The definitive Ninja Gaiden Σ/Σ2 thread!

Alright we do not have a thread for the 2 kick ass games, so here's one. :)

I had played the good old 8-bit arcade version of the Ninja Gaiden when I was a kid and it used to be one of the hard games back then. The game spans across several levels with boss fights at the end of it.

Come the 6th and 7th generation game consoles and we have Tecmo/Team Ninja develop the Ninja Gaiden and the Ninja Gaiden Black for the Xbox and X360. Insanely hard, this is not the usual hack and slash genre where you could get away with button mashing. The 2 games were ported to the PS3 by the same team as Ninja Gaiden Sigma (abb. NGS) and NGS 2.

I started off with NGS last weekend and I've got to admit it, this is by far the hardest game I have played on any platform at the normal difficulty setting. Irrespective of the block and parry techniques, the enemies keep spawning one after the other, they can very well block all the slashes and even counter-attack! WTH?! Not to mention the bosses are very hard - esp. the first one at the training level!

After reaching the 3rd level - the airship, the final boss - a big fat ass guy with the plasma gun in his hand, I thought I would give up after having fought nearly endless times with this guy. When I gave up and chose to quit, the difficulty toned down to the Ninja Dog mode and things were a bit easier henceforth.

Progressed to the 18th level. And then you have a boss battle, once she's beaten, you have another one. This is getting very very hard. I could not manage my health potions either. I have a full potion and a rice ball given by Ayana.

This game I believe runs at 720p but the graphics look choppy - more like the GOW collection. The videos are rendered well though. NGS 2 OTOH, has a beautiful port with few options added and deleted compared to NG Black for the X360. There's even an option to jiggle 'you-know-what'! loads of primary weapons like the usual katanas, dual-katanas, war hammer, nunchuk, staffs and secondary weapons include shurikens, incendiary shurikens, arrows, smoke bombs and so forth.

If someone has played these titles or are playing them, please put forth your views. :)

Re: The definitive Ninja Gaiden Σ/Σ2 thread!

I must be the only one playing the game in a reverse order. I have never played the original Ninja Gaiden Black which was an Xbox exclusive. My first brush with this series was directly on the 360 with Ninja Gaiden II. I knew it was difficult and had seen it getting flanked for it's poor camera angles and off screen attacks. I completed that game on 'Path of Acolyte' difficulty as 'Path of the Warrior' proved way too difficult with in-numerous amount of enemies spawning in it.

I now have Ninja Gaiden Sigma on the PS3 for more than a month and a half now, but only just started playing the game religiously (backlog's a b**ch!). I'm currently on chapter 9 'Hidden Underground' and so far I like a few things, but hate a lot others. It's insanely difficult and the variation in boss difficulties is just ridiculous. I haven't switched to the Ninja Dog mode yet, despite the number of re-tries that I had to do in this game.

It's challenging for sure, but after playing Ninja Gaiden II, I miss the Eclipse Scythe. That was my favourite weapon and one which proved to inflict a massive damage on the enemies. For Sigma, I'm sticking with only Dragon Claw & Tiger Fang. It's not as fast as the Dragon Sword but proves to be of great use with it's complex attacks. The camera is seriously messed up and god knows why they fail to fix it. Not to mention, enemy re-spawn, another annoying ordeal. There are no checkpoint saves, so if you don't save at the dragon state and die, you continue from the last statue that you saved at.

I had to learn this the hard way yesterday. I managed to beat Gamov after a lot of difficulty using Rachel and completed chapter 8. As soon as I got to chapter 9, I took control of Ryu and accidentally jumped to my death. So this game threw me back to the last save, which was just before fighting the last boss in Chapter 8, AGAIN! WTF? :@

Anyway, I feel it's a good game, but Ninja Gaiden II has a better edge over it. :)

Re: The definitive Ninja Gaiden Σ/Σ2 thread!

Ah Gamov and his shooting skillz. LOL!

He's an easy boss and yeah a lot many easy bosses as well further ahead but the last levels throw up an insane amount of bosses with no save points or the Muramasa statue so you are pretty much left on your own.

Yesterday night I was on Level 18 and the Ultimate Alma appears with Ryu on a move-able platform and then she spawns a boss with skulls all over once she's defeated. Oh well, before this you need to prove your talent and beat the one that guards the hell but in order to face him, you have 2 bosses before him and some minions that spawn between these bosses. Oh well. :P

So you finally got your hands on these games. :P

Not sure about Sigma 2, but Sigma can run natively at 1080p. Its not much of a graphics intensive game. After all its a port of a game from previous gen (XBOX) with better graphics and toned down difficulty. Even NG2 on XBOX 360 is based on an updated version of the same engine that was used for XBOX, Graphically even Sigma looks better than NG2 on XBOX 360. NGS2 is even better visually, but one of the main things missing is the gore present in NG2.

At first, I couldn't figure out his attack pattern. He is great at defensive moves as he is in offence. So I exhausted a lot of healing items. But when I got thrown back again, I studied his moves and then found out the easiest way to beat him down.

Re: The definitive Ninja Gaiden Σ/Σ2 thread!

^Use very less potions Ally. I urge you to practice this since the last stage leaves you with practically no potions when you face the final boss.

I'll try to do that Gannu. I'm not sure how much luck I'll have doing that, but some boss fights just mandate you exhaust pretty much every last ounce of your vital potions. :(

Have you defeated the final boss? How many 'Elixir of Spiritual Life' and 'Great Spirit Elixir' did you have when you got to that point?

Re: The definitive Ninja Gaiden Σ/Σ2 thread!

^Not yet. You see the final boss is in level 19. Before that there's Ultimate Alma and her skeleton form you need to beat. Successively i.e. This is getting hard. I almost did that when that stupid skull comes out of the form and comes to chop you. :(

Here's where I'm stuck ATM. All I have is 3 bosses to be done with.

Besides, another advantage in Ninja Dog mode is that Ayane gifts you with rice-balls or the Talisman of Rebirth (random!) when you die. Lol isn't that the ultimate pwnage?

Stupid develofers - they mock the players with subtlety just because we chose that difficulty option. :@

Re: The definitive Ninja Gaiden Σ/Σ2 thread!

Holy shit! This means that it's difficult even on the Ninja Dog difficulty? Looks like I'll be screwed if I continue in normal mode. I now see why I'm progressing so slowly. Each chapter is taking a shit load of time, not to mention, back tracking through areas is getting extremely confusing.

Re: The definitive Ninja Gaiden Σ/Σ2 thread!

I shit you not my friend, this game is very hard even in the lowest of the difficulties. I mean I've faced Lazaravic in Uncharted 2 in Crushing and beaten him, beaten Heinrich in hard mode in RTCW but this just takes the term difficulty to a whole new chapter! :@

But the way i see it, you have come all this way in Normal difficulty - take it further ahead in the same mode unless you feel the cringe to lower it. :)

I won't give up, that's for sure. Did you upgrade any weapon?

Re: The definitive Ninja Gaiden Σ/Σ2 thread!

^Upgraded everything except Doku's shitty katana. You get plenty of essence that you'll never run out of it anytime. You could come back and fight those piranha type fishes (it'd come later as you progress) and other lesser minions should you need more essence.

Re: The definitive Ninja Gaiden Σ/Σ2 thread!

I first played Ninja gaiden and then Ninja gaiden Black and later I tried Sigma but since most of the stages are similar so I quitted. I finished NG Black in all difficulty except MASTER where I cant even beat the first stage Boss i.e., Murai. I didn't find anything so hard, it was quite very easy even at higher difficulty level (except master)and all the Bosses are easier to kill. I had finished many EXTRA missions with MASTER Difficulty. :D. If i remember correctly I continued making hits to about 600 or 1000 in one stage. The best weapons are Dragon sword and Vigorian Flail.

U can see my user ID and my signature. This thread won't be completed without me. :D

Re: The definitive Ninja Gaiden Σ/Σ2 thread!

^Wow! Impressive! :)

Finally completed the game. The last boss Murai was way too easy. Except that his attacks are mighty devastating, if you can parry that it's fairly easy to take him down.

Have to lay my hands on NGS 2 now. :D

Natively at 1080i which is why it looked crappy on my display. :@

It was only in the last level I figured that if I switched the output of the PS# to 720p, the graphics looked sharp and crispy. Damn it.

Re: The definitive Ninja Gaiden Σ/Σ2 thread!

Is it really that difficult?? I played the demo on ps3 and absolutely loved it.I didn't find it that difficult and even the first boss battle, that buddha statue wasn't that tough...Does the game gets tougher after that or is the game much more tougher than the demo?? I really wanna get this game but am hesistant to get this fearing it might be too tough.............

Re: The definitive Ninja Gaiden Σ/Σ2 thread!

^NGS2 is toned down in difficulty compared to NGS 1 or at least that's how the majority puts it. And in fact that buddha statue is one of the easiest bosses, needless to say. :P

But hey if you did not like it, you can sell it of. You have a buyer already! :bleh:

Re: The definitive Ninja Gaiden Σ/Σ2 thread!

What Buddha statue? :S

Is that the new boss in NGS2?

Re: The definitive Ninja Gaiden Σ/Σ2 thread!

^yes. The 1st boss in NGS2.

I finished the game in Path of the Acolyte difficulty. And its very hard(at least for me). But its a good game though.

Re: The definitive Ninja Gaiden Σ/Σ2 thread!

Currently on Chapter 18 of NGS. I exhausted all my healing items on the boss fight with Doku's Spirit. Those ghost fishes are so f*cking annoying. Any tips before I proceed? I'm trying to farm some bats in a small cave to gain some points to purchase healing items later on. I currently have 10 'Elixir of Spiritual Life ' and 3 'Great Elixir of Spiritual Life'.
