobe Photoshop or other big one.

No problem of bad sectors, once on 45/50 days defrag it.

Is this indicates any serious problem to HDD, any software to make it silent.

Or shall I purchse new Segate Barcuda as my vendor ready to pay me Rs.1000 for this old one?

Any other suggestion.

Thank You

A grinding sound generally indicates a hard disk waiting to fail !

If your dealer is offering you 1K for it, jump on it - its a very good price for an old 20GB disk :)

Hi Eddy,

Can you please Recommend me a nice longlife error free HDD. And what other features should I look in.

I am not a computer techi so suggest me which one best available today and at what price should I go for. 40 GB is more than enough for me.

Thanks for Alerting me:(

Western Digital and Maxtors (Make sure u get the originals)
The new Seagate's arent bad either.

Can you please give Model Nos. so I can not get cheat by Dealer.:S

By Orignal Do you Mean to ask for Warranty Card and Pakka Bill?

Can you give me estimate mkt. rates of each one?

Which one is Best ? :S My requirement is not much space !

Western Digital
Maxtor
Seagate

Thank You Gold

I would personally recommend the Seagate Barracuda. Performance is quite good, and they back it up with a 5 yr warranty which none of the other manufacturers do.

A 40GB model is around ~ 2300

An 80GB model is around ~ 2600.

Not too sure about exact model number. One thing you could do is ask your dealer for the model numbers on the Hard disks he is offering, and check up on it at the Seagate website - that would clarify what drive you're getting.

I would say, spring for the 80GB model, as its only 300 bucks more.

No Mangesh, what i mean to say is that there are a lot of Fake MAxtors floating around. Get the original ones only!

Not sure about model no. Just get the latest.

I dont bother too much about my hard disks except for the space / speed and cache. 250gb/7200.7 rpm/8mb here :E.

Check the Sept 2005 issue of CHIP thay have reviewed HDDs and in the list is a Hitachi 80GB 8mb cache SATA2 5 year warranty drive price mentioned is 3000/-

Seagate have a Mumbai contact number 022-2628 6678

As per the Seagate website, none of the Ultra ATA 80GB Hard disk drives come with 8MB cache. They only have 2MB cache.

Only the SATA versions of the disk come with an 8MB cache.

Does your motherboard have SATA ports ?

Thank You Eazy and Eddy,

Now please suggest me for which HDD Brand should I go, as I already mentioned I have very less or no knowledge about HDD.

Hitachi or Seagate

Thank You,

^ It depends on whether your present motherboard has SATA ports.

What motherboard are you using / are you aware if it has SATA ports? :)

Eddy,

My MOBO is Intel D845 GVSR (No Sata Support). Vendor offer me to make my MOBO sata enable using some Peripherals cost Rs.1500/- is it advisable?

Also in search for 2Fan SMPS, my vedor say there is no SMPS have 2 fans. Can you please tell me Where can I go for 2 Fan SMPS and at What minimal Price, in Mumbai.

I guess what he means is giving you a SATA controller PCI card to plug onto your motherboard. In my opinion, its not really worth going to that extent as performance difference wont be much between SATA and PATA. If its ok with you , you could just opt for a PATA hard disk. Of course, the PATA hard disk doesnt come with the 8MB cache. You would be fine with a Seagate disk, as i'm not aware of Hitachi's offerings in the PATA segment.

Whenever you next upgrade, you could pick up a SATA enabled mobo then.

About the SMPS, why are you particular about a 2 fan SMPS ? The Powersafe SMPS's have 2 fans. A 400W model is around ~ 1.4K when I last heard.

Eddy & Friends,

Seagare Have following, is it suitable to my MOBO Intel D845 GVSR (No SATA)

Model Number : ST3120026A

Capacity:120 GB

Speed:7200 rpm

Seek time:8.5 ms avg

Interface:Ultra ATA/100

7,200 RPM desktop performance and 8MB cache

Can any one suggest at what price should I go for it?

There is 2 types in 80 GB HDD at Segate Site :

One is

Barracuda 7200.7 - ST380011A and other

Barracuda 7200.7 - ST380013A

I didn't find any diffrence as per Seagate Specification.

Can any one tell me why seagate need to give 2 diffrent numbers for same feature HDD?

Thank You.
