NVIDIA’s GeForce 8600 GTS, 8600 GT and 8500 GT graphics processors are here, so let's go over the exact specifications. The GeForce 8600 GTS features 32-stream processors clocked at 1.45 GHz along with 256MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 1.0 GHz. A 128-bit memory interface connects the memory to the GPU for 32GB/sec of memory bandwidth. The GeForce 8600 GT has the same 32-stream processors as the GTS; however, the unified shaders have a 1.18 GHz clock. Memory bandwidth is downgraded to 22.4 GB/sec thanks to slower core and memory clocks, at 540 MHz and 700 MHz, respectively. The GeForce 8500 GT has 16-stream processors clocked at 900 MHz and a 450 MHz core with DDR2 memory clocked at 400 MHz. The GeForce 8500 GT features the same 128-bit memory interface as the GeForce 8600-series. Memory bandwidth is downgraded to 12.8 GB/sec.

Here is chart to give you an easy explanation of the specs of these cards :D

8800GTS 320 MB - 500MHz | 96 stream processors | 1.6GHz mem | 320 bit | 280$

8600GTS 256 MB - 675MHz | 32 stream processors | 2GHz mem | 128 bit | 250$

which one would you pick ... expecting the 8600gts prices to drop quickly

thats still lower than my 7900gs??

so where do they stand up to my 7900??

It offers similar performance to the x1950 pro so I guess it's a bit better than the 7900gs

I wonder how much juice will dx10 need? The 8600 performed surprisingly lower compared to the dx9 cards in a review in anandtech, I think Nvidia messed up on their mid-range cards this time....still, let's see how dx10 performance turns out....

BFG Tech NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS - DX10 hits mid-range

Today we are seeing the announcement of the full line up including the 8600 series, 8500 and even some OEM-only 8400 and 8300 cards. Even though the majority of the features are the same on the G8x derivatives, there have been improvements in a couple of key areas.

The 8600 series of GPUs from NVIDIA take the outstanding feature set of the 8800-series of cards and brings them into the price points of the $150-250 graphics cards. Many users did find that the previous generations 7600-series of cards were the best bang-for-the-buck cards for DX9 and NVIDIA is hoping that consumers will think that about the 8600 cards for DX10 too!

The new 8600 GTS card features the fastest reference core clock speed of any G80 GPU at 675 MHz. It can accomplish this because it has many fewer stream processors on-board: 32 of them to be exact. Those shaders run at 1.45 GHz while the 256MB of GDDR3 memory runs at a quick 1.0 GHz for a total of 32 GB/s of memory bandwidth.

Our first sample that arrived was from BFG Technologies, one of the most respected in the add-in card business in the US. Like nearly all NVIDIA-based graphics cards, the BFG 8600 GTS OC is basically a reference design with a different fan plate screwed on for branding purposes. Every 8600 GTS that you see initially will be built the same way, though BFG does make a couple of performance changes...
