Hello folks, as dull it may sound but Im a noob at online shopping. Have a Debit card with me & registered with Ebay for a start.
Now I wanted to know whether its ok to give ones correct details during registeration?
Later while buying a page appears that asks for Credit card number, holders name & CVV(3 digit no)B]. Is it safe to to fill in all these details?

How to proceed after this?

Thanks, any more info. is welcome.

P.S: Btw, there's an option of paying on delivery, how to avail this?

Just make sure you are shopping in ebay.in itself. Do not shop from sites that are not well known and trusted. Ebay.in is very famous and we all shop from there often, it is perfectly safe to shop from there as long as you buy from reputed buyers who have good feedback.

And ya, you do need to provide correct details while registering and while buying, you do need to fill those details for your payment to go through. :P
Have you registered your Debit card with Verified by Visa/Mastercard Secure yet? I guess it is required before you can use the card for online transactions. If you haven't done so already, goto your bank's website to do so.

Thanks, no I haven't registered my debit card with Visa yet.
Edit: Done that now but surprisingly they ask for PIN no. which is confidential, should not be asked over Net.

^^
If they don't ask for PIN, any person who can get hold of your debit card can register for VBV/MS and use it online, if it is not registered already. It is to provide protection to online transactions, to make sure that the card owner himself is carrying out the transactions.

Yeah you are right but there should be some other way too. PIN code can get compromised through Net.

BTW how do you guys rate Indiatimes shopping?

Avoid Indiatimes shopping. Everything is pricey. Amongst the online shops, eBay has the best policies in place.

Which is more secure and easy way,Debit Card or NEFT ?
I'm planning to make an ebay account in future.....:ashamed:

If you have a Credit Card, prefer that. Second option is Debit Card. NEFT should really be avoided unless you know the dealer personally.

Well, lets say you walk in to your bank's branch and provide the PIN to an employee for the above verification.Would that make you feel more assured about your PIN? Isn't there a probability that he himself may compromise it, as there is virtually no way of finding who leaked it.

Online Transactions and Shopping are virtually one of the safest practices if you follow some basic rules and deal with genuine dealers.A lot of people are not aware of the measures of securities employed by banks and online merchants to make sure your transaction goes smoothly. The only reason online shopping is considered "unsafe" is because people fall for stupid flashy advertisements, which are actually designed much smarter than their Television counterparts.

Is the "watchshop.in" a reliable website for online purchasing as i am planning to purchase watch from this website

Is it recommended to change the PIN after using it online? If yes, I should go & change it right now.
Also, is the PIN code only of 4 digits?

Another query, how much do you think should ideally be kept in a debit card account considering safety?

Mate, you just used the pin on your own bank's website to register your card. Now you do not need to type in the PIN ever while you shop online, only the password is needed while you make a transaction.
Do not need to worry about anything, but if you're really paranoid, you can go and change the PIN, although it is not necessary. Just make sure you're running a good quality security suite in your PC to keep viruses and keyloggers at bay.

^ After reading your post, i thought that i should register my debit card with "Verified by Visa/Mastercard Secure".
So, i need some help regarding this verification process.
I have PNB ATM/debit card. During the registration, they ask for few things. So, please help me..
Card Number: (no problem here)
Expiry Date: (What should i enter, nothing is mentioned on the card)
For registering a Debit card , please enter ATM PIN
ATM PIN: (no probs here too)
For registering a Credit card , please enter the CVV,your date of birth and email address.
CVV: (now this is the main problem...there is no CVV no mentioned on my card.Checked my Dad's card, it has a CVV no. Also, my Mom's card too had a CVV no.)

This card was issued to me in Dec.2006 .So, its an old card.
Please help me what should i do ??

^
I remember very old debit cards didn't come with CVV number if I'm not wrong. But, expiry date should definitely be mentioned in the front of the card. Just check if it indeed is a Visa/Mastercard, make sure it has a Visa or Mastercard logo on the card.

yup, you are right. It didnt have any CVV no. Also, on the front side, it holds a "Maestro" logo, Card no. and Issue date.

On the back side, there is some EP code on the top(above black magnetic strip), MITR logo, INFINET logo and CIRRUS logo.

That's it.

Should i return this card to bank and ask them for a new card for online purchase??

One more question...though off-topic, do ebay.in(or their dealers) accepts payment via paypal??

Great that my post inspired someone! Though Im a noob myself but when I went through the process as suggested by members here, it was easy.

Just follow the steps for registering but be-ware that you are on the right site. I was reluctant on divulging the PIN no. but on seeing no other option, did that too!

Clear your doubts by posting queries, members are very helpful.

P.S: Get in touch with your bank either through customer care no.(on website) or visit the bank, CVV issue should be solved in no time. My card carried a 10 yrs exp. period.

yeah, but i can't register my card as it doen't hold any CVV no.

I think i had to plan a visit to bank to get the card replaced with a new one.

But for future references, i want to ask few more questions.

Suppose i purchase something from Ebay or similar site, and selected the preferred payment mode as my debit card.So what all things i'm supposed to enter. Like Card no., password, PIN no, etc.

Also, i would like to pay my MTNL Delhi bill online. So, this is what i've got when i visit online payment system.

# You can pay through Valid Visa/Master Card ( of any Bank )

# Visa Debit Card of SBI,ICICI Bank(ONLY ON ICICI PG),HDFC bank debit cards& NetSafe Cards,Axis Bank,DB,KYB,Corp Bank,IOB,Kotak(Net Cards) are also acceptable.

# OR You can pay through NETBANKING(The payment will be updated in two working days)

There are just 2 options on the page..

Pay Through Credit Card

Pay Through Net Banking

Now when i click pay through Credit Card, it took me too ICICI payment processing page.

And when clicked on pay through net banking, nothing happens. Just a blank page appears.

Anyone here had any experience in paying MTNL bills online ??

As there are many people who owns credit card/debit card but have never used for online transactions.

So, a basic 1-2-3 guide (or i would say a N00bs guide to Online shopping :P) would be better for user like me.. :P

Putting ATM PIN for "Verified by Visa/Mastercard Secure" ???
Is that secure ?
They will no my secret ATM PIN no.....:S

If you feel that they will know your ATM pin, then you can visit your nearby ATM and change the pin after successful registration.

Anyone got ebay account with SBI Debit card ?
There is no other info except the card no...:$
But,my card is only 6 months old.
