Nokia to Adopt Windows Phone

How many companies Microsoft has partnered with have done any better? Can anyone give any examples?

I see this news as an advantage for microsoft rather then nokia.

now after this announcement nokia may see a further big drop in their phone sales till they release their W7 based phones. which hope fully might come this year.

Since they are alienating the symbian and QT framework. I see a possibility of lots of nokia fans going android / iphone way.

Another thing is windows 7 has lost it when it comes to smart phones against android / i-phone.

At this point where currently nokia stands, I feel a partnership with android would have saved the day for nokia and would bounced back with much needed funds + time to work on their own OS of the future. but now i fell they have lost it and are sold to microsoft.

Also I feel that nokia lacks a good visionary and good programmers to steer their hardware in the right direction.

and lastly personally i feel the nokia chiefs have taken this decision either confusingly or are influenced wrongly. and for the same i feel sorry for such a valued company.

unless ofcourse they bounce back.

I was expecting this after the letter by Nokia's CEO was published.

"I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve." - Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto (after Japan successfully attacked and destroyed Pearl Harbor)

This is an interesting news. I think Nokia will be the only affordable Windows phone since HTC is always too expensive. Do remember that some people just want to stick with Windows no matter what.

Windows Phone are much better then what you guys are thinking, The smoothest experience you can get only from Windows Phone, no matter how much improvement done by iPhone and Android.. And the upcoming releases are good from Microsoft :)

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

Also Nokia still working on MeeGo too and they are not going to stop the production of Symbian too. Lower end and mid end phone will run Symbian, Higher end will be Windows and MeeGo

@Vibu: I have used a Windows 6.5 phone and believe me, the interphase was really really bad. Even the simplest of tasks were so complicated to figure out.

HTC started out with WiMo 6.x phones and look where they are now.

WP7 is completely different from 6.5.Not everyone needs copy/paste.However they have to enable multi-tasking sooner rather than later on their phones. Nice move by nokia moving away from symbian poop. That's the worst piece of shit i ever used.

Trust me bro WP7 is totally different :) if possible give it a try, then you will love it man :)

It is rumoured that the current CEO of nokia was instrumental getting MS onboard because his previous employer was MS.
All conspiracy theories coming up on internet.

^+1. If he was so keen on saving the burning platform and position Nokia as a hardware only company, he could have definitely gone for Android as well. Choosing Windows clearly shows his agenda with the company.

I think I can safely say this (God, please prove me wrong): "Elop and his team fastracked* Nokia".

*Clue: The Fastrack ads :)

One good thing I see with this announcement is that now wannabe developers like me don't have to waste time learning Qt.

My sympathy goes for the Nokia employees who was working on Symbian, Qt, MeeGo...

Note: I have never used a Windows Phone, and was actively following Qt in particular. This news really killed my month. So, please don't bash me for posting like this. :)

I don't post much vociferously about these things but I mentioned in the other thread too about Nokia going for MS rather than Android, as they feel Android being too fragmented... plus they wanted to be a part of an ecosystem which was new, not much exposed and not too cluttered, so I applaud the decision.
here are the first concepts of a win phone from nokia !!! even the gals willl love these..

MS also needed them and you are right about your view that Nokia needed a solid and well capitalized partner for them to succeed, this is a partnership which will succeed as nokia has huge market !!! it is fantastic for us customers :)

Excellent job Nokia, even though the move has been highly delayed. Symbian needed to be given the boot for a while now. And microsoft needed a big manufacturer like Nokia to hold its own against Google and Apple. It seems that such might actually be possible now. Good for Nokia and Microsoft. And good products and decisions can only mean that it's good for us consumers too ;)

It is advantageous for both of them, more so for Nokia as they will not need to put in much effort about the OS but rather make the phones and as for them not having good developers, May I remind the N900, I and so many other people all over the world think it is the most robust phone ever made, software and hardware wise..
people are still holding on to it :)

Trust me, I have been a heavy user of WinMo 6.5 inmany forms, the last being the X1 and the HD2 !! they still carry a lot of steam, but people never understood its power and that was its problem.
LOLz at your uninstalling SDK ;)

Good that finally Nokia woke up and took a positive step. It was about time they got their act together. They had no specific direction and trying to do too many things with Meego, Maemo, Symbian 3 etc.

Symbian had its time but now its nowhere near mainstream smartphone OSs like Android, iOS and soon to be WP7. How many of us would have bought a N8 if it was running Android or Wp7? They make good phones, but it was the software that was a huge let down. I believe they should also not restrict themselves to WP7 alone and also release Android phones, like HTC and Samsung are doing.

Guys, still be cautious. Do not buy the first few Win mobile from Nokia. As usual they are famous to screw any new platform in the start :).

Be it N97, N900 S5 or in its starting S60.

Change is good, is what all I can say. Whether I'll go for this combination? Only time will tell.

Its rather good steps going the MS way---great finally nokia woke up to competition voice.

But i will seriously miss the symbian ;)esp the s60v3 &v5. Using them since past 5 yrs and got so attached & used to them. No matter what the dirtiest problems ever occurred, there was a definite solution for it. And really enjoyed doing RnD with symbian esp. firmware hacking and app crackings. It was fun and hope it will be more fun and nokia wont stop producing symbian OS phones too.
Only drawback of symbian is its a bit slow but it is fully customizable atleast for people like me who want their phones just to be in their own ways.:hap2:

Anyways kudos to nokia finally realizing the competition and coming forward with MS.
Hope they may come with real great phone in both symbi & Win editions. :cool2:

I have been a Nokia fan till today and all I can say is I am disappointed. This deal is only beneficial to Microsoft, reduces Nokia to just another supplier. We will able to customize everything in windows phone 7 and we wont, all that crap talk will not get Nokia anywhere. The deal would have made sense provided window phone 7 is a fully functional mobile OS but it is not. If this deal fails , the company which will be hurt the most will be Nokia.

Execution is a problem area for both companies. Nokia takes a long time to release any new product to the market. The first update for windows phone 7 which includes cut, copy and paste is yet to be released. Their success will depend how long they take to release their product and how quickly Microsoft implements multitasking feature.

On the hand, Google has been aggressive with its releases having as many as 3 per year. Apple has also been strategic with iOS releases. It introduced multitasking feature almost at the correct time when android started to gain momentum. Both have very stable and vibrant ecosystem.

I cannot help but think the Nokia CEO is Microsoft mole who was accepted CEO post to help windows phone 7. I could see him licking microsoft boots at the Nokia event.

but i think with nokia there may be an opportunity to develop custom ROMS .

the customs roms are discouraged by companies like SE,Motorola so with nokia on board we may have more options with tweaking whatever os is made available to us. :)

THe partnership with MS has greater significance.

We will be seeing Nokia devices of 2012 being developed exclusively for Windows 8, which is going to have native ARM support.

This is going to get interesting. Win7 Phone has immense potential already. Maybe by next year they'll be able to make something like XboX portable? Or get some of the XboX live titles to work on the nokia phones(dreaming)
